UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

Watcher, I've never understood this mindset that because Player A commits to a school, his teammate, Player B should also. Are you taking into account that Player A may not be a leader or the Player B may not be a follower? Or, more likely, regardless of their personalities, most of these kids want to forge their own path? College recruiting is a cut throat business as well. Maybe coach doesn't want Player B. Ever think of that.

Greg, you mentioned earlier that UNH brought in a player (I forget the name) in an attempt to get Sean Collins to play at UNH; I heard at the time that Sean's teammate Steve Saviano, a year ahead of Collins at Reading High, was that player.

I have returned from snowbirding in Florida to replace 1932 here. :-)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

Something I came across tonight that may be relevant to some of the recent discussion here:

What should perhaps be of even greater concern to clubs and the league, however, is that high prices threaten to stop the next generation of supporters coming through. "I think what's significant is the age of the matchgoing supporters now," Herhily suggests. "At Arsenal, the average season ticket holder is in their fifties and, with the best will in the world, a fiftysomething is not going to make the same amount of noise and contribution to the atmosphere as someone in their teens or early twenties. What teenager can afford an Arsenal season ticket now?," he asks. In an economy that's already hostile to a debt-ridden generation being faced with prohibitive house prices and exploitative zero-hour contracts, the answer is very few.
Squeezed fans, silent stadiums: the myth of Premier League atmosphere

In addition to finding new ways to engage current students, UNH should be aggressively targeting recent grads who still live in the area. Beer sales would also help capture those over 21 in the 18-35 demo. Major League Soccer has had great success targeting the energy and exuberance of this age group.

Excellent point, Cloud. No one - and I mean no one - is doing a better job of courting the younger demographic right now than MLS. You look at it, and it's a league that's barely 20 years old, built off the back of the '94 World Cup in the US, in the aftermath of a string of failed leagues and failed strategies to short-cut the development of the world's game. It got off to a slow start, but they had a plan, working with grassroots support as opposed to "Let's buy Pele and Beckenbauer, pack 'em into Giants Stadium, and they'll bring everyone else along." It took incredible patience and vision, but finally - despite the doubters and the naysayers - it's a legitimate 5th North American major league, and they got there because they worked hard, worked long, targeted to grassroots 20 years ago .... and now those kids are young adults, who identify with the sport, and are not only supporting a booming domestic league (MLS) but also have the various networks fighting with each other for rights to things like the Premier League, Bundesliga, etc. that no one a generation ago would have ever imagined possible. Eureka.

In the meantime, the UNH "marketing" department has squandered a waiting list that could choke a horse from the turn of the century, is leaking long-time supporters like the post-iceberg Titanic (did that just for you, EJ :D ), and people like Greg and dozens of friends of mine who used to be season ticket holders don't even so much as get a call when they drop their tickets. And as I've said on here several times before ... I have been surrounded by young athletes living within a 10 mile radius of Durham for the last 15 or so years, and when I mention "UNH Hockey" to most of them, they seem surprised that this actually exists two towns over. To them, "hockey" means either the Bruins, or the so-called "Kings of NH (Goon League) Hockey" playing over in ManchVegas.

I'm not sure if I'm more P.O.'ed at the folks in charge of marketing UNH Hockey - starting with our very own BS35+5 - or with Joey Buttons at Hockey East HQ, who has been handed one of the greatest possible competitive league concepts ever invented - y'know, a league where you can pretty much drive to ALL of your school's games, home and away, where games are affordable, with storied programs with a ton of history everywhere, all these subtle little regional squabbles waiting to be exploited, in what is generally described as a hotbed area for the sport - and they STILL play second banana to irrelevant local hoops programs when it comes to press/overall exposure.

Did I mention how much it hurts to watch this great part of the season from the sidelines yet again? :(

While I still possess a modicum of credibility I'm going to go ahead and suggest that, sticking with the music theme, the title for the season thread should be "The Final Countdown"

And, it's gone... :D

I thought next season's thread title should have something to do with "Blackjack"...you know the quest for that magic number of 21

Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

I have two suggestions though. First, how about making it a priority that UNH recruit hard on the top couple of New Hampshire players each year. I can tell you that people in the stands question why BU, BC or even Lowell has a NH kid who is killing us. Why didn't e rcuit him, they'll ask. Second, how about having some pre-season practices outside of Durham? Maybe in Concord, Manchester, Salem, Nashua. Have the youth hockey teams there, do some autographs and the like. Seeing college guys in the flesh is a big deal to ten year olds, believe me.
Total agreement on the first, going back to at least Freddy Meyer. I have heard that some NH players have little interest in UNH. Also like the second idea. Perhaps academics, study time is a concern? Travelling to these rinks would remove 3 - 4 hours time from players' days.

At least for those of us attending the Regional tomorrow we get to see the UNH logo painted on the ice and on the boards....sigh.:cool:
Tell me about it. As you all know (coz I've told the story ad nauseum) attending the 2013 Regional began my UNH fandom odyssey so I have fond memories of the first game (less the injuries to Goumas/Downing and the first exposure to the UML onslaught with Connor H in goal and I do believe we've only beaten them twice since then but I digress). Still, I'll go (to see the hockey) and lament 1000 times at least about us not being there, but relish in just one more chance to watch college hockey live. I obviously need a life. Oh, and one more thing, talk about history repeating itself? Just look at the Bruins...need I say more?

Hack.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

....and BTW, count me with those who had season tix for 15+ years - also never heard a peep when I didn't renew a few years back (besides the normal spammy emails I unsubscribed from).

You'd think they would do WEIT to reach out to fans like yourself to at least find out why...and what could they do to get you back. I know last season I received the survey. Wonder if we will get one this season? I'd say the best thing they did as far as 'improvements' went (at least from my perspective maybe other STH's have other thoughts) was the ability to get in just a little sooner and shucks that decreased cost for a soda was certainly a bargain. ;) This season I am on the fence about being a STH. Gotta cut back on the hockey expenditures if I wanna retire sooner than later! :p I figure I can get in for a reduced price and still sit where I always have BUT then I think that by spending the extra money at least it might benefit the program overall so most likely, I'll fork over the $$ once again...

What is it they say: don't ask a question you don't want to know the answer to. Could have been uncomfortable for Marty if 80% of the former season tix holders said Dickie was the biggest problem. Much easier to imagine that the Jumbletron is the missing feature, and work on getting that done for the remaining 600 fans.

I thought the magic number next season was 14?

Oh - yeah, almost forgot - 21 wins gets us into the national tourney. Gotcha.

Seems realistic and so attainable for a 10th place team losing its two top players, which didn't start recruiting in earnest until a few weeks ago. Piece of cake ...

How's about " Closing Time" or..."Don't Think Twice it's Alright" or "Na Na Na..Hey Hey Hey...goodbye" Actually I do like the "Final Countdown" very Rockeyesque! :D

Which, of course, lends credence to the theory that changing the coach doesn't always help. The coach can't play, right? Just some "devil's advocate" food for thought... :D :D :D

So the answer is get rid of the player procurement guy. Don Sweeney and Dick Umile.

Actually the answer is to get rid of Cam Neely, who still thinks this is the 70s and smashmouth hockey. We don't need speed and skill (we don't need, let's see, Phil Kessel or Tyler Seguin - those guys are only human highlight reels). We want to grind and knock your head off and win 2-1. (not that I sound bitter or anything...) :D

edit: I'm down with Bam-ba-Lam. The worryin' part is for others.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2017 Off-season: The Clash Question

U2 So cruel

We crossed the line
Who pushed who over?
It doesn't matter to you
It matters to me

We're cut adrift
We're still floating
I'm only hanging on
To watch you go down

My love

.....

Oh love
To stay with you I'd be a fool
Oh, huhh
Sweetheart
You're so cruel
