Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

This was the heading in November when we last faced Clarkson

Clarkson's rugged style too much for Union hockey

Times Union 2016-11-13

http://www.timesunion.com/sports/ar...-style-too-much-for-Union-hockey-10610930.php

In the opening minutes of the game, the sounds of the board-rattling body checks being dished out by Clarkson skaters made it clear the Golden Knights were bringing a physical brand of hockey to the Union College Dutchmen. If that weren't enough, Kelly Summers' perfectly timed body check on Union's 6-foot-6, 228-pound center Eli Lichtenwald in the neutral zone, a clean hit that sent Lichtenwald to the ice, sent a clear message to the Dutchmen that they would have to earn every inch of ice against the Golden Knights. Union was never able to match Clarkson's physical brand of play, nor could it keep up with the Golden Knights' offense that scored a pair of goals early in the first period and knocked off Union 3-1, handing the Dutchmen their first ECAC hockey loss of the season Saturday at Messa Rink.

"When we are on the edge and playing physical, that is when we play our best," Jones said. "It is a double-edged sword to continue to put them on the power play with those lethal players that they have. We wanted to hit them, we wanted to make sure we were above them and didn't want to give them any time and space."

We got our asses kicked, plain and simple. I hope it does not happen again.

Nice to see so many guys on the scoresheet.
SLU up next....
Go U !

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Huge !!!

Been waiting all year for DUFOUR to step up and show the potential he showed as a freshman. He stepped up big time with two goals and some solid D. All three of our big sophomore forwards scored tonight. Great job Dutchmen !!!!

Post game interview Bennett complimented the Knights for having a "very good" hockey team. No such compliment from Casey "(Union) got a couple breaks early on, and that was the main separation, and we made some bad plays.”

Watertown Daily Times video including the fight at the end. Glad DUFOUR stood up for himself. The rest of the team (Union) showed great restraint and discipline.

We now have three lines contributing ... can we make it four?

What a lame highlight reel. Was hoping to see the Dufour goals. We get to see the little mites during intermission, another minute of nothing before the game even started, and one Clarkson goal.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

After all the buildup of what a disciplined, physical test the Knights would be, it was the same old Clarkson of the last 5-6 years last night - lax defense, occasional big hit/cheap shot and running the goalie, gooning it up after the whistle after they got behind.. I thought Jones was turning things around and that Clarkson would be challenging for a top 4 finish but looks like they have a ways to go yet. Surprising how it was a completely different game from the one in Schenectady, which was physical but very defensive. Looked like Clarkson thought they could outskate Union at the start of the game and never got the genie back in the bottle.

I do give the boys a lot of credit for playing physical themselves and mostly giving back as good as they got. The whole team looked dialed in throughout the game, which was a good sign. Think its becoming clear that having Dufour & ZachE in the lineup adds size, physicality & speed compared to Pontarelli (lack of size) & Eli (lack of speed). They aren't exactly Ikky and Cruice, but they are pretty close and this team is going to need that against teams that can skate & play physical - like will happen again tomorrow night. The Scarfo line has become a load to handle with their combo of size & speed and was very good last night. The 2nd line is also becoming a consistent force. Things seem to be balancing between d-men that are undersized, quick, good puckhandlers and forwards that are generally bigger but also fast & skilled.

I sure hope that the refs from last night don't follow the team to Canton - haven't seen a North Country Homer Game called like that in quite a while. Union players off the puck were getting blasted all night without a call, but every time a Union player brushed up against a Knight without the puck it was an interference penalty. SLU will be a very big game and the team is going to need another big effort. I'm hoping it will be like the game in Schenectady, which was fantastic to watch.

Calling that a highlight reel is being quite generous.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Never easy to get a sweep in the North Country....
SLU has a very good team
Should be nice to be back home but Cornell will be another tough game.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Sweetman should be suspended for his high hit/charge on Vidmar, hope he's ok as he was the first one I saw leave into the tunnel with the medical staff around him, he was your best forward IMO tonight, what a force with the puck coming out of the corner. Really liked Walker too for U.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Sweetman's hit was clean.

The bigger issue is that Sak gets run every game, no one does anything about it, so he gets run again (multiple times).

That was a clean, hard, hard hit. Sweetman is one of, if not the best defensive, d-men in the league. All year long he has been handing out good, hard, clean hip checks in particular. It has been a pleasure watching him for four years.

What a great college hockey game tonight. Union is scary how well they can control the play, cycle down low and keep the puck in the attacking zone for extended periods of time. We don't have the snipers you have.......but we have a lot of grit and I'm sure it was a big lift to get Bayreuther back. Tonight was his first game since hand surgery and he didn't even practice this week. Just went out there and played. He was on the ice and largely responsible for giving up the second and third goals but once he gets his legs back and his hand heals more he'll be his old self again. He creates so many offensive chances for us as shown by the goal he scored. Our offense is so much stronger when he is on the ice.

A really fun game to watch and a tie would have been a fitting ending as both teams played really well.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

It was a good game, with a lot more physical play than we're used to. A tie would have been a good result, but SLU did not steal the game from us, it was a well deserved result.
As for Sak getting run over, if he has a problem with it, he needs to fight for himself. Defense can only do so much. He did have a good game I thought overall, even if I'm sure he'd like at least of the goals back.

Might be difficult for Sak to punish forwards in the corners and play stout in front of himself when he's supposed to be in net.

While defense can only do so much, defense can do more than watch opponents drive the net.

Opponents are clearly targeting Sak, and it's only a matter of time until he's hurt.

Sweetman's hit was not clean - He jumped to hit a man above the shoulders -- no it wasn't an elbow but it also wasn't clean...
There were 2 penalties last game for contact with the head that were to the shoulder - the refs really need to learn where the head is...

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

We still the hardest "row to hoe" for all of the ranked ECAC teams. St. Lawrence has the easiest.

Union
8 ECAC games remaining
4 away
4 ranked teams USCHO

St. Lawrence
6 ECAC games remaining
4 away
2 ranked teams USCHO

Harvard
7 ECAC games remaining
2 away
2 ranked teams USCHO

Cornell
9 ECAC games remaining
4 away
3 ranked teams USCHO

Yes he is being targetted and since it is very obvious and I might add illegal wouldn't it be the job of the refs
to make it stop - The defense would be hard pressed (at 155-160 pounds and skating backwards) to do anything about a 180-190 pound
man going full speed forward making a beeline for the goalie.. The d-man was there - he was driven right through Sak..
Lucky they both weren't hurt.. It is the forwards job to avoid the goalie ..

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Dutchman - you worry far too much about away games and rankings.. This team CAN beat anybody on any ice if they
play Their game and not take the pedal off the floor like they did last night.. Can't sit back and protect a 2 goal lead..
you didn't get the lead that way and if you try that - you won't have it long...

That and shuffling 4 lines to replace one injured man - didn't get that move at all.. The Meier line was solid and in sync
so lets move one of them to vech line and Walker to their line - now you have 3 lines messed up and a 4th a man short..
Go figure - coaches get paid to do things like that....

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

This team is definitely capable of beating anyone but they are also capable of losing to anyone if they don't bring their A game for 60 minutes.
Still very hopeful that this team is the real deal Feb results should tell part of the story. Crunch time begins.....let's wrap up the bye and home ice for playoffs.
