hoky stalks a select few young boys and also loves everything union...to be expected

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

And, he did rebound tonight; played a great game in net, and should have won.

OK I'll bite. Why "should (he) have won"? I mean, other than UNH seems to have that SOG thingie down cold??

Anyone want to talk about the very basic defensive error (BTW not DeSmith's doing) that led to BC's game-winner?

Nothing fatal this weekend, but nothing terribly assuring about this UNH team's post-seasnn prospects either. Happy Holidays all!! :)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

can anyone tell me that BC was not in control of this game for about 58 of the game's 60 minutes?

* It looks like UNH had 5 power plays, and BC only had 1. Not sure when those came, but obviously it didn't help UNH get the "W" but probably helped boost their SOG's to some degree.

Finally ... further on the issue of "complacency", it was noted in the USCHO game recap (well done BTW) that the game was delayed for a few minutes due to the late arrival of the UNH team bus. Really???  How does that happen? I mean, traffic in and around Boston, shocking, you never see that coming. "Don't worry boys - they can't start the game without us." Putting aside the sarcasm, that's downright embarrassing for a so-called elite D-1 program in the best conference in the country. If those travel demands are too onerous, we can always try to schedule in St. Anselm's and Plymouth State next season.

BC was NOT in control of that game for 58 of the 60 minutes on Friday. They had 1 SOG through the first 14 minutes. Of course it was a goal.

BC did NOT have a single powerplay this weekend.

And I have no idea how UNH couldn't get to BC on time. The weather before the game was fine. Traffic is always terrible, nothing new.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

How did Hill not put that it!? UNH looks great at times but they can't find the back of the net. BC on the other hand. They finish. That's the difference.

Like others have written, UNH needs some finishers. That was not John Muse or Cory Schneider in net for the Eagles this past weekend.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Amen to that! So many opps in the 3rd..hope they find a way to score! At least we got a free tee with the new UNH logo (not thrilled about it but guess we'll get used to it!) Here's to what I hope will be a successful second half to the season..

you obviously know your stuff but , yes, I can tell you BC was NOT in control for 58 of 60 minutes. I actually think UNH carried the play for about 50 of the 60 minutes. Very strange game indeed.................BC did not have a PP in that game (and none last night either BTW) another strange stat this weekend

BC did NOT have a single powerplay this weekend.

* BC had the lead - that's in GOALS, not SOG - for 58 minutes of Friday's game. A majority of that time, they enjoyed a multiple-goal lead in the game. Did I miss the memo somewhere about HE teams earning "style points" in the standings for SOG's?

* As far as the whole "finishing" thing goes ... well, isn't that kind of an important part of the game? "Well, we played a great game, amassed lots of yards and first downs between the 20's, but that 35-16 final score doesn't do our effort justice?"

* If you are a BC defenseman and you have Grayson Downing and Jamie Hill - yes, THE Jamie Hill whose next UNH goal will be the first of his UNH career - bearing down on you on a 2-on-1 ... which of those guys are you going to force to make the play?

* If you are Bret Pesce and have Kevin Hayes bearing down on you on his backhand on the edge of the faceoff circle ... do you want him to stay on the backhand and prevent him from jumping inside you into the slot on his forehand?

* For those who criticize UNH's lack of finishers ... maybe a fair point to some degree, but would you be surprised to find out that UNH is the top scoring team to date in HE league play at 3.30 GPG? Ahead of BC (3.25) and UMaine (3.17) the only other teams above 3.00??

* BC never trailed for a second this weekend. They held the lead for roughly 92 of the 120 minutes overall, AND that's with UNH playing at full strength throughout without a single penalty all weekend long.

Long and short of it ... UNH's effort cannot be faulted, but BC's talent is superior, and BC's tactical awareness (coaching and hockey IQ) is also better than UNH's. Can UNH still earn a top 4 spot and first round home ice in the HE playoffs? Heck yes. They have all six of their games against the top three (BC/Providence/UML) out of the way, and they're already well-positioned to begin with. Unfortuntely, UNH is 1-5-0 against those top 3 HE teams, so getting to the Garden is one thing ... being successful there another thing entirely.

JMHO.

What's strange about that? UNH takes a shot on net after the whistle and BC gets 2 penalties. UNH PP.
Gaudreau beats TvR, going in all alone on breakaway, is hooked to the ice... JG called for embellishment, negating a BC PP.
You can't make this chit up... it's par for the course for BC and Hockey East refs.

I see the stat sheet on UNH and you have 3 guys with 7 or more goals, Goumas, Sorkin, and Downing. BC's team defense has been spotty in games and I think BC just decided to play more defense and keep UNH at bay. So I think you do have finishers, like BC, but BC does not score 5 goals each game or play great defense each game, and they do have 4 losses which includes one to Holy Cross. Every team has games like that where you don't finish.

I'm not quite sure which is LESS shocking ...

* a BC player guilty of diving/embellishment, or
* a HE official "reffing the score"

It's kind of like complaining about how the sun is always rising in the east, no??

On a play like that it looked obvious that JG is tripped on a potential break in and then to say it is embellishment is wrong unless you can see evidence of it. I know there are good acting jobs to sell it but how can you tell on that particular play ??? You can't. Either call it a trip or don't, but don't call both.

I don't necessarily disagree, but it is often the easy way out for officials to match up the penalties if the "sell" is a little too blatant. And if the long-term goal is to try to remove diving/embellishment from college hockey, I'm 100% in favor of that approach. :)

true but this TvR person is pretty freaking good. He would look good on our blue line eh?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

... JG called for embellishment...........

You can't convince me that JG did not want to score. Why would an official think otherwise and enforce a nebulous rule like embellishment to alter the game? Especially on a skilled player like JG.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Great to have the Chestnut Hillbillies visiting out thread this weekend - there's far too little interaction on the USCHO boards these days outside of our comfortable little "silos" - but to clear the decks for UNH content during this final pre-holiday college hockey weekend ...

UNH Unveils New Logo to Rampant Scorn & Indifference

So ... we've got a rare Saturday night with our two girls at home (like the good ol' days!), watching UNH Hockey on Bill Binney TV. Our eldest is a UNH alum now, and our youngest is a UNH undergrad, so while yours truly has never been more than a UNH "subway alum" with lots of gasbag opinions :D now we have 2 family members who are fully invested in the whole UNH experience. During the first intermission, there is this incredibly cloying *ceremony* during which a local radio personality and a student-type take turns shouting into the mic as they unveil the new logo. There are the "let's make some noise" and "on your feet" commands, and the TV camera pans the arena, as the student-type leads the student section in the (new?) "I Believe in U(NH)" chant. It has all the sincerity and tenor of those cheesy infomercials that run on heavy rotation on cable TV at 3:00 a.m.

Back at the WIS Estate in Newfields, we are looking at each other in absolute bemusement. Our eldest flees the room and decides she would rather hang out with her boyfriend and/or re-arrange her sock drawer. Maybe both. Our youngest reminds me we have our own game that kicks off in an hour, and goes upstairs to get ready. It is clear they are both disgusted, and even embarrassed.

Me? I'm hooked, and decide to stick around for a hard-hitting interview with someone carrying the semi-impressive title of "UNH Deputy Athletic Director" (I guess "Deputy" is WAY cooler than just plain old "Assistant"), who goes on to weave the tale of UNH's Fall Sports successes in things like volleyball, lawn darts and ultimate Frisbee (OK maybe that's exaggerated - I think that's a Spring sport?). And of course the exploits of the Football program, and how UNH "hopes to host NHIAA state championship games" at the palace that Cowell *acK* Stadium will soon be transformed into. I mean, with lights AND bleachers on BOTH sidelines even!! Basically putting it on par with high school fields in Portsmouth and Exeter locally. "Deputy" pulls this off while keeping a straight face; I am officially impressed.

Whatever Kool-Aid they are drinking over at Complacency U these days, I've decided I need to get me some of that stuff pronto and in prodigious amounts. Based on the last few days, I suspect it's gonna be a LONG winter up in these here parts ...

Think you pretty much nailed the intermission Chuck....I couldn't stop laughing at that chit show. Who in their right mind comes up with those garbage ideas? Is that your boy Marty? I noticed that deputy dawg AD had no mention of the firing of your womens hockey coach....lol.

Good football show yesterday. Think NH(lol) destiny lies in gridiron, not hockey....

I
I Believe
I Believe in U
blah,blah blah :D

Already I am hooked!!
