Ok some info on new recruit Colin Stevens.. As already noted, he's a local kid from Niskayuna, is good size at 6-2, 170 and turns 17 this summer. He played at Albany Academy 2 seasons ago and had numbers that were pretty forgettable - over 5 GAA and .893 save % - BUT this was on a truly terrible team that won only 6 of 32 games. That same season he played a few games with the Boston Little Bruins fall league team and had over 91% saves and then played for the Jr. Bruins summer AAA team (both coached by Tater) with pretty good results. He then had a breakout season in the Empire League this past year with a sub 2 GAA and close to 94% save, including a cup of coffee with the USNDP team where he didn't do too badly for a 16-year old.
This is obviously a very nice get, though should not be too surprising considering he's local and apparently a Union fan. Certainly the team doing well the last couple seasons had to have helped in his decision. Appears that he was getting interest from other ECAC and HE schools and is considered a good prospect in eastern hockey circles. I would point out though that the Empire is a Junior B league and things will get much tougher as he goes up the food chain. I would expect he will end up next year in EJHL or perhaps the USHL if he gets drafted there.
My biggest question is why the timing to come in '12. Milan graduates next year so will need a 3rd goalie in '11. Stevens should be senior year high school by that time so would think he could come earlier, though perhaps the thought process is that Colin will come closer to when Kinkaid is leaving, particularly if Keith were to leave early. I would think this means that a true 3rd stringer will be brought in to replace Corey, and if Kinkaid does stay all 4 years would either have 4 goalies or drop one.
As for Colin following Leaman if he goes somewhere else, I think there is fat chance of that. Colin is a local kid who wants to play at Union.. and besides all Head Coach Bennett would have to do is hire Tater as an assistant and to use the famous radio phrase, "the deal is sealed"
