A bit apprehensive about posting something so personal on this thread, but thought some of you may like to know...

Bill Munroe (Stinky)... #12... '69-72...played on same line with Umile and Frigon....44-69-113 pts.

Thanks for posting, Czarry. Stinky Monroe played with more heart than any UNH player that I can remember. I recall one win over BU during the 1971-1972 season in which he played PK 5-3 for nearly two full minutes holding off the Terriers, who only managed a couple weak shots on net during that PP. Stinky was the player that we all toasted at the Down Under Pub after the game that night. Best wishes to him on his latest challenge.

I have some pretty good memories of Monroe myself. He was the son of the Wellesely High hockey coach so I would be that was one reason Charlie Holt liked him. Slight of build, he could skate pretty fast and he was an excellent complement to Umile on I guess what would be called an energy line today. Not a prolific scorer, he was tenacious on the forecheck and an ultimate team player. I know he and Umile are close. When Monroe's daughter was at UNH, probably 10-15 years ago, he made up to more than a few games, then after she graduated, he still kept coming when he could with a couple of his buddies. Only had a couple of chats with him but seemed pretty humble about his time at UNH. One think that struck me in those years was how he plodded through some obvious physical ailments - hip, back, knee. I knew he had had heart problems but from what is described it is pretty serious now. Hope for the best for him.

Actually, Billy's daughter, Ashley, graduated in 2006. Billy didn't miss a game for her 4 years and a couple after that...Travelled on the road to many as well.
He and Umile were the complements on that line to Louie Frigon (top 5 alltime greats, IMO), and yes Billy could skate like the wind....had a sniff with the Oakland Seals (white skates) til he blew out his knee.....Billy had commited to BC, but when Umile decided on UNH, Billy switched canoes....He and Richard were very, very, close. Before each game, Munroe would not go out on the ice unless he could pull Umile right behind him.....both were very superstitious...
...Billy came out of surgery last night (10 hours) and is doing well...he will have a long, tough recovery....He still bleeds blue and white............

If there are any sites out there to help him directly (financially or otherwise) please post them here. I love the CaringBridge site but would like to help them directly if possible....good luck Billy! Once a WildCat, always a Wildcat!

What are our "keys to the game" tonight? What a slug fest last night was...here's what I'm a thinkin':

1. Stay out of the box. We got super lucky last night NU didn't capitalize on these chances. OR...our D just played out of their mind.
2. Speaking of the D...continue that awesome work. Best game ever in that regard.
3. Offensively keep up those odd man rushes...and score on them.
4. Level heads...don't play down to their frustration. Albeit this has to be a tough thing to do...let us fans be out of our minds ;)
5. Lastly, win baby, win! :D

Bring it 'Cats!!

That's a very nice thought Hockey Ref....Billy and the family are pretty sound financially, so that's not an issue....but your kind thoughts are wonderful and I will personally relay them to the family...

Thoughts and prayers out to all the Munroe's. I am struck by the words of his wife. The love and devotion in her words come through what she wrote so eloquently. He is a lucky man in a lot of ways to have such support.

e.cat....those are words from one of his daughters...although Billy's wife (ex) could have (and would have, had Ashley not) written the same...

Oops my bad Czarry. Wow, what a great daughter and man can she put pen to paper. He must be a great dad too. Thanks for the clarification.

I can't claim to have seen the game last night, but I did hear most of it on the radio on the way home. NU sounds like a very frustrated bunch that has been going downhill since their hard-luck loss in the Beanpot finals. Teams like that have a way of self-destructing if you give them a chance to do so. My key from the UNH standpoint would be to play a highly disciplined game, keep things tight in the neutral zone, and if those odd-man rushes keep presenting themselves, UNH will eventually take advantage.

OR UNH will get too passive, mail it in, and give life to a down-and-out opponent.

Don't let this go to a Game 3, 'Cats.

Good post. A couple of thoughts:

1. The officials did not have their finest games last night. The calls probably evened out, but hopefully the officials are better tonight.

2. The D playing time was as evenly distributed as it has been all year. Not only did Cleland and Maller play solid regular shifts, but they did so while paired together. Quast continued his solid play.

3. Not being able to finish is frustrating. Perhaps we don't have the sniper talent of years past, but the effort was there last night. There were a handful of "shoot the puck" opportunites.

4. Always, but unless the officials control the game it could get ugly especially if NU is down a couple of goals. If we are patient perhaps Madigan's melt down frustration will carry over to his players and tonight we have the PP advantage.

Go 'cats!

Welp as per the #1 on your list, you know the old saying "where there's Hockey East officials";) Actually in reading a few of the boards this morning there were are few complaints about that very thing but these came from more teams who lost. (Which is normal / expected). That being said...here's hoping!

Off to the 'Whitt...enjoy the game wherever you are and let's END this tonight 'Cats!!!! Bring It 'Cats!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Carry, thanks for the post on Billy M! I'm sure ur at the game tonight...the boys look good and on their edges...I stayed home to watch some of the women's Elite 8 online streaming....amazed at how empty the Whitt is for the game, student break or not....when will someone there take note of how the program has fallen off the last decade? Michigan and Notre Dame were NOT sell outs this year....unheard of in years past!
But on the positive, Cats just went up 4-2 on Agosta's bomb!

3 min later, its 4-4, pathetic.giving up a goal with 7 sec.typical

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

This has been extremely frustrating. Completely opposite from yesterday. The offense has figured out how to put the puck in the net. But the defense just can't clear the puck from out front of the net. Too many scrims out front leading to dirty goals for NU. That call for the penalty shot was pretty weak. But gotta move past it and win this period boys!!!
