Union College: 2018-2019

Senior Kupsky gets initial nod in net for Union
Goalie eventually will split time with sophomore Darion Hanson, but Kupsky scheduled to start when Dutchmen open on Oct. 6

GLENVILLE -- Messa Rink isn't available this week while workers install the new center-ice video board, so the Union men's hockey team has been practicing at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility.

They stepped off the bus in full gear Wednesday afternoon, and since 6-foot-4 senior goalie Jake Kupsky had his mask perched on top of his head, he had to duck to get through the door.

And he'll be standing tall in front of the Union goal when the Dutchmen's 2018-19 season kicks off next Saturday at Messa against Army.
He won't be in net every night, with promising sophomore Darion Hanson breathing down his neck on the heels of a nice 10-4-0 freshman season. But the logical move for now will be to ask Kupsky, an all-ECAC Hockey third-teamer, to regain the momentum he built while going undefeated in the final seven games of the 2017-18 regular season before Union was swept by Princeton in the ECACH quarterfinals.

Here is hoping Kupsky keeps improving.

For those who have subscribed to the old video system, you can still get the game archives from last year at http://www.unionathletics.tv/archives.html, if you have an account. It was nice to have access to the archives in case you missed a game. RPI archives games as well. I am not sure if ESPN will archive games.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Just popping in to advertise the ECAC Pick the Standings contest again. It's a super simple game that takes like 1 minute of thought to play. Entrance is allowed through the first ECAC matches at the end of the month, but feel free to make a guess now and revise later. Thanks!

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Lots of playing time for the freshmen and sophomores. Haywood (F), Brierly (SO), Estes (SO), Hatwood (F), Breault (F), Ryan (F), Morton (F), and Harrison (SO) all saw lots of playing tie. Jake looked great and except for him, I thought our "D" was a little disappointing, Liam Morgan looked good, Rinaldi seemed to be the fastest skater on the ice along with Kolias. Army had a lot of folks returning, however, this year they are in desperate need for a staring goalie. We need to do better. Jake gets the MVP.

Nebraska-Omaha
Head coach: Mike Gabinet
2017-18 record: 17-17-2 overall, 10-13-1 NCHC (5th)

Changes: Forwards David Pope, Tyler Vesel, and Jake Randolph (7-19-26) — all graduated seniors — combined for 99 points last season. That'll give last year's potent offense a new look, especially on the power play, where Pope's role will be hard to fill. Pope scored 12 goals on the man-advantage last season, second-most in the NCAA behind Northeastern's Dylan Sikura.

Strength: Head coach Mike Gabinet has stressed the importance of special teams play, and his offense last year was spurred by the fifth-best power play in the NCAA. Special teams should remain a strength thanks to an effective system that the Omaha players have bought into.

Weakness: Omaha struggled with consistency last season — tending to lose Saturday night games after wins on Friday. And if the Mavericks lost on Friday night, they didn't win a single game on Saturday night. Simply, in his second season, Gabinet will be looking for consistency throughout each weekend.

2018-19 Outlook: Gabinet now enters his second season at the helm in Omaha. No longer carrying the mantle of the youngest coach in college hockey (Denver's Carle gets that tag), he'll look to lead a team that has question marks in many areas. Expect some growing pains, especially early in the season with a trip to Union and a home series against Notre Dame.

“I think a little bit is you don’t know until you know, and sometimes you only get that through experience,” Gabinet said at last week's NCHC Media Day. “It’s been nice to go through the full season now — coaching against other teams, going into other buildings, the recruiting aspect of things and all the different things that come from being a head coach. ... I think that’s great for me to be able to get that experience now.”

UNO players to watch, NCHC at a glance
https://www.omaha.com/uno/hockey/un...cle_f7d57ccc-5711-5798-b591-92561663ff35.html

6. UNO 17-17-2, 10-13-1
With the graduation of last season’s senior class, the final remnants of UNO’s 2015 Frozen Four team are gone. But the Mavericks bring back 10 seniors this year, including three double-digit goal scorers and four players who finished with 20 or more points. UNO could take a step forward in its second year under coach Mike Gabinet, but it will need to be better defensively. The Mavs gave up a national-worst 3.72 goals per game last season, yet they came within a win of home ice in the playoffs.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

As many have predicted, our offense has great depth and lots of talent. While its way too early, after 3 we are averaging 4 goals a game. Also, as predicted, how far we go will depend on our defense and depends on how far Jake can take us. That is still an unknown.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Jake's numbers through three are 2.60 and .902.
The Huskies return one of the best goal tenders in the nation (1.92 and .931) and everyone from a very solid defense unit.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Our first ranked opponent. Huskies ranked 12. Last time we played them was 2007. Never beat them at Matthews. Great to have Rinaldi back. Great to have the Big Swede scoring. HE Refs no worse than our own.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Sounds like Hanson was fantastic !!!! Senior leadership is coming alive. Lots of firepower and depth on offense. RPI coming up. You can throw out the records. 4 ECAC points on the line.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Traditionally the non-ivy's in the ECAC start off each season with a strong NC showing. St. Lawrence and Clarkson have traditionally been particularly strong. However, the past few years have been an exception. This year the ECAC has gotten off to strong start against HE. Q-Pac, Union and Colgate are 7-0. Is HE that bad? Is the ECAC that good? Will the trend continue? Too early to tell. Its a long season.

I saw both games. Biggest save Hanson made was in the first period of game one. NU led 2-0 at the time. If NU had gone up 3-0, it might have changes the whole weekend. Not knocking your team, they regrouped from that point and took control from there. Kolias and Vidmar were very impressive.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

In 24 hours, the first matches of the conference schedule will be over and you will no longer be able to enter the ECAC Pick the Standings contest (or change your picks if you already entered). It takes very little time to enter, so head on over to the thread and make your pick!
