UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

OK, yours truly managed to get back into town tonight just in time to veer off Rte. 495 on the way home to catch the end of the game. Kudos to the folks at the Merrimack box office for giving me a pass to catch the 3rd period - and some bonus time in OT - gratis. :) In return, I shall not further defame your sorry excuse for a D-1 arena further. :p I've been away so long ... it was the first time I entered the "complex" through the new entrance at the front. Lost my bearings upon arrival, and ended up walking 3/4's of the way around the rink to sit amidst most of the UNH fans. Without the old Expos' hat and another 10 or so years older, it was nice to be incognito. :)

So enough with the fluff ... what I saw out there for the final period and a half almost made me physically ill.

I am going to take some wise advice that my elders passed along to me many moons ago, and hold my peace for the evening, and see how things look/feel on further reflection tomorrow a.m.

But if it's anywhere near what I'm feeling right now about what I saw out there ... there are some sacred cows who are going to get a roasting, and some folks on here are probably going to hate me (more) for it for awhile.

Having said that ... I'm almost despondent seeing HR's post that former DRW Stanley Cup winning head coach Mike "Big Red" Babcock was in the house, and I somehow missed out. And you folks think I have a man crush on Bazin? Heh heh, it might be the "B" thing, as the list of my favorite hockey coaches certainly includes Bowman, Babcock AND Bazin. :) :) :) Maybe someday Borisenok or some other UNH "B" will take their rightful place (sorry Richie, Stewie and Souza) alongside that trio. It's always the guy after the guy who comes after THE guy anyway. Umile-Kullen-Holt ... B????-Souza-Umile.

Yeah, I've gone on for far too long tonight. Anyway, season's done after Sunday, sorry to say. :(

Well I'll be darned...Mike Babcock AND Chuck Murray in the house?!? If you were sitting amongst the UNH fans in section 12 he was right behind top row all night. In fact got a pic of him and saw him at the end of the game in the lobby.

Anyway...Geesh it's been a slog if a couple of days and I have that ticket for Sunday burning a hole in my pocket...at this point Chuck fire away! I suppose as long as you leave me out of it anything is bearable at this point. 😉..sighhhh looonnnggg season about to be made shorter perhaps as our
most glaring issues finally play out? 😳🙄 My students will be better off if I watch it online...

Wonder what Babcock was doing there?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

Eagerly awaiting Chuck's missive which should be a gem if the radio (thank goodness) broadcast from our home announcers was half of what was on display at Lawler. The individual and team SOG totals are pathetic given the apparent lack of attention in our defensive zone.

That would make sense. Didn't know he had a son on the team(Mc). Thanks for that.[/QUOTE

And let me tell you what a gem of a player Michael Babcock is!! Hustles to the puck has a nice forecheck game...good get for the Warriors.

As far as SOG's go and no I'm not letting our lack of obvious and on going D zone issues off the hook we are lucky to have had two stellar nights from DT. And while I haven't seen the faceoffs stats from last night it seemed we struggled there too.

Last night Vela, Eiserman and Nazarian seemed neautralized and besides Clelands amazing rocket of a goal we really lucked out even getting to OT after that horrendous first period. Had to struggle for everything last night. DU in his comments on the Mack report isn't happy about waiting a day to play me thinks it's a good thing...

Anyway wait til you see BvR on the ice big kid great skater!!

Chuck, you've gotta get out more often. I wasn't there last night but was on Friday. What you saw last night I can only guess was a microcosm of the season. Inability to keep the puck in the offensive zone, inability to keep it out of the defensive zone. Puck possession is dismal and has been all year. On top of that, the team has little speed, always a hallmark of UNH teams no matter how bad in other areas. Merrimack isn't much but, if these games had been played at the Whit, it would have gotten ugly because Merrimack can skate if nothing else.

I'll most likely be there Sunday night, the second half of a hockey doubleheader tomorrow (hometown Lynn Jets, second seed in the D3 North Sectionals, coached by neighbor's son along with Asst. Coach Jason Shipulski, play their first game at 11:40 am). I won't predict a win or a loss for UNH but I will predict that Tirone will once again have to make at least 40 saves if the team is going to have a chance to win.

I listened to the OT last night and discovered that Dan Parkhurst was doing the broadcast. Did he and UNH settle on a deal? I thought he was gone.

I do believe his deal was to be done after this season... which could come soon. He's got a band he's into and also as you know calls games for other teams/networks. Who will take his place?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

According to Mike McMahon from the Mack report:

In four head-to-head games this season, Merrimack has controlled 61.2% of possession against UNH (312-198 attempts).

Which only speaks to the obvious: DT . He really deserves two medals in Chuck's MBPBEHAM tourney!!!

I was told second hand that Dan and UNH could not come to an agreement. It was just a few weeks ago they had a tribute for him on the jumbotron, which I though was strange. I was going to ask his dad but didn't see him. Someone else told me the story that, at that point, he had not reached an agreement so he was leaving. That's why I was surprised to hear his voice last night. I think Dan is aces and that UNH is lucky to have him. I hope things do get worked out.

oh thanks for the inside info. Wasn't sure what the deal was just was under the impression he was ready to move onto other things...Turns out Pete Webster went to the high school I teach at and was inducted into the Athletic HOF this past September. Wish I was up on that would've attended the ceremony. I'll most likely listen into Dan's call Sunday rather than attend the game could be his Swan song and you are right; he's great....

ps. On the JD Tippett thingy...now you are ready for that question if you ever get it playing Trivial Pursuit. Such knowledge comes in handy ya know... ;)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Three) - Living in Interesting Times

Anyway, season's done after Sunday, sorry to say. :(

The overtime's were unkind to UNH last night, but I don't think that's the case. As much as Merrimack has outshot UNH, they're far from a dynamic offensive team - they've taken 70 more shots than UNH this season and scored 20 less goals. They chuck the puck on net from all over the ice - off angles, well outside the scoring areas, etc. As much as I hated the shots on goal debate, they are the definition of your argument, Chuck...

They are a challenged offensive team, without much finishing ability, which masks the weakness UNH has had all season keeping pucks out of the net. This gives the Wildcats a chance to keep the goals against down and lean on their superior offensive talent. So, I'll say there's a 60% chance UNH pulls it out on Sunday. The Mack will manage a pair of goals on 40+ shots (likely blowing a few more chances) because they're all Swedish..., but UNH's top line has a big night and the Wildcats win 4-2...

Unfortunately, the other two overtimes in HE last night will be their demise. With both BU and Northeastern coming back to win their respective game ones, UNH is that much more unlikely to draw Providence in round two. As long as the odds would have been against the Friars, that was their only chance to advance to the Garden based on the match ups. They weren't beating Notre Dame (if both BU and NU lost) and there is no way they're beating BC (since both BU and NU appear on the verge of advancing).

So you're six days off - UNH's season ends (mercifully!) on Saturday, March 12 in Chestnut Hill, Mass...

Spot on. THAT is the reason why despite the overwhelming disparity in shots on goal Merrimack is averaging less than two goals per game against UNH this season. Couldn't score in a brothel with a handful of $100's.

Like you, I expect the season to extend another weekend. What has surprised me more than anything is that we have yet to have a game in this playoff series decided because of a typical undisciplined penalty by the Warriors. Got to figure that luck runs out Sunday night.

Nice. Good for Babcock!

Regarding Parkhurst, the only beef I have with him is that he tells us way too often the time left on the clock. Last night, I swear he gave us the time like 27 seconds into the game. It's as if he doesn't know what else to say. Forget the time and just give us the play by play please!
