UNH Women's Hockey 2014 - 2015 Looking FORWARD to the game~

Re: UNH Women's Hockey 2014 - 2015 Looking FORWARD to the game~

And I thought Massachusetts was a pathetic state. New Hampshire is brutal. What a shame a man's career and reputation are ruined by one "special" player.

While it is certainly a shame that a man's career and reputation are in ruins, we all are accountable for our own actions. Regardless of how she may have inappropriated incited, the fact remains that swearing at and making physical contact with a player/student/employee are completely unacceptable behaviours in this day and age. He did make that choice. No one else made him do it.

While it may be debatable if the punishment was appropriate (assuming it was a first offence), I find it disturbing that it appears many may be condoning his behaviour, and putting all the blame for the incident on the teenaged player. If she was an incorrigible, it is unlikely she would have been recruited in the first place, and unlikelier still that she would be still be a player on the team with regular ice team a year later.

Re: UNH Women's Hockey 2014 - 2015 Looking FORWARD to the game~

It is one thing to hold him accountable by removing him from the job. That is an issue to be debated. To try someone criminally for insignificant alleged contact is poor judgment by the prosecutor, and seems that the "victim" has a say in whether to pursue it, and given that she suffered no apparent issues (other than reportedly being promised a scholarship and a guaranteed spot on the team), the more mature decision would be to let it go. Pursuing it suggests extreme narcisism/victimhood.

And I generally side with athletes over coaches, even if the players are reportedly less authority inclined (see Alex Leavitt).

Re: UNH Women's Hockey 2014 - 2015 Looking FORWARD to the game~

It would be really cool to take the most recent topic out of this thread, and talk hockey here.

Vilma Vaattovaara is headed for National Training Camp in Finland over the Christmas break, and Ashley Wilkes was recognised by the U for her performance last weekend. They both kept the Wisconsin games from getting really ugly (as in BC vs Harvard).

DURHAM, N.H. – Ashley Wilkes (North Pole, Alaska) of the women’s ice hockey team and Daniel Dion (Cedar Park, Texas) of the men’s basketball team are featured in this week's Service Credit Union Student-Athlete Spotlight. This information and more can be found in the Wildcat Weekly Roundup.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Ashley Wilkes, women’s ice hockey

Ashley, a sophomore from North Pole, Alaska, recorded a career-high 44 saves in the University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team’s 5-0 loss to third-ranked University of Wisconsin at the Whittemore Center on Nov. 29.

The 5-foot-9 goaltender recorded double-digit saves all three periods. Ashley made 17 stops in the first period, which is her highest total in a single period. She then held the Badgers scoreless in the second stanza on 13 saves and made 14 saves in the third period.

In four games played – including three starts – this season, Ashley has a 1-2-0 record with a 4.06 goals-against-average and .879 save percentage. Her other season highlights include a 21-save effort in a 5-1 home win against the University of Vermont on Nov. 8.

Ashley had a 3-10-0 record with a 2.74 GAA and .899 save percentage in 14 games (all starts) last year as a freshman. She earned the win in her collegiate debut Oct. 27 at Penn State University with 17 saves in the 3-1 victory. Ashley started nine consecutive games spanning Nov. 16, 2013 to Jan. 18, 2014.

In 18 career games, Ashley has a 4-12-0 record with a 3.00 GAA and .894 save percentage.

I don't think swearing at a player is unacceptable.* You'll fire every D1 men's coach in the nation if that is the standard. Or perhaps, because of their gender it's a different standard?

* If a coach is swearing and yelling all day/every day, they won't be coaching long simply because it doesn't work.

I don't think the standards of behaviour should change at all because of gender. The only difference is that while swearing in small doses may light a fire under a male and be later forgotten, it will more than likely make a girl shut down and she will dwell on it indefinitely.

Virtually anyone, male or female, will swear on the odd occasion in the heat of the moment. That's not what I'm talking about.
But swearing at players (or employees) as a matter of course is no more or less acceptable than players swearing at their coaches (or managers). It shows lack of respect both ways.

And I agree with you that swearing and yelling constantly merely results in being completely tuned out, no matter the gender.

While I might take my vacation around Coach McCloskey's trial, I have to agree with DC and talk hockey now......yesterday Brittney Redlick, #15 for the Wildcats, had to retire from hockey due to having numerous concussions over the years....while this isn't an earth shattering event as things go, all day I kept thinking what it would be like to take away my life long dream! Hockey gave Brittney a way out of Saskatchewan, bringing her to UNH as a business major....so now she'll have the chance to see what new challenges await, but I for one will miss seeing her skating her butt off, giving her all for her Wildcats.....best of luck with future endeavors Britt, but I hope we'll still see that winning smile at the Whitt....cheers!

This is happening to way too many players, and is a very sad day---best wishes going forward to her.

All my best to Britt as well, and a very big shout out to her parents, who have have been great supporters of the team, the program, and their daughter, and who had to witness a career ending injury. I hope our paths continue to cross.

Don't know how much can be taken from last night, as it seems that {Proviced is having a tough year too, but it is always nice to beat the Lady Goons.

The problem that many have is that nobody would have batted an eye if this involved a men's team, even in this day and age.

Her presence on the team is hardly indicative of the representation of her behavior being exaggerated. Allegedly the only reason she was on the team last year was because McCloskey agreed to help $carano out with Title IX compliance. It also doesn't look good for a player who was on the verge on not even being on the team, that she is now rumored to be a scholarship player after the incident last year.

Re: UNH Women's Hockey 2014 - 2015 Looking FORWARD to the game~

Can anyone explain why today's exhibition game between UNH and the Boston Blades was canceled?? I heard some rumors of "poor ice condtions", but nothing reported on the UNH website??

If it's the same problem that forced the postponement of the Men's game against Providence barely over a month ago, then I'm going to be ticked.

The Blades tweeted that it was a refrigeration issue.

Re: UNH Women's Hockey 2014 - 2015 Looking FORWARD to the game~

So it's the end of the first quarter with the Pats up14-0......so as I take a break from Phil Simms' yammering, I have to give congrats to our Wildcats for an especially satisfying weekend. We all know that this isn't the Wildcats of a few years ago where a weekend sweep was the norm, so we enjoy not just picking up 4 badly needed points but the hope that Coach Witt's offensive theme and strategies are beginning to solidify! While I'm an enthusiast, I'm not nuts, so I can't remember when we last put just shy of 100 shots on goal in a 2 game set! (55 and 42 resp.) So I'm going to enjoy this weekends results not only for what they do for our league standing....not only in the hope that the players take a deep breath and enjoy their grit and determination paying off for a change,....but I'm hoping that our offense can maintain it's aggression and accuracy! With how Vilma and Ashley have held the fort so admirably, a little offense can go along way! Enjoy Wildcats......now if we could only get rid of Phil Simms!

PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
#13 AMY BOUCHER, NEW HAMPSHIRE

(Fr., F; Edmonton, Alb.)
Boucher recorded three points on two goals and an assist in three games for the Wildcats last week. Her two tallies came during a weekend sweep over Hockey East rival UConn. The freshman's goal Saturday tied the game for New Hampshire to force overtime, where the Wildcats claimed victory before securing their first back-to-back wins of 2014-15 Sunday.

WHEA CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
#35 VILMA VAATTOVAARA, NEW HAMPSHIRE

(Jr., G; Veikkola, Finland)
Vaattovaara stopped 51 of the 54 shots she faced in two league wins at UConn and recorded another 23 saves in a mid-week loss to No. 5 Harvard. In three games last week, the junior backstop posted a 2-1-0 record, .913 save percentage, and a 2.28 GAA. Hockey East

HOCKEY EAST WEEKLY TOP PERFORMERS

Jonna Curtis, UNH (So., F; Elk River, Minnesota) Had three points (1g, 2a) in a weekend sweep of UConn.

Amy Boucher, UNH (Fr., F; Edmonton, Alberta) Registered a point in all three UNH games (2g, 1a) and won 31 of 62 faceoffs.

I would personally add Amy Schlagel to the list, not just for her game winning OT blast from the point Saturday, but her on the glass body slam and subsequent ricochet backward!

WHEA NEWSFEED

WILDCATS FIRING: UNH rifled off a season-high 55 shots Saturday in a 3-2 OT win at UConn followed by 42 shots in Sunday's 3-1 win to help Hilary Witt's squad to the first back-to-back wins of 2014-15. The Wildcats' previous high was 34 shots on net.

CHULI STAYS HOT: UConn junior goaltender Elaine Chuli made 52 saves Jan. 17 against UNH, her fourth 50+ save performance of the season.
