UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Chairs?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

Ticket discounts? We give them three year contracts.

I just dislike the "transition." You are either retired, or active. Don't create an artificial construct just because you want to hang on a bit longer BUT STILL pick your successor. It smacks of selfishness.

Kind of what I noted on 9/17:

Bottom Line: One has to look out for oneself .... and therefore if the current coach cannot be a "king" there is now the opportunity to at least be a "kingmaker." One must do what is best for oneself ....

The motivational transparency of this is really not that difficult to see .... unless of course your caught up in a world of continuous cheerleading, and being an apologist.

... which is why I'm absolutely convinced this whole 3 year thing is up for grabs if UNH (somehow) begins to move back up towards its level of national prominence from a decade or so ago.

Having been designated "coach in waiting", what is Coach Souza then left to do but simply wait it out?

At that point, we'll probably have to put 'watcher on suicide watch. ;)

I'd like to think that if things fell apart this season, the "transition" might pick up speed ... but looking at the schedule (geez, who puts that together?) it'll take some doing for UNH not to improve on last season's RS record.

Early schedule should be a confidence builder; perhaps UNH can be 11-1 when Falcons visit the Whitt on November 28th?

Umile timed this to his quest for 600 and the senior status for his 11 person 2018 senior class. With that large a class, UNH will be 4th or 5th in HE, and Umile can take his "victory lap" with 600 wins.
After that comes a serious rebuild, made far worse by the loss of 1) Masonius, 2) Ryczek and 3) Farabee. There is no way Umile would want that as his final year.

At that point, we'll probably have to put 'watcher on suicide watch. ;)
Nah, I've come to terms with this. When they ****ed away Laleggia I stepped away from investing my heart on whether a 17 year old kid is going to my alma matter -- especially when I can't blame them.
I now look at this from an organizational view, shaking my head at complete lack of accountability for those making bad decisions, figuring that there might be an adult in the Admin who would dare tinker with Umile's fiefdom. I only wish Coach Umile had spent as much of his "political capital" getting real important changes rather than remaining the State's highest paid employee for three more years and keeping his friends as assistant coaches. Its staight out of the Vladimir Putin/Medvedev playbook.
I was slowly coming out of my hybernation figuring that within the next year or two Umile might realize what was best for the long term program health, but this "transition" has me in purgatory.

As a UNH fan, I still have hopes that Souza can make this happen. It is unfair to judge him when he is operating under the shadow of Coach Umile, and is therefore hampered in what he can sell to the recruits. I don't know what to make of the inability to keep Borek's recruits, and the lack of recruiting news. The positive side of me hopes that this is a change from Borek's quantity/"bring in a 3rd line upside kid every couple of months" and is instead focusing on quality. The BCHL and AJHL college showcases were this week, and I hope we see some positive results soon so we get a sense of Souza's footprint.

I'd like to think that if things fell apart this season, the "transition" might pick up speed ... but looking at the schedule (geez, who puts that together?) it'll take some doing for UNH not to improve on last season's RS record.

Or get the coach his magical 600 wins so he can cap his career. Maybe we can do 42 games with AIC next year and he'll call it quits a year early?

You're probably right about the *magic* 600, 'watcher. But if the "Umile 2018 Victory Tour" actually sees them snagging another RS title, going deep at the Garden and/or making a long-awaited return to the FF ... assuming that last piece comes up that usual 1-2 wins short of paydirt, I honestly can't see him stepping away. BS35+5 would have to drag him kicking and screaming out of the job, if he were to get that close and come up short.

It's an interesting dynamic, especially depending on how Souza (and Stewart) go about their recruiting duties between now and then.

Best shot at FF in 2016-2017, I think.

Let's hope, the sooner the better. I just don't see Umile stepping away quietly IF the program gets close again.

If it turns out this was just all about 600, then I'll lose a bit of respect for the guy. 600 is just a number.

Impressive sure, but if someone is coaching at his age, I'm hoping it's to complete "unfinished business". And despite his detractors, it's really only the one (1) thing that's missing from Umile's legacy. If it turns out it's for a number (or for the money), I'll be disappointed.

On another note Stevie Moses sent down to AHL from the Preds. As I recall he has a decent contract will get his 1mil regardless...

If he's got a one-way contract, yeah he's set regardless. Two-way contract, then not so good news.

Given his UFA status at the time of signing, I think (hope?) he was able to leverage a one-way deal. :)

I remember it being a one-way deal, which I imagine is the reason that he took it, as he was finally having some real scoring success overseas (Finland?). On the new thread, Eric Chevrier's name came up from 2011-2012 season, which was Stevie's last year in which he led the Cats in scoring. Seems like a long time ago.

I recently read a quote from the head coach saying that they expect him to be a big part of the team in Nashville this year, but that he needs a little time to get used to playing on the NHL sized ice again. And that they thought it would be better for him to get into games at the AHL level until he gets comfortable than it would have been to bench him and have him watching the NHL games from the stands.

Probably would have been easier to just say he didn't meet expectations at camp, and leave it at that. This way, they make it sound like he's not up to the extra physical contact. You can tell a player that privately, without needing to broadcast it to the rest of the NHL/AHL.
