He'll be back next semester.
Oh yeah? You know something we don't? Do tell. He's off the roster, not enrolled at UNH. Sorry just hard to fathom...but I suppose stranger things have happened.

Stats have 20/20 vision... on past performance. Not so much on future endeavors. There's this little pest each and every game called an opponent. They have skates and carry sticks and try to disrupt every little thing you do. Your stats can be broken in 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 50 minutes. But trust me, more often than not, they are broken. For, or against, doesn't matter, they are usually broken. Tomorrow's stats will reflect that change.
I prefer my team just play better than yours. I don't care how many SOG we have... 10 or 45... as long as we outplay you. The law of averages says we win most of the time when we outplay the opponent. I'll take that.![]()
Don't judge DeSmith on one 'unfortunate incident':

Our team stats to date, if anyone's interested:

And yes, we have outshot our opponents! Yay!![]()
UNH has to pass up shots whenever possible. It's the only way to lose the SOG count and win games!!

haha... I look at those stats and think... 'perhaps Kelleher and Poturalski should shoot more'. But that's just going by the numbers. I've never seen these guys play, so for all I know, they're are a couple of stiffs that get credited with a goal because they are closest to the net when a d-man scores an own goal. So, UNH has 395 SOG vs Opponents with 312 SOG.
But, UNH has 30 Goals (7.6 % G/SOG) vs Opponents with 32 Goals (10.26% G/SOG).
Willows leads UNH with 51 SOG, and with 4 Goals (for 7.8% G/SOG) is tied with three others, including Kelleher with 22 SOG (for 18.2% G/SOG), Poturalski with 21 SOG (19.0% G/SOG), and Downing with 34 SOG (11.8% G/SOG).
So, Fivehole12 is spot on with his analysis leading into this weekend, and Willows should not shoot. Nor should our D-men shoot, as they have 88 SOG in total, with only 2 Goals (for 2.27% G/SOG). Shane Yzerman? He has 14 SOG, with 2 Goals (14.3% G/SOG), so fire away! "There is something fascinating about [statistics]. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact." (apologies to Mark Twain).

Stats don't tell the whole story.
Noting yourI understand you mostly jest, but you are correct, they should look to shoot more and the team should look to set them up because they are the most skilled shooters on the team. I don't give a rat's behind or I'd take the time to research G/SOG% for recent players like Butler and PT. Johnny Gaudreau's G/SOG% would be interesting as would, from different eras, Paul Kariya, Haydar and Krog.
Statistical averages like G/SOG%, goals, assists, points/game are very meaningful. My favorite UNH hockey statistic is for Bob Miller who played 65 games (51G 97A 148Pts, 2.27 Pts/game). Tied with Colin Hemingway who played 139 games (67G 81A 148Pts, 1.06 Pts/game) at #26 with 148 career points on the Wildcat Century Club list, who would be chosen first in a pick up game?
Hundreds, perhaps thousands of unemployed comedians and you're trying to be funny?Depends. Who had more SOG?

Go 'cats! Kudos for Marty. Couldn't resist. As my girlfriend will tell you, I will never stop trying, and never stop failing!! BTW, I actually agree with your original post on the meaningful nature of stats. Surprised Corsi and.or Fenwick haven't popped up during the discussion. Puck possession, anyone??
On another note, what a potentially huge weekend for the 'Cat family of sports. Best of luck to all (volleyball to score an upset in the NCAA's v. U of Washington - I can feel it!). Fordham scares me more than popped collars do. And don't get me started about UNI being on our side of the bracket.
FiveHole, you've been a welcome addition (as always) to the thread, as well. Necessary comic relief!!
Okay, back to the grind

UNH and Coach Dick Umile made statements on Casey DeSmith. School: He's eligible to return Dec. 20. Umile confirmed he won't return to team. Umile on DeSmith: "Our student athletes here at UNH are held to a higher standard than the general student body. Because of Casey's actions the weekend of Aug. 31 I've made the decision to dismiss Casey from the team."
