Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Just goes to show you can't 'rest on your laurels' of the past and if you don't get up to speed with how the rest of the planet is doing things especially in the area of recruiting...you're going to continue to watch from the sidelines. If what UMass coach Greg Carvel and ASU coach Greg Powers have been able to do in a relatively short period of time doesn't make the point, I don't know what does.

It's a new era (has been for awhile) in college hockey. You either figure it out or complain about your locker rooms....Correct me if I'm wrong here veterans but early inklings of this would have to be the Yale/Union NC's...who knew those two teams would do what they did??? Interesting...just goes to show it CAN be done. And there's no reason on this earth why we can't be one of those teams... (I have a ton of confidence in our program btw) Get busy living or get busy dying...to coin a phrase from my fav movie....

HR, yes it is a new era. As you and many others note on recent posts, these ain't the "good old days" for many teams. That is reason for hope and also points out that it isn't just us or them, it is many of the former top teams. You could have added PC to your list of "what the..." to winning a national championship. I remember walking out off Snyder that year after we took them out of the QFs and their fans didn't think they would make the group of 16. I think they went in as the 16th just as Yale did. Like the question of what a recruit is looking for in a school, so does peaking at the right time and getting on that wave add to the list of variables that allow a team to win or keep them from it.
BC and BU still appear to be getting more than their share of top talent but it hasn't paid huge dividends lately. For us I believe that solid recruiting and great coaching will get us back to respectability. And that is the first step, and if we continue winning a few more, we are getting on track. for a while we thought it was the Norm bus, now it is the Greg C. bus. Both fine coaches but time will tell if they have what it takes to get to and win the big one.

HR, yes it is a new era.

I posted this on the BU thread just for perspective (in response to some lamenting how far BU has "fallen"):

These teams are all BELOW #20 in the PWR (NCAA Championships in parenthesis):
- North Dakota (8)
- Michigan State (3)
- Michigan (9)
- BU (5)
- Minnesota (5)
- Wisconsin (6)
- BC (5)

Total Championships: 41

All BIG TIME programs. If the field were selected today, NONE of them make the NCAA Tournament.

These teams are in the Top 10:
- St. Cloud (0)
- UMass (0)
- Ohio State (0)
- Quinnipiac (0)
- Arizona State (0)
- Western Michigan (0)

Total Championships: 0

Enough said. The landscape has changed. Things don't stay the same forever...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Get busy living or get busy dying is right. (Felt the last few years UNH was busy dying)

Or another that is appropriate right now... It is not about the best players it is about the right players...

You don't necessarily need a bunch of high NHL picks that are one or two and done. You need the right mix. It still needs to be talent, some 4 year little guys with wheels and hands, a few late bloomers you need to keep the NHL away from, and some 2-3 and done high end guys.

It is building a balanced portfolio

You are so right PC belongs in that list as well. All of those teams exhibited great work ethic, had strong coaching, and excellent goal tending. Strong where they needed to be strong. Your points about coaching/recruiting are the keys and I like the direction we are heading. As was pointed out by chickod's post, things never stay the same so....(Oh, and looking forward to the Souza bus :D )

Patriots stay the same with head coach and the goat, right?

Mighty quiet ‘round these parts. There’s more action on the Maine-UNH thread, all from Mainuhs.

2-point weekend ahead.

Quiet, like when Robert Liscak shushed nearly 18,000 Gopher fans at the Exel Center with less than 5 minutes remaining in the 2002 NC game?
