UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Just boarded my plane in Minneapolis, which had just arrived from Denver loaded up with the Pioneer hockey team, readying themselves for the wcha final 6. I razzed them a bit about our 'cats getting it done this year. Nice guys. As I spend half my life out here, it's really something to watch minnesotans come alive this time of year, what with televised high school hockey tourneys and the final 6.

I only hope it's a flight from manchvegas unloading in a few weeks. And I hope the outcome is better than the last visit. But maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

seems like you guys get this every year huh? excellent:)

I actually think this could be an important factor in the game. UNH is averaging 10 minutes in penalties per game, best in the league, while Merrimack is averaging 24, worst in the league. I know that majors and misconducts can skew these numbers but, even so, this is a decided advantage for UNH. Since the two teams PP are very close, I can see this being the difference in the game.

The other thing that struck me when reading the HE stats is how DiGirolamo tops Cannata in every stat - gaa, save percentage, total saves and, of course, wins. The differences aren't great, but when you combine it with the penalty stats, I think it is enough. Prediction, if UNH scores 4, they win.

In honor of Gordie Clark being named to the ECAC 50th Anniversary Team,
and in recognition of the beginnings of UNH's Playoff Quest many years ago,
I have posted a video of Gordie Clark, Jamie Hislop and Cliff Cox scoring 3 goals in 1 minute and 45 seconds in the 1974 ECAC Quarterfinals against RPI:

That was awesome. Wish there were more older videos around for us younger folks who never got to see some of the goings on in the 70s and 80s. As a Merrimack fan, I'd love to have a video of the 78 D2 Champ team or the 80s run to the NCAAs against NU and LSSU. Heck, I've been a HE fan since 1993, but I often think to myself how much I'd love to see videos of some of the great games I saw of the 90s and early 00s.

Thanks for posting. I miss that old barn, but I know UNH hockey would not be where it is with out the Whitt. My very first clear memory was riding on my father shoulders in the Garden 1979 and just remember my father beaming (we are now both UNH grads). I have many childhood memories of that old barn.

For those who didn't get the joy of Snively there is a reason it was called lively Snively. There were times it felt like the entire building would move. I have never experienced something that felt so alive and so loud, not concerts, drag races, or sporting events. The 99 Maine weekend had the energy but the sound gets muffled by the Whitt, it just bounced around old Snively. Something lost in the Whitt is no bleachers, the croud would get stomping and it would sound like a train rumbling through the building. People would be everywhere in the building for a big game, I am sure fire code went out the window on a regular basis. As a kid I remember the hot dogs were good too, my father and I watching a game and getting a dog to eat. I still have a stack (15 or so) pucks I collected for warm ups, games, or given to me by players as the came off the ice.

I hear the Savostano brothers have been sighted at recent Merrimack games. They'd be the ones to ask about the old videos. My VCR chewed up our copy of the '88 highlight tape a long time ago. I'd be awesome to have that on YouTube.

Awesome!

Was that Dick Osborne? Whatever happened...oh, right. ;)

Nice to see the cowbell in effect even back then. Anyone know how far back that goes?

How are their head-to-head numbers? Pretty sure Cannata wins that comparison.

It was deafening when they scored and the chants, oh my god
Honestly, I think the biggest difference between then and now is the design of the building. The Whitt doesn't hold noise the way the old barn-style rinks did. I've been in the student section for most of the time the Whitt's been open, and I can tell you that it can be deafening in there. I've left games with my ears ringing (and before I played the cowbell). The chants and cheers, however, don't carry very far. Also, I have to imagine that the proportions were different. The student section looks large in all of the photos and videos I've seen, with a higher student-to-townie ratio. So, the students back then could have actually made less noise (not saying they did), but it would have sounded louder to the rest of the arena, which, I have to think helped get the regular fans to cheer more (not to mention the fact that I have to imagine walking into Snively as a non-student, you felt like you were in their home; at the Whitt, I have to imagine the season ticket holders feel the opposite).

My wife and I just watched the video. We were both at the game. "Thanks for the Memories" .......... Maybe this clip could take the place of the "pep talk" a few weeks ago by Belichek to one of our opponents.

Me too. Like something out of an episode of "Quantum Leap," I can actually see the 21-year-old edition of myself to the right of the UNH bench in the front row - complete with long hair and an old, fatigue-green parka with the bright orange lining.

Sure works for me. :)

Man, I had forgotten that. Wow -- it still brings goosebumps, seeing Snively, the crowd, and the masterful skating and passing of that line. They were special.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

No, I'm pretty sure that was Jim Jeannotte. (spelling?)
I believe you're correct. He was the play-by-play guy for Channel 11, NHPTV for many years. I don't remember who the color guy was on that 1974 broadcast but if you look closely, you'll see the guy who eventually replaced him - a much younger and lighter version of Bob Norton manning the gate on the UNH bench. After Norton left his assistant coaching position, he became the color guy for Channel 11 broadcasts.
