Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Curious if the posters here have any thoughts on the dirty Foo hit last night that ended the season of one of our top defensemen. It was a brutal high hit several seconds after our player had released the puck. Nothing was called, even though a 5-minute major + Game DQ was deserved. Is this the type of thing Foo does often?

Troll alert !!!

The facts are that Brendan Smith was coming back from an injury .... probably too early.
"On a bad note, Cornell lost defenseman Brendan Smith for the rest of the season with an injury. Smith had just returned to the lineup after missing a couple of weeks.

A good coach never puts an injured player in the lineup until they are certain they are 100% ready to go. Good coaches are demanding but they always put the player's health first.

In 24 games this year the sophomore scored 1 goal with 2 assists so this is a "top" defensemen?

Every game the headhunters are out for Foo and Vec. I am amazed either are still standing.

We will see Cornell again, I hope.

That's a funny joke :)

Each element of your post is absurd.

1. I do post on ELynah. My post would be nonsensical there because that forum has no Union fans.
2. Smith's injury last Saturday (lower body) is completely unrelated to his prior injury (shoulder). It is embarrassing for you to insinuate based on virtually zero information that our coach is endangering our players.
3. Smith is our shutdown defenseman who plays against the other teams' top lines. He has a +8 +/- despite playing against other teams' top scorers all season long and missing time due to/play through injury.

3.75 star prospect Blake Hayward (@BCHLExpress) commits to Union. Strong, powerful skater with size, sense, physicality and puck control.

Let us know when Fat Mike starts whining about it. Usually that comes when the refs don't give him his way.

I can't believe I'm actually defending partisan reffing towards Union...

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

What are the odds Vecchione wins the Hobey? I haven't seen much out there nationally. You'd have to think he's definitely in the running, but with Foo having such a stellar year as well, and being a small school i could see the voting going elsewhere.

I think the odds are pretty good. Gostisbehere was a trailblazer and you've won a national title. Don't feel like being a small school will work against him. He's a stud and the hockey world knows it.

While the "small" school issue might not hurt Vecchione's chances, I truly believe his teammate and linemate, Foo will hurt his chances in splitting votes. I myself believe that Foo has more upside as possibly a top six at the next level while Vecchione is more suited for bottom 6 at the next level. Having said that and taking nothing away, Vecchione is more deserving Hobey winner and if he doesn't win it, he will get more votes than Foo.

The award is not for the projected next level of the player .. that point is moot.
Each of them benefited by playing together - That is how it usually works when you
look at the point totals... as you point out Foo is a special player but a bit wild at times
This year the points, the timing of the points (game winners for example), the effort and the leadership points to only
1 player - Mike...

Understood! But as a Hobey Baker winner would it look better if the player made more of a impact at the next level thus validating the selection compared someone not winning and excelling at the next level? Again, no question Vecchione is the more deserving candidate...that much is clear.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Remember These?
I knew we would be improved over last year but how much? I had us picked for 6th with a stretch goal of making it to the first-week bye. Never did I dream about a Cleary Cup (or half a cup). Now the possibility of making it to Lake Placid and a legit Hobby Baker candidate!!! We barely beat Colgate and Princeton in our own barn. Nothing is certain in this league. First things first. We need to make it to Lake Placid.

ECAC Preseason Coaches Poll

ECAC Preseason Media Poll

Their statement - doesn't mention looking good or even impact at the next level --
-- NCAA player who best "exhibits strength of character both on and off the ice" and "contributes to the integrity of the team and displays outstanding skills in all phases of the game"

speed - check, dedication - check, Leadership - check, shot - check, moves - check, community active - check
Sounds pretty solid ... But I know what you are saying - same discussion they have every year in College Football
with that pesky heisman trophy .. best player vs best stats.. and they get it wrong most of the time..

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

They were also wrong with Princeton - They have evolved into a very tough team whether home or away..

They never really say who votes on the final tally.. Fans is only 1% on round 1 and 2 but other than saying there is a committee
and a chair - they don't expand into who votes, how many there are, teir qualifications etc.. I guess you can only hope that unlike college football
who uses sportswriters (who may never actually see the candidates play) they actually know something ..

Unfortunately for me they were very wrong about Yale as well, Princeton could easily make it tp Placid if the "good" Princeton team continues to show up. Very streaky team.
