UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

This may well not have been entirely (or at all) Scarano's decision. With HR involved in the "inquiry" they are usually the ones that lead it so that it can appear "objective" if questions were raised down the road. UNH legal counsel was also involved. I think the ball may have been largely taken out of Marty's court with this one.

That has a certain ring of truth to it. I've seen other instances in the private sector where once HR gets involved, things accelerate quickly and oftentimes the results are harsher than anyone would ordinarily expect. One would think in academia, it might even be worse.

Right or wrong ... you gotta think it's going to be a tough road to hoe from here on out for the player in question with the remaining staff, as well as with her teammates. Would be interesting at least to know if the process was initiated by said player, persons close to the player, or was originated independently by the program or a neutral observer.

As I understand it there is policy/protocol that dictates a report must be made by staff if an incident takes place. The report was made and things moved from there. Of note, the player was in the line-up and saw action the next day.

where is everybody? that wasn't a 6-2 game. in fact, i thought UNH easily could have had six themselves. came away very impressed with your speed, puck movement/possession and your dmen at the offensive blue line. i know you guys have had an argument about shots on goal, but the Cats really did dominate for a few different stretches in this game.

Casey DeSmith is an enigma, wrapped in a.......

And, Chuck Murray is spot on that SOG are absolutely meaningless.

But, I think that the Cats will split for weekend.

based on what i saw tonight, if i had to bet, my money would be on UNH tomorrow as well.

Absolutely the SOG stat didn't even begin to reflect that game last night obviously! The Eagles took advantage of every Wildcat gaffe on the ice last night...period. Bring it tonight 'Cats!

Still not convinced that SOG are "meaningless". As I've said before, "they are what they are". At one point during the game Dan Parkhurst mentioned that UNH had no SOG on one of their PP's. That tells me that that BC executed their PK pretty well because UNH has a decent PP. If BC only has 21 SOG and DeSmith gives up 6 goals, that's meaningful:eek:

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

All of BCs goals were on high percentage shots created by their speed.

Why do you say DeSmith is an enigma? By any objective standard (i.e. statistics) he is a middle of the road goaltender in Hockey East. The fact that he got lit up by BC again this year (gave up 5 goals on 17 shots down there last year and got pulled in favor of Wyer just like he did last night,) demonstrates to me that he is performing true to form. Can't play bottom dwellers like CC and UMA every night.

UNH fans have been spoiled by superior netminding over the past decade and a half. But just because a guy is wearing goalie pads and a UNH jersey doesn't automatically make him the reincarnation of Ty Conklin.

That said, I expect DeSmith to rebound with a strong game tonight at home, just like he did last year.

OK, one more time on our favorite topic this season - shots on goal. Let's look more closely ...

* BC scores the opening goal in the first minute of the game. It's a fair assumption that most of UNH's shots would have come in the 19 minutes that followed. So, again - what is more important, playing with a lead OR just amassing SOG's?

* UNH ties it up early in the second period, and then BC takes the lead (for good) less than a minute later, expanding their margin out to 5-1 by the end of the period. Concepts like "possession" and SOG's aside ... can anyone tell me that BC was not in control of this game for about 58 of the game's 60 minutes? Did the 3rd period SOG's mean anything at all, other than keeping the stat man busy?

* It looks like UNH had 5 power plays, and BC only had 1. Not sure when those came, but obviously it didn't help UNH get the "W" but probably helped boost their SOG's to some degree.

Before touching on the tactical implications ... maybe we should give BC some credit for being extremely opportunistic (as UNH should expect fast, highly-skilled opponents to be, I suppose), and allot some scorn for UNH not being ready to match up against a top notch opponent. This happened last year too (5-2 @ BC), and IIRC UNH bounced back the following evening up at Durham (2-1 @ UNH). So I'm in agreement with those who say that tonight's game could turn out completely differently (I sure hope it does anyway).

For what it's worth ... in both of last season's meetings, UNH outshot BC by fairly wide margins. Do you think that just *maybe* some of UNH's more talented opponents are coached to play a certain way to exploit perceived weaknesses in UNH's transition play? I know what I think (and have thought for some time now), but I'd be interested in getting everyone else's thoughts.

Finally ... further on the issue of "complacency", it was noted in the USCHO game recap (well done BTW) that the game was delayed for a few minutes due to the late arrival of the UNH team bus. Really???  How does that happen? I mean, traffic in and around Boston, shocking, you never see that coming. "Don't worry boys - they can't start the game without us." Putting aside the sarcasm, that's downright embarrassing for a so-called elite D-1 program in the best conference in the country. If those travel demands are too onerous, we can always try to schedule in St. Anselm's and Plymouth State next season.

Overall, a tough last 24-48 hours for ALL aspects of the UNH hockey program (Men's and Women's). Hopefully football gets it right. :)

DeSmith gave up 5 goals on 17 shots. Then Wyer gave up 1 goal on 4 shots.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Excerpt from UNH Wildcats Facebook page:

"Hey Fans! If you can't make it to [today's] hockey game vs. Boston College, go to the Thirsty Moose in Portsmouth, the Official Watch Party Headquarters for UNH Athletics. Wear UNH gear and get 10% off whenever the Wildcats are on TV! http://ow.ly/i/3Mx68"

No longer in NH, but would be pretty cool to have a "UNH bar" in Portsmouth.

And, he did rebound tonight; played a great game in net, and should have won. So, I stand by "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" (sorry that I did not provide the complete Winston Churchill quote earlier).
