Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I hope to see you all at BC on Friday and the Whit this Saturday. I hope this is the last post I ever make and thanks to all that keep us up to date especially C-H-C who has been the best thing that has happened to UNH hockey information in a long time. Thanks Mike for all you do for all of us.

2nd that about CHC, love his post, blog and following him on Twitter, is my main source for info these days

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I hate crashing UNH's thread, but I'll bite... Everything I've ever heard about UCONN's building leads me to believe that they basically built walls around an outdoor rink. Now that could be a gross exaggeration, but with Merrimack and PC doing renovations on their buildings and Notre Dame in a brand new facility, I'm not sure how UCONN will fare in what is probably going to be the worst building in Hockey East. Again, never been there, but if UMASS is struggling in Mullins, UCONN might be screwed.

I suspect it's a gross exaggeration, but my understanding anyway was that UConn's conference home games would be played at the former Hartford Civic Center starting next season, and only the non-conference games would be played on campus. A link to their arena webpage shows a modest facility that's probably comparable to a slightly smaller version of Merrimack's building:

UConn athletics has always been more ambitious than their counterparts at UMass-Amherst, so I like their chances of eclipsing UMA in relatively short order. I chalk up this season as the anticipated transition period - new coach, last year in the old conference, etc. The lure of a new Hockey East program in their home state may convince some kids to stick around, and from what I can see, this is a source that neither Yale nor Quinnipiac has really focused on in recent years.

Not saying they will be atop Hockey East anytime soon, but it won't take too long to be at least trading punches with UMass-Amherst.

If I have these questions, I should probably be on the UCONN thread. Ah, well...
I was wondering if they were going to upgrade Freitas before the move, but if they're playing at the XL Center (splitting time with the Wolf Pack and the occasional UCONN bouncy ball game) that would solve that problem.
I would like PC to not be the first Hockey East opponent UCONN plays at home. Gillies or no Gillies.

Not even a little bit of an exaggeration. That is exactly what it is. They tacked on a locker room, lobby, restroom, and snack bar area as there is nothing resembling a concourse, because the rink literally started as an outdoor sheet that was then enclosed.

Correcto.

You mean, kinda like the original Batchelder Rink/Snively Arena when it was enclosed back in 1965-ish? UNH survived it; no reason to look down on UConn going through a similar progression on a sport that's long been a secondary one in their overall athletics program.

What happened with Coach McCloskey??? No hints of anything over on the Women's Forum either. Any details, anyone?? Hate to be cynical here, but after 20 or so years with an impeccable reputation, I have to wonder if the program's downturn in the last 4-5 seasons made this action today a little more *convenient* for administration to pull the trigger?

Just pointing out that the description is no exaggeration. What IS amusing is that the UConn webpage on the rink used to (and may still) describe it as "state of the art."

Funny thing though, the first time we went down for a women's game, we couldn't find one person campus who could tell us where the rink was.

As I said over there, my reading of the article and Zoofer's comment was that he may have roughly grabbed a player in anger on the bench. Just a guess though.

I must say that my first thought was that this just may have been a convenient excuse, as the last few years are truly unprecedented in team history. Prior, they had never had a season under .500.

That said, if that was the issue, administration had more than enough ammo to make a move due to on ice results alone. Kay was fired for far less in terms of performance, although I have heard that there were other issues with that situation as well.

Without seeing any more details than what's being released, seems like a wrongful termination to me.

I thought that as well....that Scarano was waiting for "just the right reason" to can him. I really hope that the team can move forward after what's transpired today.

This is NOT a sexual offense. It is poor choice of discipline on the bench if anything.

Player made a gaffe that led to a goal and was verbally made aware of Coach McCloskey's displeasure when she got back to the bench. The player was disrespectful, responding with a profanity laced tirade, which led to her being sat down and set straight on the heirarchy on the team and bench.

Unfortunately, the physical act of sitting someone down and waggin a finger at them for being disrespectful (apparently a frequent habit of this player) qualifies as "inappropriate contact."

If that's what happened, then what a BS move by Scarano.

Umile had better watch himself the next time he gives one of his players "the stink-eye".

This may well not have been entirely (or at all) Scarano's decision. With HR involved in the "inquiry" they are usually the ones that lead it so that it can appear "objective" if questions were raised down the road. UNH legal counsel was also involved. I think the ball may have been largely taken out of Marty's court with this one.
