UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I guess I still would like to see something akin to a "Northern Beanpot" emerge from this at some point. Seems like a pipe dream to some degree, especially given that the concept was given a run-out in the late '90's with the long-forgotten "Governor's Cup" series between UML, UNH, UVM and UMaine. I think that was based in Lowell, shortly after Tsongas Arena first opened? The problem then as now is that 3 of the 4 would-be participants (IF we were to substitute Dartmouth for Lowell in a Manchester-based event) would still be Hockey East teams, with UVM's subsequent HE migration. Plus the lack of proximity of the schools - one of the great things about the Boston event - really cuts against the heavy student participation, even if there are some rivalries in that group.
Agree that the only way you're going to save this is to bring more teams in, but it also means renting the building longer (an extra day if it's a tournament) and splitting the gate another two ways. My picks would be Lowell and Merrimack as both are about 40 minutes from the Verizon Wireless Arena. We've also got more non-conference games to play with now.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Playing mighty Dartmouth this past weekend dropped UNH to No. 2 in Div 1, behind Colgate (in SOS, of course).

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Right after the game, SOS was actually 3. It was back to 2 after the rest of the results from the night rolled in.

So... is a split too much to hope for this weekend? Union obviously comes in with pretty numbers. Looking at the season thus far, one wonders if they are the Q from a few seasons ago, building a strong record with soft competition, fading down the stretch. That has NOT been their track record the past two season. Their SOS is 27, and I only see 4 "good" wins in there. On the flip side, I could argue UNH only has two good wins.

About time for Hokey-dad to check in and promise us a thrashing at the hands of Vecchione (whose 5-8-13 is quite respectable, and a shade better than Kelleher's 2-8-10).

And speaking of Kelleher, has he done anything since being pulled off Downing's line? Seems like he's gone pretty quiet.

A split has to be seen by UNH as a bare minimum requirement this weekend. I'd like to see at least a 3 point weekend to really start to build some momentum and confidence, as a return to the HE regular season schedule is right around the corner. Splits will not get this team into the NCAA's. Hope the team plays with the necessary urgency and focus, and comes out the other side with two wins.

Completely agree, just not convinced that this particular four game streak proves much. This weekend is an opportunity to make a real statement.

Chuck and Co would have to agree that a 3 point weekend would be awesome against this formidable opponent! Dutchman on the Union board has a decent post comparing the two teams FWIW dept. UNh can't afford a soft first period against these guys...we were in a trend of scoring the first goal but not lately which obviously hasn't been that big of deal with 4 straight wins. That being said gotta come out swinging. As per Kelleher love to see a breakout game (like UMass). A great test for us we have the guns if we come to play! Go 'Cats!

Union maybe without defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and center Mike Vecchione for this weekend.

The status of Dutchmen freshman center Mike Vecchione remains questionable. He missed the weekend games against Quinnipiac and Princeton with what Bennett described as a “full-body injury.”

Bennett said Vecchione is highly questionable. Vecchione, who has won a team-best 55 percent of his faceoffs this season, had committed to play at UNH before changing his mind.

Over on the Union thread DUTCHMAN put up some interesting stats on UNH. UNH is only 10th in SOG. Whats up with that? But UNH 2nd in SOS:)

Isn't "interesting stats" one of those oxymoron thingies, at least as far as hockey goes??

Keep pushing these silly SOG and SOS discussions e.cat, and before you know it you will be SOL. ;)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

How far has UNH fallen ... to the point where its fanbase would be "overjoyed" at the prospect of splitting a two-games-at-home series against another mediocre .500 team that's apparently struggled to split a similar two-games-at-home series against mightly Bentley.

Hey, you said it.
