Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

There's something to be said for job security. All depends on how urgently the assistant coach would need (in their own mind, on their own timetable) to land the top job. Foley is only in his mid-30's, and by comparison Coach Umile was probably still coaching HS hockey at that age, before assistant jobs at PC and UNH finally landed him the top job at UNH in his early 40's.

When you look at it that way, Foley would be right on schedule to arrive at the top job at UNH at around the same age, when Coach Umile hits his early 70's  - assuming Foley gets this pending hire, of course. If someone else gets it ... guys like White and Ayers are roughly the same age as Foley, and Ciocco is a few years younger.

In comparison to the Quinn/BU situation ... there may have been promises or understandings there which did not come to pass, Quinn lost his patience, etc. Quinn is pushing 50 now, and at the time he left, he would still have been a good 10 years older than Foley and most of the other would-be younger UNH candidates we're discussing here. So while job security and the promises of a potential "foot in the door" at age 35 might be more important ... when you're 45, the clock is probably ticking on your head coaching ambitions, and you might tend to devalue job security a little bit, and act with a lot more urgency.

I've been in Quinn's shoes before (in an entirely different setting), and can totally understand why he would have felt the pressure to leave. And likewise, when I was Foley's age, I did not feel that same urgency, and could afford to be patient.

Besides the info on White, do we even know who is up for this coveted position? We know who's out there and available, but any idea/word on who has actually applied for the job? Is that public notice? Just curious...(and we know that info is out there...right? ;) ) I would think who ever wants this job would either be someone who is:

*looking to get started in college hockey/no threat to the head coach job (hey, it has to be said.)
*realizes it may be 'some time' before the head job opens...potentially/most likely the Foley example you cited and is willing to be 'patient'
*is in their last stages of coaching and sees this as a way to just finish up (God, I hope this isn't the case  )
*Is someone the UNH admin/coach U sees as a potential future head coach when the time comes (if this is the case, I hope/pray they choose wisely!)

Fun speculating, huh?

John Tortorella. Let's keep it in the family. Make for some interesting pressers.

Ha! I poked that around just fer fun....he is out of work, no? I'm sure the news will come through shortly...

You beat me to posting the same thing. Well played, Snives.

Thanks, wikdcatdc. And, thanks to Greg for triggering our memory with his Danny Dries line; funny that Dries and Caron should be mentioned together.

I was in DC for a NSF workshop when all of this new intrigue erupted, like a subglacial volcano in Iceland. :-)

This thread will now easily surpass 1000 posts; a fine tribute to Chuck's creative title smithing, whether or not he is picked to become the new associate hockey coach.

Good call; Jeff Cox and sonar, also. And, C-H-C, of course.

Gotta love those two UHL championships with the Mallards; a couple of good recruiting years with the likes of Connata and de la Costa could bring the prized hardware to UNH.

Stewart did not recruit Da Costa or Cannata to Merrimack. Darren Yopyk and Phil Roy were doing the recruiting when those two were recruited. That being said, I like Stewart a lot as an assistant coach and he is a tireless recruiter. Very focused and driven.

For what it is worth ..... played golf with Stewart a number of years ago and he did not seem to be quite as "self-promoting" as at least one of the candidates previously noted on this thread. Of course we were both born in Canada .... so maybe it is just a matter of "style" ....

Brilliant choice I think. Kudos to Umile.

Sorry Chuck. I hear you were a close second. :(

Somebody better check on him just in case....

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

I am not against Glenn Stewart but I question the logic.

UNH now has 3 offensively minded coaches. Looking at Stewart's experience it is with forwards and power play he does have some PK too. Who going to coach and develop d-men?

Additionally Stewart at 44 is older than I think I would have targeted. He is not in that 35 and more patient group Chuck referred to. He is likely not a head coach in waiting and maybe that isn't a bad thing.

But hey he has hair and isn't 55-plus.

Cool! Congrats to Glenn - he was fun to watch as a player and his recruiting resume is solid. I still have Stewie's road jersey from '94, his senior season. There's still blood on the front of it...not sure who's :)

Ok then, so who DID Stewart recruit during his time at Merrimack? The program has been backsliding competitively over the last few years, after topping out in 2010/2011. No doubt it's a tough place to recruit for, given the other nearby options, and the more recent rise of UMass Lowell. But all I'm hearing and reading here is that he's a great guy and a tireless worker. UNH needs more than that.

I don't want this to be taken as a shot at Merrimack OR against Coach Stewart, and if he's hired I'll be behind him and willing to keep an open mind. Heck - maybe this signals a plan to return to some of the more fertile recruiting areas north of the border, which haven't been the same since Coach Mac went over to the Women's side (and/or admissions issues, depending on what/whom you believe).

But I guess my initial reaction is that if Coach Stewart is brought on board ... it's a "safe" hire and not as compelling a hire as either a Foley or White or Souza or Ayers, or even Ciocco. I liked Stewart as a player, but he's old enough to be a father of most of the incoming recruits from here on out. Maybe this is Coach Umile's compromise on the "getting younger" behind the bench issue, while not going too young? I still can't help but believe one of the younger group of potential candidates - all of whom are at least 10 years younger than Stewart - would be a more dynamic hire, and better able to relate to the late teens in the recruiting pipeline.

Anyway ... we'll see how it all pans out, and if Coach Stewart is selected, he'll have my full support. Not my top choice though. JMHO.

I believe radio announcer extraordinaire Mike Machnik was responsible for Dacosta and Cannata coming to the 'Mac. ;)

I think Ayers or White come in next year as Head Coach .... and Stewart stays on as an Associate.

OK I'll bite, sonar ... only because it's you though. :p Why would Stewart stay as on an assistant/associate if he is overlooked for a younger outside candidate?

Chuck, Ciocco and Ayers have one year apiece behind the bench and on the road. Souza just finished his first year at UConn after two years at Brown, White, two years at Brown after a stint at Bentley. And then there's Foley, who appears to be the only one of the lot who has experience recruiting the same type of talent that UNH goes after. While I am more than mildly surprised that Foley is being beaten out by Stewart (if it is true), I'm not surprised that he didn't opt for the more inexperienced candidates. BTW, do we know that if there are any non-UNH alums as candidates?
