Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

I would agree snively...there are no gimme games in the FCS tourney. I would believe Coach Mac is preparing for Saturday as if Fordham is the 72 Dolphins. We'll see if the weather forecast changes as the week passes. Dry conditions are good for the UNH offense but if it's sloppy, then both teams play in the rain. Go Cats..

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

And, this latest loss may explain in part why we are not hearing from the BC fanboys on our thread?
Haha... This weekend just happens to be 'You Be The Coach' week at UNH, where the University of New Hampshire Athletic Department awards one lucky fan the opportunity to coach the UNH Wildcats for a weekend series. The identity of this years fan coach has yet to be announced, but we can speculate that the first pre-game talk might go something like this…

Fan Coach: Ok team, listen up. There's going to be a few changes this weekend. Let's talk about SOG. They are meaningless, unless we happen to put one in the net, which then means it is not meaningless, unless of course it happened in the first period, in which case, even if we happen to win the game 1-0, you will not be awarded a GWG. Understand?

Team: Huh?

Fan Coach: In a nutshell team, YOU TAKE WAY TOO MANY SHOTS!!! How can you expect to score by taking so many shots? You guys just don't get it.

Team: But coach, how can we score without shooting?

Fan Coach: Ahh Ha… great question. Short answer, you can't. My usual long answer… why waste your energy putting shots on net that are meaningless. Understand? Shots you put on net that you have absolutely no intention of putting past the goalie are meaningless shots and we must eliminate them from the game plan. I could go on and on with this answer, but my finger is sore right now from typing. So anyway, I am going to limit this team to a maximum 20 SOG per game. Got it?

Team: But coach, what if we have two guys in front of the net screening the goalie? Is that a good time to put a shot on net, even if it's just a weak wrister? It might just sneak by the goalie, or maybe one of our guys bangs home a rebound.

Fan Coach: A very good point, but it really all depends on what period the game is in. If it's the first period, I'd say no, don't take the shot because there is a high percentage of those plays that do not result in 'quality shots'. Keep in mind, a quality shot goes in the net… all other shots are meaningless. If it's not a quality shot, I don't want you taking it. And if you do, and the result is that it was a meaningless shot, then you just might be watching tomorrow night's game from the nickel seats? Capisce?

Team: Huh?

Fan Coach: OK… I see confusion on your faces. Let's say you had a lapse of hockey intelligence and actually took the above described shot… and we get lucky and score. You will be saved by the goal as the result is now a quality shot, but you will not be awarded with a GWG if the game ends 1-0. Quiz: What period were we in team? Answer: First period, remember? No GWG awarded in the first period!!! Dammit!

Team: Yes, Coach.

Fan Coach: OK, so now that we've established SOG and quality vs quantity SOG… wait, we went over that, right?
So, let's now focus on what happens with the 1-0 lead in the first period, ok? So, we are now the better team because we are ahead, 1-0, in the first. SO… we have to go into our prevent defense and keep the other team from scoring. Preserve the lead, take away their strength's, push them to the perimeter, don't let them shoot, don't let them score! Dammit!!!

Team: OK coach. But what if we get the puck and are able to play our game in their zone? Can we continue to try and score?

Fan Coach: Hello? Have you been listening to one word I've said? It's only the first period, and we're PRESERVING the 1-0 lead. Remember… you only get 20 SOG, that's it! When you reach that number, and I'm counting, you will be shut down from taking any further shots in this game. Got that? So I suggest that you dump the puck and get set up to play some more quality D… preserve that lead. Remember, games aren't won in the first period, they're won over the long haul. There's 40 minutes more to play in this game, so save those SOG for when you might need them, later in the game. For now, concentrate on preserving the lead! Dammit!

Team: Ok coach. But what do we do if the other team scores on a meaningless shot and ties the game?

Fan Coach: You're kidding me, right? That's not in the game plan! Dammit!!! And that shot is no longer meaningless. It went in the net so it is now a very meaningful SOG. Tied the damm game up because you guys weren't in preservation mode. But, if that actually happens, which it probably won't, because I've done my homework, we'll deal with it at that time. Hockey is a very predictable game, not a game of lucky bounces, or puck luck if you will. Trust me. K?
AND, just so you know… I have taught the UNH TV viewing fan base how to recognize which team is winning, or losing the game, in the third period… WITHOUT KNOWING THE SCORE... AND... WITH THE VOLUME OFF! It's all in the way you play the game and it absolutely shows up on the tube, even without volume. So be careful. You can't get anything by me, or the fan base anymore.
One more thing!... there will be a quiz on the SOG stats of the 2000-2001 Boston College Eagles. One of the greatest Hockey East teams to ever lace 'em up. ;)
So, good luck out there tonight boys. Go Cats! Win one for the Dicker!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Oh my FiveHole12...oh my....I wonder just who that "Fan Coach" might be? hmmm...;) Truly amazing. Can't wait for the counter :D (just might be the game plan we need this weekend...minus the other team scoring, of course.)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

That really is a great post, FiveHole12. I'm sure if the intended target hadn't nailed UNH's season to date across the board (before it happened even), they'd probably be mighty sore at you right now. Keep up the good work. :D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

So, given that a BC-UNH weekend game thread is unlikely to be started by a Cats fan, what are our predictions for this coming weekend? I will get crazy and say that the Cats will pick up 1 point with a tie In Durham, with a close loss at Conte, where we do manage to squeak out yet another win in the SOG.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Haha. I thought you might appreciate that Chuck. You're a good sport. :)

Since Fan Coach has "nailed it" on this controversial approach I actually have been advocating for it. Stats don't lie like liars do;)

Then your boys need not show up this weekend. Stats are in BC's favor. We win!!! :p

Using that term 'frustrated' seems that's what the Eagles seem to be experiencing at the moment so maybe our 'Cats find it in them to split the weekend...but don't tell e.cat :). Come to play Wildcats!!

I'm predicting a UNH sweep!! The only way for UNH to pull this off is for UNH to be very selective with SOGs. They must limit their shots and be very discerning in that process. How they execute that strategy is where Fan Coach comes in. I'm sure he will enlighten us in future ASK THE FAN COACH sessions;)

OK, that's simple...
UNH averages 32.9 SOG/game and 2.50 goals/game. That's a goal every 13.16 shots.
BC averages 30.1 SOG/game and 2.93 goals/game. That's a goal every 10.27 shots.

So the UNH game plan would be to reduce its SOG to 27 SOG? According to the stats, that results in 2 goals for UNH. So now you will use the saved energy from shooting the puck 6 times and pour all that pent up energy into the D? OK. So all you have to do is to reduce BC's SOG by only 10 SOG and, VIOLA, they score only 2 goals. Tie Game! Brilliant!
But... good luck with that game plan.

Stats have 20/20 vision... on past performance. Not so much on future endeavors. There's this little pest each and every game called an opponent. They have skates and carry sticks and try to disrupt every little thing you do. Your stats can be broken in 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 50 minutes. But trust me, more often than not, they are broken. For, or against, doesn't matter, they are usually broken. Tomorrow's stats will reflect that change.

I prefer my team just play better than yours. I don't care how many SOG we have... 10 or 45... as long as we outplay you. The law of averages says we win most of the time when we outplay the opponent. I'll take that.

Please stick around? Your posts will be the some of the most enjoyable aspects of our season if we don't turn things around fast.

I am looking forward to seeing my first games in over a month, always fun to watch vs. BC, getting an in person view of the trending debacle that is our season.

Sounds way too rational to me. But, should be a good weekend, without any blow outs like UNH game at Tsongas.

Glanced at the Maine thread lately?

Can't wait until next week, to see which fanbase can set the bar lower prior to the first series of the season

"... The Road from Alfond to Boston"

Where are they going in Boston and what are they doing when they arrive?

YES more Fan Coach posts please and thank you! Darius I look forward to reading your impressions of the team...here's hoping we see a few in the W column soon. I'm still feeling good about the team because I'm giving them a pass of sorts due to the youth factor etc. Would like to see more from a few of our veterans..
Last year we were very frustrated (there's that word again) because even with the talent
we had it was basically a .500 season. The HE wins were awesome tho!

SOG's or not we at least know what our cards are Still...I'm not driving to Durham and points unknown for nothin' 😉. Taking it to the bank e.cat for that sweep!

Hmmm think it has something to do with a National Championship but I could be wrong. Having perused that board they had big expectations of their new coach but they've been hit with some adversity (welcome to our world) and things haven't panned out like maybe some of them planned. Still the season is not over for any of us so here's to good things! Looking forward to playing Maine weekend after next btw...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Saw both BC and UNH the last two weekends...I think UNH is a more dangerous team on offense.

Absolutely! Unless of course UNH outshoots BC!
