UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

In honor of Gordie Clark being named to the ECAC 50th Anniversary Team,
and in recognition of the beginnings of UNH's Playoff Quest many years ago,
I have posted a video of Gordie Clark, Jamie Hislop and Cliff Cox scoring 3 goals in 1 minute and 45 seconds in the 1974 ECAC Quarterfinals against RPI:

Wow. Thanks for sharing this C-H-C. Those guys were special and the crowd was really into it per usual:)

I was a kid in the 70's, and going to the games was simply awesome!

Second to none, by far the loudest event I had ever been too, even louder than going to bruins, Canadian playoff games at the garden. As a kid I would literally cover my ears when unh scored.

Great video - loved the 3 on 3 action for that last goal...at least I think thats what it looked like. I have bunch of videos of games from the early 90's that I need to transfer on the web...seeing Snively always brings back a flood of memories. Thanks for sharing

Definitely Jeanotte, any idea who the other dude is? His voice sounds familiar too. That was an awesome video, CHC, thanks for sharing! Those must have been amazing days to be at an amazing rink!

2 Club Seats together for tomorrow's semifinals. I have four, but only using 2. Email me through here if interested. Face Value. (Yes I know there is a ticket forum, but I've been here for years and look at D1 Board a lot more than Ticket board)

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Thompson named one of 3 Hockey East Hobey finalists (with Atkinson and Nyquist)
Kessel was also first team, Sislo and DiGi were all star honorable mentions...

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Congratulations to Blake Kessel on being selected Hockey East 1st-Team All-Star.
This is a particularly noteworthy honor because some suspect he has been playing with a right-leg injury throughout most of the season.

I was a student at BU then (1972-76) and remember attending a couple of games at Snively. The place was wild - a lot of fun. I wish the BU crowd were into it like that, but I realize it's just a different world in the city. In any event, thanks - it was great to watch that - gave me chills! And...now that I've gotten over last weekend's debacle vs NU, good luck to the Wildcats this weekend. I hope you go all the way!

BU had some great teams back in the day too. I worked with Mike Eruzione's sister at Dean Witter in Boston in 1980!! She was very proud of him as we all were:)

I'll take a win tonight over Merrimack but thanks for the well wishes. Good luck next year.

Thanks! We don't realize how much it means until we're not there!

Yes, it looks like BC may "see" UNH in Manchvegas, and I hope that we get to play you there, too. Looks like UNH may just barely hold onto their 3 seed, which will save BC a trip to St. Louis.

Edit: whoops, I just ran a bunch of scenarios on the pwr predictor that has UNH dropping to a 4-seed, so looks like maybe St. Louis for BC. And, according to Priceless, if all the favorites win on Saturday night, the Manchvegas regional would have UNH facing Miami in game 1 and Merrimack facing Western Michigan in game 2 next Friday night.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I guess it goes without saying - a discouraging end to the semifinal game. The third goal just killed UNH. With DiGi making the initial save and then he and 2 defenseman protecting the net, it's amazing the puck went in. I think it bounced off one of the UNH guys. Oh well. UNH had several quality shots on goal in the second and third period but just couldn't get it past Cannata. A little surprising given how shaky he looked on the first several shots on goal in the first period.

The Moses-Borisenok-Goumas played terrific - again. I overheard an NU fan sitting behind me say at one point "They should take the first line off and put the Moses line out there." I thought the Thompson-DeSimone-Sislo line played above average but not great. They got there chances against the Da Costa line without success (understatement).

Near the end of the game, the Merrimack crowd was chanting "We Want BC!" Maybe ought to be careful what you wish for.

The only silver lining - and it is admittedly pretty thin - is that UNH got to prepare for the NCAA Regionals playing an actual game against a competitive team. That's better than the last two seasons when they only got an intersquad scrimmage in during the off week. Here's hoping that the planets align and UNH makes it into the upcoming dance in Manchester. I'd like to see this group of seniors play one more time.

PS - Really enjoyed meeting "goblue". Showed me a picture of his 2-year-old grandson in a UNH jersey - 2028 UNH Recruit.;)

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Anyone seriously down on UNH's overall performance tonight is out of their mind. The difference in the game was the shorthanded goal, Sislo is probably getting a lot of the blame but it all goes back earlier to Thompson who made a horrible flip pass back to the blue line when UNH first had possession in the offensive zone. Otherwise I think the Cats played well to the strengths of their personnel against a Merrimack team that has proven itself strong from top to bottom in their lineup.

Canatta is the real deal. I was front row behind him in the 1st and 3rd periods. There were a couple stretches in both of those periods when he singlehandedly saved the game, with the help of a few golden chances put barely wide. In the moment he can make his results look almost pedestrian because his goal tending style uses minimal movement, the total opposite of how DiGi protects his net.

Sislo, Thompson, and DeSimone showed later in the third period they can still generate more potential scoring chances from nothing than any other line, but up and down the ice the 'Moses' line was everywhere throughout the night. I started having flashbacks to the old Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs plays every position on the baseball team.

My two quick thoughts about the future for this team beyond next weekend.... Silengo has a bright future, always focused and working hard. Something needs to be done to help setup Henrion's shot... so maybe that does not speak well of Silengo. Not sure what the answer is but as we all saw during the middle stretch of this season Henrion is a sniper in waiting.
