Re: Union College: 2017-2018

A physical game that could have gone either way. Both teams will have bruises this morning.
Both goalies made some stellar saves. A couple of lapses in concentration for Hanson.
The one word that came to my mind after the game was clumsy. I can't shake the feeling that with less clumsiness we would be a much better team (that PP goal is a textbook back door pass, a beauty). Looks like all the players are trying, maybe trying too hard? The creativity we had earlier in the season seems to have been reigned in. Maybe it's a good things to be more settled...
Overall a decent effort against a good Yale team. Things didn't go off the rails when they could have, and we have 2 more points in our basket!

On to Brown who defeated RPI with 3 seconds left on the game (after trailing for 48 minutes...)!! Another 2 points would be nice!
Go Union!!!!

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

Brown scores about half their total points in period 3. They tied Maine and New Hampshire this month. They are playing good defence.
We blocked 17 shots against Yale - playoff hockey. Need to do the same today. Defense.

Got the impression that the refs decided that the Interference penalty was not part of the rule book last night..
and after the 2nd period head slaps and slashing near the crease were removed too..
The refs almost lost control of the game and that would have been a shame.. it was entertaining hockey (cept for the announcers on ivy league tv)

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

We don't want this to be a 1 goal game with 5 minutes to go. Brown always puts it into another gear in the last 5 minutes. They have lines that can score. Jump on them earlier. Build a lead. Take it to them in periods 1 and 2. Take away time and space. Block shots. We blocked 17 vs 4 for Yale.

We have 8 league matchups in February. We need to win 4 to get that first round bye.
4 Wins.

I think that is a reasonable achievement - but believe we an get 6 or 7 in those games..
better higher up in that top four ...

How many do you think we can take if he stops jerking the goalies in and out and goes with the hot hand?
or if #18 comes back ready to go?

I've often wondered about the impact of switching goaltenders every 1-2 games. Hanson's performance as a freshman has been very impressive and will continue to grow with consistent play and experience. Hopefully 18 will be ready to go against Cornell and Colgate.

Many times it doesn't matter that much as the two guys play a similar way and the D players are the same 6 guys
In this case you have night and day
- Kupsky loves to wander and play the puck and handles the stick well
- Hanson stays pretty close to the blue and sets the puck for the defensemen
and hasn't shown the passing skills - although he tries sometimes.

Now both the goalie and the d-man - must anticipate,
what is the padded guy going to do and what the D-man would prefer he do, and when it changes every other game
(along with who might be playing defense) - confusion and the dreaded turnover are bound to show up a few times a game.

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

Watched the Cornell/Harvard game last night.
Cornell has a very impressive team. Their defense is just what we don't like: they press high and hard. Their forecheck is always going. They don't let you get pucks to the net (lots of blocked shots) and when you try to, they force you shoot from far away. They are very good at clustering around the puck carrier and are able to apply lots of pressure around the puck area. Makes for very few openings and little time to get anything going. Their goalie made some incredible saves... They blanked their opponents in their last 3 games and have allowed only 7 goals in their last 9 games (1 in the past 4!!!).
On top of that they have individual players who can make a difference at any time in the offensive zone!

This is going to be one of the biggest tests this season for Union. The more experienced guys are going to have to step up and show the way.
Stay calm, make short passes that connect, keep it simple.

Love to beat RPI no matter what the stakes. nice to see Brierly and Hynes play. Brierly looked Decent, hopefully he can fill in (along with Newhouse) for light and brassard next year, would be a decent defense. Shouldn't lose too much on d. Couple with the fact we only lose scarfo on O we should be good next year. love Hynes, guy hustles more then anyone. Lots of grit. Not the most talented guy, we certainly have better forwards but super glad to see him play and get rewarded. Between Harvard losing to Colgate and Cornell and Colgate losing to Dartmouth we look pretty good for top 4, especially if we can atleast split with Colgate from here out. Pleasantly surprised with this team, I think they are ahead of schedule, and regardless of where we finish this year, they should be a great team next year

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

OK, RPI vs Union what can I say. We almost blew a 4 point lead. Did we expect RPI to give up? Kudos to Hynes
Looking forward, we need 8 points. 28 points should get us top 4 for a bye. Many ways to get there.
- 4 wins
or
- 8 ties
or
- 2 points each weekend
Hanson is 10-3, 2.18 and .911 with 1 shutout.
Playoff hockey next weekend. Defense. Block shots !!!

There isn't an easy game in the bunch - so it is going to show EXACTLY what kind of team they are and How much they really want it.
It needs to be EVERYBODY ALL IN with no lapses (and boy do we know lapses).
We could also use just a Bit more creativity on the Power play.. GO U

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

What if?
What if any of the 12 ECAC teams went undefeated in league play the rest of the way. How many could hypothetically reach 28 league points?

Q = 28
Darmouth = 29
Colgate = 31
Harvard = 31
Union = 36
Clarkson = 40
Cornell = 41

This thing is a long way from being over. Who gets that the first-week bye is a long way from being decided. Starting next weekend it's going to be a wild ride. Next weekend our freshmen get a taste of Lynah.
