I wish Sillery well. I've been following the Federal Hockey league, and the message boards, and "the hockey geeks" are really ripping the league apart. The Thousand Islands team is playing out of Alex Bay, NY and some people say the rink holds less than a thousand and that the village has less people than that in the winter.
I've played in the Rome and Binghamton(area) rinks, and they make Achilles look like an NHL rink. (They work great for rec leagues, but that is it.)

A pick of Waterloo in the second phase (15th round) of last week's USHL draft, Gostisbehere is a heady, puck-moving, quick stick, power play kind of d-man.

Gostisbehere is from Florida and below is the blurb on the Florida Jr. Panthers website (which sounds like it was partly culled from USHR or visa-versa):

5'11", 160 lb. South Kent School junior LD Shayne Gostisbehere has committed to Union College for either the fall of ‘11 or '12. Gostisbehere, a 4/20/93 birthdate from Margate, Florida (on the east coast, near Fort Lauderdale), played 33 games for South Kent last season and was the team's leading scoring d-man (and third-leading scorer overall) with a 6-27-33 line.
A pick of Waterloo in the second phase (15th round) of last week's USHL draft, Gostisbehere is a heady, puck-moving, quick stick, power play kind of d-man. He is planning to return to South Kent for his senior season. Shayne started playing hockey at the age of 6 as a Coyote at Incredible Ice. Later the organization transitioned into the Florida Jr. Panthers and he continued playing through U16.


Puck moving d-men are definitely a nice asset, but boy I'd like to see a little more meat on this kid by the time he shows up in Schenectady. Another season at South Kent plus a year of juniors might be a good plan.

Sounds like the coaches are very high on Jooris, Bodie, and Carr. I wouldn't expect any one of them to exactly replace Trabucco, Walters or Schreiber next season, but hopefully they can eventually fill those roles down the line. Also intrigued by Hatch, as sounds like he is a good sized kid with speed. I think this is potentially a very good class.

This also confirms that Fulton and Novak will be coming in 2011 (or later). Fulton should stick in the USHL, which would be great prep for him, and would not be surprised to see Novak land in a Junior league or a higher level prep school.

I wanted to mention that the Garnet Blades capped off the 2009-2010 year with a great day yesterday at the annual golf tournament held for the first time at the Mohawk Country Club. The field was oversubscribed and several foursomes could not be accommodated. Proceeds from the tournament, associated raffles and silent and live auction pushed money raised over the $100K mark for the second consecutive year. The event was sponsored by the Boyd family in memory of Pam Boyd, a founding member of the Blades and mother of two Union hockey alums.

The coaches will tell you that the financial support of the Blades has made a huge difference to the program particularly in the areas of recruiting budget, team facilities and to the coaching staff in areas where they were underfunded. Thanks to all GB members for making this a great season. I hope many of you will consider joining in 2010-2011.

This concludes another shameless plug. Forgive me? :o

Union College head coach Nate Leaman: The former Maine and Harvard assistant has had continuously competitive teams during his seven-year tenure at Union. Leaman has also served as an assistant on US World Junior and Under-18 Teams, working with current NTDP head coach Ron Rolston, with whom he also worked at Harvard.

Danton Cole, Red Gendron and Troy Ward are the other three.

Wow that sucks for us. I really like Nate, and he deserves whatever he gets, but I'll be selfish and say I hope he doesn't get offered the job, or just doesn't want it.

I hope Nate stays for a long time, but it's looking more and more like he will be moving on sooner rather than later.

My only partially educated guess is that he is concentrating on next season and will not be going anywhere this year but by the same token he is not going to finish his coaching career in Schenectady.

And do you think a new father would take a position with a team that doesn't have any home games?

The new proposed rules are all terrible, especially the ideas for icing. The last thing the ECAC needs is more opportunities for the referees to get things wrong.

Good news on Boileau, I was thinking he was a goner.

Any update on the US U-18 coaching search, and if Nate is still involved?
