Union College: 2019-2020

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

After about 5 minutes last night, I didn’t think it was possible. I was wrong. I was impressed how they worked and clawed back into the game...only to have it stolen away from them by Schafer and the refs.

Again, horrible officiating.

While you can complain about the officials if you like, how exactly did Schafer steal the game?

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

I was shocked when the goal was overturned however on replay there is goaltender interference. There's a man in the crease prior to the play, he makes contact with Galajda's skate blade and impedes him so he can't reset after the initial move. Surprised me too, but it was the right call. Sometimes those fail the initial eye test, which is why we have replay.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Here's a comment about the review:

If you're still interested, go to around 6:20 to go and you can see Rinaldi entering the crease. It looks like his left leg hits Galajda's right and Galajda starts to go down. All this well before the shot.

Ref Allen immediately goes to scorers table. One of the linesmen comes over as well. Then after the replay of the goal, you see the other ref, Lynch, and a linesman at center ice. The linesman who was with Allen comes over and says something to them. Lynch skates over to Allen. Then one ref skates to go off and the other to CU's bench.

So it certainly looks like Allen knew right away that it had to be reviewed.

It's a tough break for Union who fought back valiantly. For Cornell it's a scary reminder to put the game away when you can or you can be bitten.

I only saw the normal camera angles from the ESPN+ broadcast this morning on Ken Schott's twitter feed, and not the overhead view, but it didn't appear that Galajda or anyone else on the ice for Cornell protested the goal--normally not the case when a goaltender feels like he has been impeded. I am not an expert on goalie interference rules but the apparent non-reaction of Cornell players reveals, at least to me, the ultimate effect of the contact.

I'm listening to Ben Syer, the Cornell assistant coach, on tonight's pregame, and he just said he was immediately ready to protest and ask for a review. It's actually still not clear to me whether the review was triggered by Cornell or the officials just called it themselves. I've seen four different sources disagree on it today. In any case, having seen the review in painful slo mo now it did show Galajda was impeded from sliding over, and that's textbook GI. But in real time I saw nothing. Our eyes are imperfect.

Union has now played us tough twice. The Cornell broadcast team commented last night that whoever draws the Dutchmen in the playoffs will not be pleased. Good luck against everybody except us. :)

That's fair, but my perspective is that the purpose of replay is not to erase goals when the supposed infraction does not even generate a protest from the players who would have been impeded. I am not a Union or Cornell fan, so I don't have a dog in the fight, but I can see why Union fans are aggrieved; two trips in a row to Ithaca where borderline calls have made a big difference in the games.

It was also mentioned on tonight's ESPN+ broadcast that the officials had conducted the review on their own initiative.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Mathematically it's just about impossible for us to gain home ice for the first round. Yale and Dartmouth would have to lose all their remaining contests and we would have to win all of ours. Since January 1 we are 2-7-2 with a one point win over St. Lawrence and a one point win over Dartmouth. Against ranked teams have a tie against Providence and a tie against Cornell. The next two should be the last two at Achilles this year. Injuries and transfers killed whatever offensive hopes we had this year. We are currently 55 in the PP and 56 in scoring. We are currently 42 in defense and the 42 Penalty Kill. I think we got better as the year progressed but so did everyone else. Here is hoping that with the experienced gained, next year gets us out of the league basement area. I am not sure it will.

One more weekend to go !!!!! Dartmouth is very difficult to beat at home. If we get RPI for the first round we will not have to travel very far. The first two periods against Princeton were painful to watch. Princeton was getting to the loose puck first every time !!!

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

So the seasons over, how did we do:
We ended 7-23-4. I had predicted 5 wins ... we did a little better.

We were
Team Offense - Union 56/60 NCAA DI Men's hockey teams with a 1.82/3.12 GPG/GAPG
Team Defense - Union 45/60
Power Play - 56/60
Penalty Kill - 54/60
Penalty Minutes - 38/60
Darion Hanson (6-22) 53/75 GAA 2.90 SV% .905

Other Team Offense
St Lawrence was 58/60
Brown was 59/60
Colgate was 51/60
Princeton was 53/60
Yale was 44/60

At the other end on team offense Harvard and Cornell tied:
Harvard 3.59 5/60
Cornell 3.59 5/60

The ECAC as a league (interconference) was
DI Independent .653
NCHC .632
Big Ten .607
HE .590
ECAC .409
WCHA .375
Atlantic .269

ECAC vs Atlantic was .556
ECAC vs HE .343

ECAC overall was not much better than Atlantic Hockey.

On Penalty Minutes we (Union) were 38/60 with 3 ECAC teams doing worse and 8 ECAC teams doing better.

We have no sustainable competitive advantage in attracting the best hockey candidates. We need a completely supportive ecosystem to be a Lake Placid "contender" each year. That means (1) Schenectady Fans, (2) Students, (3) Faculty (4) Administration (5) Board of directors, (6) Parents, (7) Press, (8) Admissions and Aid, (9) Facilities and (10) Boosters have to be aligned with outstanding coaches. The ecosystem must be proactive in supporting the team. (Our current president's priority is painting his fingernails pink).

Going forward our "steady state", if we have an average team, is, IMO, a lower 1/2 of the ECAC finish each year.

No excuses ....

Football did well this year ....

On to next year .... what do our recruits look like?

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

I doubt next year is much better than this year was, and it may be worse. With only three seniors on the team, it's unlikely next year's roster changes in a big way unless a bunch of guys leave early. If Hanson leaves early, they're especially in world of trouble. He was the best guy on the ice for them most of the year but he was often let down by the talent in front of him. I wouldn't want Pipes, Graziano or Nieto as my starter.

I don't get the sense there's a ton of goal scorers in the immediate pipeline, and finding the back of the net was a major deficiency with this year's team. Recruiting is way down from 5 years ago and even further down from 10 years ago.

I wish I get proven wrong but I think years like this will be the new normal for awhile.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Nice season re-cap, Dutchman. It's not been good the last few years. You've hit the nail on the head before, how do you attract talent to Union? I think Union itself is a pretty easy sell, and a new arena would certainly help that. But imo Schenectady is a tough sell, although better than it has been in the past. The northeast is just full of outstanding places to play, not sure U is that high on that list. I agree with your sentiment that it will take all aspects of the community to get back to yearly competitiveness. Let's hope we move forward well.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

The scoring will improve next year with the addition of Jack Adams and a full year of Parker Foo. Our talented freshmen class will be better next year as well. Also, we have at least two recruits who look like future scoring threats. The future is bright and enjoy the playoffs next weekend. Go U!

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

In our last 10, we were 1-7-2 and Yale was 4-4-2
Our combined scoring against Yale was 0-7 as we lost 0-2 and 0-5
I say we put up a good fight but go down in 2

Certainly, the fight was there last night. Good overall effort, even though it looked like Yale controlled most of the game. Hanson was excellent, with the help of the iron a couple of times.

I don’t know if we’ll win tonight, but I hope we just leave it all out there. There’s still nothing to lose.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Looks like we ran out of gas in Period 3. Impressed with our shot-blocking. We came to win. We will need more speed and more snippers next year.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Well:
That is all she wrote. We put up a good fight I guess. In the two overtime periods, we got off a total of two shots. Finished 55th in the pairwise. On to next year. It looks like maybe only two ECAC teams make it to the big dance.
