Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

You may be right on that last bit, Felger. I try to be optimistic, but every time I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, it turns out to be an oncoming freight train. But without any real "burden of expectations" on UNH this postseason - you know, other than actually competing in and winning some games with hardware on the line - maybe they will rise to the occasion. Dare to dream, eh?

Anyway, this morning's cruise through the media turned up this *fascinating* item at Seacoastonline.com, an interview with "legendary UNH hockey coach" Dick Umile, sharing his secrets of success ...

There are some interesting nuggets in there - I'm still grappling with the visual of Coach Umile listening to tapes of Tony Robbins - but the one I think some of our long-time regulars on here might find most interesting are his answers to the questions about motivating his players. Maybe it's me, but he seems pretty passive in his answers there. Surprising? Not really, to me at least. Thoughts (other than why Coach decided right now would be a good time to get into this?)??

I kind of like this part of the article .... Umile: "Once you give clear expectations, you have to make changes if they don't meet those expectations".

Kind of reminds me of the quote from George Lichtenberg (who?) .... "I cannot say whether things will get better if we change; what I can say is they must change if they are to get better."

Looking at expectations that have existed during the last 10 years might lead to the assumption that change is on the horizon .....

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

BC in 2 - don't pick against BC this time of year
Lowell in 3 - Lowell is the better team, but VT just beat them once and is a solid road team
Providence in 2 - they just beat ME twice and ME is a poor road team
UNH in 3 - no result will be shocking, the 'cats beat them 2X, NU looks lousy recently. A hot goalie or a player breaking out offensively could be the difference.

BC over UNH - see above
UML over Providence - exciting, close, UML has just a bit more

BC over UML- see above

Just a little something I cooked up...based on the "Night Before Christmas" :)

It’s Hockey East game day and all through the ‘Whitt

They’re preparing the place for ‘Cat Fans to sit

All through our House one thing was clear

It wouldn’t be long til the Huskies were here!

Coach Umile woke with a start

Knowing his team must play with heart

So he called on his boys to take to the ice

Going to the Garden would surely be nice!

Lead us Captains Trevor, Eric and Jeff,

We look up to you, no time is left!

On Kevin, on Grayson, on Tyler, Mattie and Nick!

Skate hard to the net, and do it real quick!

On Jeff, on Casey, on Kyle, on Mattias and Dan!

No time to waste; no shots to fan!

On Brett, on Justin, on Harry and Dylan!

We’re counting on you, will you be willin?

Bring it Jay, Jamie, Ryan, Collin and Maxim,

We wanna send those Huskies a packin’!

Casey DeSmith, won’t you stand on your head?

Without you our season would surely be dead!

Here we go Wildcats, make us real proud

And in return, we promise to be loud!

Show those Huskies who’s the boss…right from the start

Come on Wildcats, play with your heart!

Pretty good Ref. It looks and feels like Christmas out there these days:)

Here's a little Christmas Cheer for ya;)

Does anybody else find it curious that exactly one varsity sport carries a "sports psychologist" on staff?

Given:
1. UNH men's hockey has a less than stellar reputation for late/post-season performance in the past dozen years or so; and,
2. the coach is "legendary" and clearly not the problem;

Then: How does Churchard remain employed?

I'm sure he's a perfectly nice gentlemen with his UNH credentials - played for "Whoop" Snively after all - and his liberal arts and education degrees. But it doesn't appear he actually has psychology credentials, nor any obvious positive impact. More evidence of accountability I fear.

I would change "dozen years or so" to "past ten years," as we had nice post-season runs in 2002 and 2003, but not so pretty in 2004-2013.

But, does Churchard get paid anything for his work with the team?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Perhaps not. As a former player he may just enjoy being with the program.

Couldnt find the real story, and instead got redirected to the "Funny or Die" and a fictitiously ironic interview with Coach Umile.

related videos:

(1) Jimmy Carter, the power to influence people and instill confidence
(2) Donald Trump, self-awareness and hair care
(3) Don Shula, knowing when to call it quits
(4) Jerry Rubin, Never trust anyone over the age of 30, with a foreword by Coach Umile, never trust anyone under age 55.

(5) the keys to making it to 25 year silver anniversary -- subtitle, learning how to survive on $225,000 per year.

2. I do not believe he gets paid.
3. He is a friend of Dick Umile.

Ouch. Those are gonna leave a mark :D ... anyway, here's to hoping his team "shows up" this weekend.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

His title on the UNH website is "sports psychology"

That is why it is listed as "sports psychology" and not "sports psychologist" .....

One can be a student of the field of "sports psychology" and claim to be knowledgeable in that area..... however, one cannot call oneself a "psychologist" without .... in most cases a License as a Psychologist issued by the State.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Tim Churchard graduated with a liberal arts degree in 1967; no mention of major. He lived in a cabin behind Whoop's house on Edgewood Road after dropping out for a year. Three of my best friends in high school were neighbors of the Snively's, so got to know Whoop a bit; he was a really nice guy. Churchard then picked up a couple of grad degrees from Salem State and UNH in education and business. No mention of psychology with those degrees either. He teaches as adjunct in the UNH business school, and initiated the Whoop Snively Citizenship Award in 2009, which was awarded to Justin Agosta last season. Thanks, Google.

Listening to this one on the radio in the wilds of northern New Hampshire. Band sounds good on the radio. Go Cats!

Listen Bill, I don't want to get into a back and forth about this like it is something worthwhile such as Shots on Goal.

But his bio on the website says "Title: Sports Psychology." I noticed at the time it said "Psychology" not "Psychologist." (Even though I graduated from UNH I can read.) However, since you're comprehension skills are apparently a bit lacking, I will point out to you that the words "Student of" are also not on there. It only says "Sports Psychology." It doesn't say "Student of Sports Psychology" just as the goaltending coach doesn't say "Student of Goaltending," and just as Colin Shank's bio doesn't say "Student of Hockey Operations." If you want to split hairs and parse language I can do the same.

I'm well aware that Tim Churchard is not a licensed psychologist. This rant has nothing to do with him. I actually tried to add his Organizational Behavior class once when I was a student. I've heard nothing but good things about him as a teacher and he has always been a pleasant man on the rare occasions when we've spoken. But it is also clear that his bio identifies his responsibilities with the hockey team. And it ain't teaching business principles.

Now why don't you and Hillary go back to figuring out what the definition of "is" is.

EDIT: He is clearly identified as the team's "Sport Psychologist" in the media guide:

Those blinding golden helmets scored seven unanswered goals against the eagles. Should be an interesting quarters moving into Sarurday.
