UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Everyone has their opinion which is great but I don't see how stopping support of the program can be a good thing. It takes a huge effort to repair a program if it slips badly. I don't think we want to travel down that risky road. Nothing is perfect but I say support the program and these athletes. Enjoy the great level of D1 hockey and hope we can someday get it done. Those things happen when you least expect it.

I was told by a Michigan State fan who sold me an extra ticket to the FF in Buffalo that our Cats would get their hardware when the Sox won another WS. So, here we are, three Sox WS later.

If you support the Friends of UNH Hockey the money goes directly to the hockey program. Please don't stop supporting!

It's no secret me and my fam are 'newbies' when it comes to supporting the hockey team. I do know of the past glory days, 'lively snively' as my sister went to UNH in the 70's, etc... We went to our first game in many years last March when they played Maine and it was the start of a great thing for us! We have been to most of the home games this season (not to mention the Regionals of last year) and plan on attending most of the rest of the home games in the second half. Maybe season tix holders next season. It's about the players on the ice and their hard work that makes it awesome for us and the many fans who do support THEM. Agreed that 'nothing is perfect' and a loyal fan knows that. Quite honestly the games I've attended may not have all been sell outs but have well attended by enthusiastic fans! Hope that continues through the second half as the boys have their work cut out for them. Go 'Cats! Happy holidays to all...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

With some down time over the weekend during halftime of the UNH-SE LA quarterfinal FCS playoff game, I checked out some details on Coach McDonnell's current staff. And I'll tell you, it was an eye-opener. Granted that things are different between the two sports and all, but if you take a look at what they've put together across the street from The Whitt ... I'd suggest you start at the staff that Coach McDonnell has assembled. I think it goes a long way towards answering the basic question as to "Why would anyone want to come to UNH to play football with their sub-HS level facilities?" In summary - lots of relatively young guys, no doubt looking to make a mark in coaching in the future (be it at UNH or elsewhere) being trusted to spread their wings in a program where a few of them played not that long ago. Young, no-doubt ambitious coaches who can talk with their players and establish an immediate connection as older brother/mentor types.

I'll qualify this by saying that there are many different coaching/managing styles out there, and there is no one right way to do things. This is also not necessarily meant to dump on Coach Umile's staffing choices, as there is no doubt that his staff is very experienced and knowledgeable in their own right. But you can't help but wonder if Hockey is missing a trick here, and as pointed out by other posters elsewhere in this thread and beyond, it's interesting to see other very successful HE/D-1 coaches who also embrace younger assistants.

Somewhere out there in cyberspace, I know 'Watcher will appreciate this one ... :D

I know when Chip was at UNH, he was one of the most interesting people to talk to. I had plenty of conversations with him and he was always well liked around the athletic department. Sean on the other hand, was always very surly but he had some great assistants back then that could connect with young people.

And with that being the case, then it's to Coach McDonnell's credit that he could apparently be frank in his self-assessment, and bring in eager, ambitious young assistants to provide the program what he himself could not.

When I see young UNH alums like Patrick Foley (Harvard and now NU), Mike Souza (Brown and now UConn) and Mark White (Brown) all working as assistants at other New England D-1 programs I can't help but think UNH Hockey is missing a great opportunity here ...

CM.. I agree with the sentiment, why not have at least 1 relatively young recent energetic and experienced(ncaa ahl nhl time) alum on staff?

Although I think its been noted a few times here even that UNH would prefer any new head coach to be an experienced head coach. If UNH is going to stick to that, it would naturally push any interested party away from the school to gain the necessary experience first otherwise they would be destined to be an assistant. The three guys you mention seem to be making some good in roads here in the New England area doing the things that might help them walk in one day and be a great immediate fit. Never know!

I don't mean that as a bad thing with Sean. Just a different type of personality.

Brett Pesce is one of the 26 players on Team USA who have made the trip to Sweden in preparation for the World Junior Championship. Three more players will be cut from the team on December 23rd - 1 defenseman and 2 forwards. Between now and then, the team will have practices and pre-tournament games against Sweden and Finland. The tournament officially begins on Dec 26th.

Just here to wish the Wildcats good luck for tonight's game in Fargo. I'm glad it's on TV because I'll be tuning in!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

He11, NDSU could beat the Patriots right now and it wouldn't surprise me!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I don't know about the Patriots, :) but NDSU could definitely beat a large majority of FBS teams. I hate to say it, but whomever they face in the championship game (Towson or Eastern Washington) isn't going to have an ice cube's chance in he11 in beating them.

The future is definitely looking bright for UNH football. A strong nucleus of returning players for next year on both sides of the ball, a promising recruiting class, and some very-long-overdue renovations to Cowell Stadium.

Agree on all accounts except for the Patriots comment;):)

lol I think you are right on that! Good year for their program nonetheless!

Yes they did:)

UNH football success likely to raise money:

http://www.unionleader.com/article/20131222/NEWS04/131229848

"It gives us a great push," Scarano said.

"People who want their sons to get a quality education and play football are attracted to us," Scarano said. "The thing is about UNH, all of us understand the academic mission and integrity of the mission, and we work within it.

"We're never going to compromise that to win championships."
