UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Agree on the UNH break out problem. Puck comes up the boards and the forward is turned back into danger. Not good. Looks like UVM picked up on some of what Maine was doing.

Hope that Souza has a different break out plan to counter. I am worried that they do not, otherwise we would have seen it some time in the last 7+ periods...

Hate to broach this subject, but do you and Greg feel that it’s more pronounced when we play away games vs. at home on the big sheet? Seemed to be more of an issue tonight.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Couple of things: the PP but we know that. Anyway I was sitting at the opposite end and saw that puck go in top shelf stood up and clapped in fact !! And man Max slashed that stick so hard his blade flew into the stands!

#1 Star Mike Robinson was rock solid tonight (as was Lekkas) congrats on the shut out. UvM had their chances in fact prob more grade A’s than us (someone can correct me if I’m off base here) and he was up to the test. All in all hard fought 2 pts.

Let’s do it again ‘Cats!!

Should have started a UNH-UVM weekend game thread, like the UNH-Maine (Don't call us UMO) thread. Then, when the weekend is over, UVM could adopt the game thread to replace their season thread, and be like Mike, I mean Maine.

Almost did!!

Just another reason to narrow the big sheet when it gets dug up to repair the chilling system.

HR, was the Gutt a sell out on Friday night? I am thinking that perhaps many of the locals will be away at their ski chalets on Saturday night, so maybe it might be worth driving over.

Just checked out the highlights on the Hockey East site. Both Robinson snd Lekkas made big time stops.

What a snipe by Grasso!

Seems to be the same problem the last 7+ periods regardless sheet size. UNH does not have a good variety of break outs. So it seems if you design your D to have someone on the far wall you can bottle them up. The only scary varient is Gildon, yet he goes behind the net so you have time to adjust.

They need some other break out. There are a bunch of little wrinkles other teams do. This seems more ghost of coaches past related rather than rink size.

Since BC sucks, thought I'd pop in to say congrats on the turnaround this year. Souza should be COTY runner-up.

Don’t think it was a sell out. You should be good even if the locals don’t go to their ski chalets!

Not the size of the rink, it’s the coaching. Our breakouts are too predictable, up the boards and out. We have two or three guys who are capable of carrying the puck out by themselves or making passes up through center ice. Last night they didn’t do much of either. It appeared to me, watching on the iPad, that once UNH got it in the UVM zone they could control things. The trick is carrying the puck in. See what Souza cooks up tonight.

Btw, according to CHN, the attendance was 3700 and change. I believe the GUT holds over 4,000.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

There are a bunch of other break outs other team use.

BC has a 3 man one I like, puck comes around from the D and the wing can either carry it up the boards or tap it back to the center at the face off dot.

Maine had a crazy 4 man one they used a couple times last weekend. Lots of short little passes.

Another is to slide the wing lower in the zone, back down the boards to provide more space to work with...

UNH had been plagued in the past by this problem.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

We are all Black Bear fans tonight! UNH has a shot of moving up in the HE standing if we and Maine can win. We have to play better on our PP’s (no shots on 3 attempts) and shutdown the open slots UVM had all night. Game could’ve gone either way....

Can’t say enough about the work done by Mikey last night...also kudos to Capt Marcus Vela he was tough all night esp on the boards...more of that tonight please and thank you!! Hope to see you there Snively65!!

Let’s roll ‘Cats!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

If UNH and Maine win tonight we will be tied for third place in HEA with BC. After tonight, games in hand will be:
Maine, Providence - 1
BU, NU, BC - 2

After tonight our remaining five games are against NU and UML. Winning three would be impressive.

After tonight Maine's six remaining games are against Merrimack (2), BC (2), UMA (1), BU (1). If we had that schedule, I'd like to think we could win four.

Temporarily holding a third place tie is a nice achievement, but distancing ourselves from ME is goal number one. Playing 2 of 3 at UMA is a tough challenge.

Go Providence!?!

No, wait...

Currently lunching at Woodstock Station on the way to Burlington. Hope to see Ref, 65, and a win tonight.

Great post sir! Thanks for laying it all out. Regardless...not too bad for a team that was picked 10th going in. We still have a lotta work on the plate! Go SouzaCats!!

Not at all the rink? 15 feet. Space, time, decision-making all the same? C'mon, man...

The argument has been made for years. Back in the nineties and early aughts Minnesota was a force. You might remember that they won back to back national championships, one against UNH. In all those years they played on the Olympic sheet at Mariucci Arena. Now they are mediocre, playing .500 hockey at best. What changed? UNH is no different. They had a huge advantage 20 years ago when playing at home, winning over 80% of their games at the Whit. Now for the past half dozen years they have not. What changed? I’ll await your answer.
