Union Hockey 2010 Off Season Thread. Albany to A.C.

Re: Union Hockey 2010 Off Season Thread. Albany to A.C.

Just read this on the Times Union hockey blog...
Phantoms sign Valery-Trabucco to ATO
March 23, 2010 at 6:48 pm by Pete Dougherty, Staff writer
Tim McManus of the Glens Falls Post-Star reports that the Adirondack Phantoms have signed Union forward Mario Valery-Trabucco to an amatuer tryout contract.

I'm sure Mar will do extremely well in his new surroundings!

Heisenberg is showing a new recruit: Tyson Fulton, RW, Breck School, 5-11, 180, '91 DOB. Tyson was captain at Breck who won the Minnesota Class A championship for the second straight year. Led the team in scoring with a line of 31-35-58-93-26-(+18) which appears to have been ~3rd statewide in scoring. Minnesota Hockey Prospects web page describes him as:

a skilled player that is willing to play a sandpaper game. Protects the puck well, plays physical in the corners and plays a determined game. Has proven he can finish but is more accustomed to playmaking. Fulton is a highly underrated player that with the right development could play in the NHL someday. The biggest question mark is if he can translate his style of play against bigger opponents at the next level.

His older brother is a senior asst. captain at Minnesota-Duluth and Tyson was reportedly being recruited by UMD as well as UNO. Heisenberg has him listed as either a '10 or '11 recruit, though a quote I read said he may be leaning towards doing a year of juniors first. This looks like another good recruit with a style of play that could fit really nicely with U's. Looks like Ben Barr's Minny connections are paying dividends..

Good luck to Mario as he begins his quest for a professional career. Thanks to ADK for the background on Fulton. It would seem to make sense that a season of junior hockey would be in order particularly in view of the incoming 2010 recruits. From the sounds of it he will be a good addition especially if he gets another year to develop and mature physically. A Minnesota pipeline would be a good thing. ;)

I wish we were playing this weekend, but c'est la vie. :(

This is killing me, not seeing the boys play. I keep reading the "so, youre team got screwed" threads, but don't want to cry sour grapes. Yes, there are a few teams with lesser stats, ratings, etc in the dance, but they got there fair and square...somehow. U is a class program and complaining takes away from it.

I will, however, complain that I can't see many of the games since ESPN-U is not offered in my neck of the woods. Any ideas as to how I can still watch?

The criteria for postseason are pretty well known, even if as in my case, not fully understood. :o Union dropped the ball, or should I say puck, buy not winning some OOC games that they probably could have, and performing less than spectacularly in some in conference games. That being said, the glass is way more than half full and I'm reasonably optimistic about next season and still basking in the glow of the best D-1 season in program history.

BTW, has anyone got any info on next season's OOC schedule?

ESPN360.com is showing the games, but you also need to have cable service from a cable company that "partners" with them. I looked into it a little bit, but I'm not eligible. There is a thread here that talks about it:

Another reason not to like E$PN. :(

Nothing official, but heard about a possible Alaska trip early in the year. A trip to Minnesota for the holiday tournament. Also heard about the Lake Placid gig with RPI, SLU and Clarkson.

ECAC Coach of the Year Nate Leaman has been nominated for the Spencer Penrose Award and has also been named by INCH as Coach of the Year. I messed up the links but they can be found on the ECAC website and in Ken Schott's blog.

Saw Trabucco play maybe a total of 2 shifts against the River Rats Saturday. He seemed to do fine and hopefully they will give him more of a chance. Funny seeing him without a face mask.

He played long enough to pick up a penalty. ;)

INCH may be a little too much "What have you done for me lately" for my taste, but they got this one right. Nate Leaman named coach of the year by INCH.

I especially like the last paragraph:

A once-dormant Messa Rink is now the place to be on campus Friday and Saturday nights, and the change in attitude around the program is such that winning is now an expectation. This isn’t a one-and-done run for Union.

I really hope that Messa can become a great, loud place to play and leads to the Capital District being a feared road trip.

Re: Union Hockey 2010 Off Season Thread. Albany to A.C.

There has been discussion on the RPI thread that Seth Appert has received another contract extension taking him through 6 more seasons. I'm not saying he is not deserving but if he warrants that kind of extension, what about Nate Leaman? I'm getting an uneasy feeling about this. :(
