UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

I do not know what they were thinking of when they scheduled a game at Gillette during football season. Somebody came to their senses as most of us believe the Pats probably think they have more football to play. I prefer Vt indoors to Gillette outdoors.

Well, the B's are hosting the Canadiens at Gillette during the New Year's holiday weekend, so the rink is going to be there regardless for that event, and perhaps they were looking to expand the "Foxboro hockey weekend" with some D-1 college action while the facility was fitted out for hockey? I'm pretty sure that's what they did when the B's and Flyers played at Fenway a few years ago - I think there were some college hockey games scheduled around that little *party* IIRC?

With the Pats playing Week 16 on the road, they do have a few days to put the rink up. And unless the Pats falter in the last few RS games, they should be able to avoid hosting a playoff game on January 10th ... but even then, they would have twice as much time to deconstruct the rink etc. than it took to put it up. Regardless, the stadium crew down in Foxboro looks to have a busy post-Christmas schedule on their hands.

You do realize that the Bruins and Canadiens are playing the NHL Winter Classic game at Gillette on New Year's Day? I had not heard of the aborted plan of UNH and UVM playing there the day before, but I did read last week that the newly created women's professional league (not sure of the acronym) will have a game at Foxboro on New Year's Eve. I believe Brian McCloskey is coach of the Boston team.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Might be wrong, but I think Brian coaches the old Boston team - the Blades- and not the new Boston team - the Pride. The Pride is the WNHL team.

I realize the B's and the Habs are playing on 1/1 but why move the UNH game on 1/2?

Must have been concerns about ticket sales maybe? Or one of the schools pulled the plug??

I'm guessing that the proposed UNH-UVM game was just one of several potential college hockey games that were in the works. I heard Cam Neely on the radio the other day (you can guess on which show) and he was saying that this go round is much different than the Fenway experience was, where it was in an unused stadium which could be there for a while and could have a festival type atmosphere. I always thought that the reason the HE schedule was a bit later coming out this year was because of potential Gillette games around the WC, (and that was confirmed by another poster) but apparently it just didn't work out. Which is fine with me. The whole outdoor thing jumped the shark a long, long time ago.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Agreed on the outdoor hockey venues jumping the shark. I went to one of the HEA Frozen Fenway double headers with UNH-UMO and UVM-UMass, I think, and besides being wicked cold, the sight lines were horrendous. Fortunately, I was with a friend who is a Sox season ticket holder and pays extra for access to whatever the indoor facility is called above the right field corner, so we spent some time there watching parts of both games on TV while drinking Wachusetts Green Monster IPAs.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

......At the FOMH meeting someone asked Souza if he could bring back the clapping to O Fortuna before the game he said "I have nothing to do with that" as you'd expect. I think a lot of fans miss that, plus the "Your Wildcats" they would say before they would skate out between periods. Personally the video before the game is cool and all but I still long for the other intro. Ooops I promised I'd let that go.

I just heard the last Squeaky Mazz of 2015, which was excellent, and Hardy meshed it with O Fortuna perfectly. Need to bring that one back to the Whitt, but I said that about Wipe Out and Carlos Santana, also.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

I'm not sure the O Fortuna thing was even in the UNH songbook when Souza played?

Better he should have been asked about getting "Black Betty" back in the program. Or at least the pre-game "greetings" which used to be showered on the visiting team's starting line-up before BS35+3 decided to flex his muscles in defense of the casual hockey fans, who purportedly were horrified by such vulgar language. You know ... the same casual hockey fans who don't bother coming to the games anymore?? Genius, I tellya ...

Do the students still do the "Beat 'Em, Smash 'Em, Break His Face etc." chant these days? Or was that also deemed too graphic for the sensitive souls up in the stands??

Actually Chuck 'Black Betty' is in the mix on most nights albeit brief. No there is no such chant you mention....Seems like the 'tron does more of the entertaining during time outs. The Cat Pack Capts have a cheer repertoire too. Hey you should come to a game and see!!😉☺️

Black Betty used to be the music for when the 'Cats came out for the 2nd and 3rd periods. I think the current Dave Mathews piece for the start of the game has been that way since the early years of The Whitt (late '90's?). The "Also Sprach Zarathustra" lead-in (better known as the 2001 A Space Odyssey theme) I think was added early after the turn of the century (I love using that term :p ). There are always going to be tweaks and changes, but I've always loved the intro package at The Whitt, with the huge flag preceding the team out onto the ice. Still gives me goosebumps, and I should be too old for that. :)

Trust me, HR ... I'd love to be there more often, but my situation hasn't changed all that much from what it's been for awhile now, so I make it when I can, and follow the rest as closely as I can. I like what I've been doing - a lot - and I'm here because I always loved the UNH Hockey program, even when I was a teen down in Ambrose-Land. :) Given the choice between doing and watching ... I still enjoy doing both, but it's hard for me to walk away from doing. And doing is not something you can ... er, do in a half-hearted way. :o

Aw I'm just playin' with ya Chuck...let us know when you can make it to the 'Whitt would love to meet up!! I get it that there will be changes etc but somethings are too good to drop. Guess a student petition was presented to the powers that be to bring back O Fortuna but doubt that will help. Seems Black Betty shows up when the 'Cats are down a goal or two?

Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!

+1.

The most creative thing on the video board is the reintroduction of stick figure man. Hilarious.

Rumor has it...Fenway for 2016-2017 season?? That is all. ;)

Never see me at a Fenway game again. Unless you have never been to Fenway for anything, the entire experience is underwhelming. Terrible, terrible sight lines for hockey. As someone mentioned before, outdoor games have lost their lustre (jumped the shark was the phrase?). I absolutely hate the idea that UNH or, for that matter, any team, would give up a home game to play under less than optimum conditions just for the "experience." I've been to Fenway hundreds of times for baseball, maybe 3 or 4 for football, and once concert (Springsteen). Let's just say that Fenway is made for baseball, nothing else.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

It would be interesting to find out if the decision to play this year's Winter Classic in Foxboro had anything to do with dissatisfaction with the set-up at Fenway. Agree with most of the others - been there, fun for the novelty of being in that neighborhood when it's winter, but novelty is the key word there, as repeated trips (I made a second) only remind you the first one wasn't all that great to begin with.

Actually I thought the Liverpool and Celtic soccer matches were decent, even if the pitch was laid a little tighter than usual to fit into the quirky Fenway dimensions. Not freezing my backside off was also preferable. :)

BTW is it general knowledge that a current UNH player is sidelined for academic issues?
