UNH Wildcats-The Back Nine and Beyond!

These really point out to a couple of things not talked about here today and that's the work of Anthony Wyse in the D zone. Did yeomans work clearing pucks amd stayed out of the box doing it. We will need that this coming weekend.

Also just how much Shane E means to that line up. Saw an interesting post about before and after injury stats; quite a diff. One could say the competition got a bit stiffer but make no mistake he makes a difference. And a mention about how well McNick played.

Not sure why the lines flipped and not sure how much of a difference it made if anyone has input do share. Would like to see the PP be more successful going forward and hope this is the start of scoring for Patrick Grasso. Good work out there winning a game you should win! Go 'Cats!!

Re: UNH Wildcats-The Back Nine and Beyond!

OK so we've now completed the season through November, and UNH stands at 7-4-1, nationally ranked just outside the Top Ten, and with a PWR that's at least in the mix. We've got about 60 posts to go before USCHO calls time on this thread, and the next installment of The Quest isn't due until after the Providence home-and-home next weekend. I've got some fun & games planned for afterwards, but in the meantime ... who do you folks feel has been the MVP to date for your 2017/2018 UNH Wildcats? In alphabetical order, here are some of the prominent (and not-so-prominent) candidates, brought to you by your friends at WIS Productions:

* Max Gildon - impact frosh defenseman, team's second leading scorer;
* Benton Maass - another solid frosh defenseman, actually tied with Gildon in points;
* Michael McNicholas - team's overall leading scorer to date;
* Danny Tirone - ever-present in the UNH goal, more disciplined and reliable, earning his time; or
* Coach Dick Umile - it's all about him and The <s>Quest</s> March for the NRN, and he's inspiring his troops

Thoughts? Don't be shy now ... :D

Shane Yzerman (spelling just for Chuck). 6-0-0 with, 1-4-1 without. Simple math. 😁

* Incredibly Weak Non-Con
* UML Early
* Colgate w/o Point
* Weak HE

Schedule-Maker for MVP

Ok I will play along here to advance the thread cause. Am all about the D so I'm partial to DT for your "MVP" to this point...

Again?!? Danny Tirone is HE DPOW of the week for his 34 save shut out victory over Yale this past weekend. Tirone has earned this recognition twice this season and 6 other HE awards in his career as a Wildcat. Congrats Danny Tirone!

Re: UNH Wildcats-The Back Nine and Beyond!

Gee Chuck I don't think Dan is playing by the rules... :p

Hard to disagree with either of the "outside of the box" nominations, to be honest, HR. As commissioner, "Peaches" has certainly done his paisan a solid with the schedule this year, and Aerman makes a great argument for <s>Eiserman</s> Yzerman (even better! :) ) so I'm not going to belittle either pick. I thought McNicholas was arguably the weakest of the player nominees, and I think it's pretty obvious the other guy on my list was there to stir the pot a little. :D

Just going with the player nominees (including Yzerman), I'm a solid lean for Tirone so far (surprise! OK not), but Gildon is neck-and-neck with him at worst, and if he can become consistently more effective defensively, on top of his puck movement and offensive skills, he could be a runaway no-brainer by season's end.

Re: UNH Wildcats-The Back Nine and Beyond!

The schedule-maker is the team's best defender!

UNH has not yet faced one opponent in the top third of the national goals per game table. Their first such test will take place this weekend when they face a Providence team, that just barely sneaks into the top 1/3 (20th out of 60), and represents the first team they'll meet who is currently averaging three or more goals per game (3.00). The only team on their entire 2018 schedule currently scoring more than three goals per game is Northeastern. It is a schedule reminiscent of the second half of the 2014-15 season...

Brilliant if you ask me... Believe that was the season we rattled off 8 or so straight, made it to the Garden. Hope we're up for this weekend it's a big one. Go 'Cats!!

If you had listed Yzerman he'd have gotten the nod but DT was to me the obvious choice. (for me that is!!) I hope others will think out of the box for your little contest as well...BTW Aerman those amazing analitics you provided was what I was alluding to. He makes a huge difference out there.

Seriously Dan just fooling with you...and hope our improved D will be able to manage what PC brings. We normally have decent games with them; close as I recall. NU worries me more to be honest!! Go 'Cats!!

My goodness, I'm not sure I've ever seen the phrase "NU worries me" ever uttered in a UNH thread in my lifetime. :eek:

Times, they are a changin' ...

I know right? Practically sacrilege :eek: New normal? But we can score goals as well.

That's the spirit!!!! Snively65 have you picked your MVP yet??? Going to have to miss the Army game to attend the annual better half's Christmas party...ugh. :( You're right! Who CARES about NU? :D

Re: UNH Wildcats-The Back Nine and Beyond!

What should we expect from PC? Last year swept by them 3-0 Schneider, 3-2 'Whitt. Improved D this year going to help? PP that has lagged a bit needs to work? Can Umile take another step towards the NRN? Inquiring minds want to know!

Any wins this weekend would be HUGE steps towards the NRN. Looking ahead, he could still get there theoretically if UNH runs the table through the end of 2017. Don't see that happening (but would be psyched if it did), but this weekend in some ways sets the table for the run through the Brown game in early 2018. That's where the majority of the *damage* needs to be inflicted, and seeing their return to form last weekend against Yale makes me think *maybe* I was a bit pessimistic about this coming weekend? But then again, the recent stretch against UML/BU/BC gave us plenty of evidence that UNH isn't up to that level, and I think PC is closer to that level than the likes of Yale and others UNH has faced earlier. I think this weekend gives us an updated glimpse (and UNH a second chance) to see if the 'Cats can hold their own with the top of the league. Failing that, then it's all about the NRN, and somehow finding a back door into the national tourney. JMHO.
