Union Hockey 2010 Off Season Thread. Albany to A.C.

Re: Union Hockey 2010 Off Season Thread. Albany to A.C.

I'd be interested in hearing what folks here think -- did Fox make a mistake jumping from college too early? I know they threw a good chunk of money at him, but I see he was in the ECHL last season, and is now headed for Europe...

I would say probably. He got 300k to sign and had a decent 1st year in the AHL. After that, he has been a disappointment. I can't blame him for taking the cash and the opportunity.

That said, I'm not sure he would have panned out either way as a pro.

Definitely a tough call for a kid, with that kind of cash on the table.

I have to believe that he did in fact leave too early though I'm not sure how much more he would have developed in college. I thought he was an excellent college player but was a bit surprised that he was considered a top level pro prospect. I seem to recall that his was a two way contract, so I'd be very surprised if he got as much as $300K. If he made some decent money, good for him, but I would have loved to have had him at Union for another season or two. As a pro, it seems apparent that he is not headed in the right direction. I'm not sure TJ ever got a degree, which would be unfortunate. In any event, good luck to him and Schreibs.

Good for Keith, I know he also got some practice time with the Blues last year. He's definitely on the pro radar.

Also, good luck to Tyson Fulton this weekend. There's an outside chance he could get picked sometime in the last 2 rounds tomorrow. I hope some team with multiple late round picks gives him a look.

Are these NHL camps instructional, scouting opportunities, both?

From the Nashville Predators site (RPI d-man Jeff Foss is attending).

"...The purpose of the camp is to educate and direct players in their pro development and conditioning programs, and the week's events will be presided over by the Predators coaching staff. Strength and Conditioning Coach David Good will lead the scheduled training regimen, which includes a variety of dry-land activities and workouts, on-ice fundamentals work, off-ice testing and team-building activities. The players will also receive instruction on training principles such as sport-specific power and strength enhancement, flexibility and off-ice "

Loosely translated, plenty of sweating by the players. :p

I gather that this is all OK under NCAA guidelines or student athletes wouldn't be participating. Can't see how its anything other than a positive experience for the participants. Also being on the ice seems kind of appealing compared to what's going on outside of my air conditioned office.

Yes, college players pay their own way to the camps so as to keep in the good graces of the NCAA.

I just noticed that Heisenberg has started his 2011 list and came across a new name, at least I don't recall seeing it before.

Hey guys I stumbled on this and thought I'd pass it along. Apologies if you've seen it. While it was a recruiting miss for Nate, if you're like me, its informative to know where your coaches are beating the bushes.

Phillips Exeter 5'11", 180lb. junior Eric Neiley has committed to Dartmouth for the fall of '11. Neiley, a first-year student at Exeter, is a goal scorer who sees the ice very well, makes plays, and has deceptive speed. In 21 games so far this season, he has a 19-19-38 line. Colgate and Union were the other two schools interested in him. A native of Warminster, Pennsylvania, Neiley played for Team Comcast Midget AAA last season and was drafted in the sixth round of last June's OHL draft by Kingston. A 1/30/92 birthdate, Neiley is ranked #166 on Central Scouting's Mid-Term Rankings.

Good luck to Riley Nash who is leaving Cornell a year early to sign a pro contract with Carolina. Union won't be sorry to see him go, the Dutchmen had no answer for him for three seasons.
