UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I am attempting not to b!t@h about UNH. Just pointing out what I see. I go to all the games and have no intentions of stopping anytime soon. The trick is not to get shocked; it is what it is at this point. What makes UNH get in the NCAAs each year is the same thing that is the problem - coaching. I keep pointing out that things could be and have been much worse, I remember those years.

I am sort of looking forward to this weekend. I will enjoy another UNH game. I just wish the regional had a less CCHA vs. HE challenge and more of a national feel. But these are the current bracketing rules.

UNH might surprise, as of late they play better without the pressure of being a favorite. The less people think they will do anything the better they play. I started a post earlier and never finished. I don't think they are playing lazy (without effort) but I do think it is tentative hockey (so it looks lazy). They are afraid to get out of position, hence no hitting. When less has been expected the last couple tournaments they play a loose game, beating Cornell and UND (pushing BU to the edge). Once they were a big favorite against RIT they tightened up.

Right on the money JB. I think they play better as an underdog as well, largely because when they are the favorite that MONKEY ON THEIR BACK gets quite a bit larger. The monkey is getting larger every year though and short of winning it all, won't stop getting bigger. Of course at some point you have to win under pressure in order to go all the way but for now that's not a concern. Just leave it all on the ice UNH and forget about the monkey.

Some sad news to report - UNH alum and long-time UNH sports fan retired Col. Richard Burkholder passed away on Saturday, March 19:

His son, Richard Jr. posts regularily on these boards ("Snively"). Our condolences and prayers to Richard Jr. and the Burkholder family during this difficult time. :(

Jesus, that is one hell of an American right there.

Snively, condolences from the BC contingent.

Absolutely...obviously a great man. Condolences from the BU community as well. I've been there...I lost my Dad a few years ago...I owe so much to him and still think about him every day. After the painful memories fade away, you will be left with only the good ones.

I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times. My father is in the same rotary club and I go with to hear different speakers couple times a year. I didn't know all that Col. Burkholder had done, I knew he had been in the military and a proud veteran, but like 99% of sevice members he was humble about what he had done.

Snively, my condolences on what I am sure is a tough loss.

My condolences to Snively.

In response to the whining, in no way am I saying that UNH WILL win, but I am going to the game Saturday fully expecting them to win. Either way I am going to have a good time and enjoy some of the best college hockey in the nation.

RIP Colonel, wow, that's quite a military record. Condolences to the family. Brings hockey into perspective

Sorry for your loss Snively, its men like your father that have made our country great.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Well lets see.

I believe MC is the far and away better team. I don't believe they are more (raw) talented. I believe they are far more discplined, they have more heart, and have a much higher hockey IQ.

I actually have come to believe UNH's problem is the regular season not the playoffs... strange but true.

See this teams 1st line has been picking up bad habits since the year turned 2011. It started with DeSimone tha Sislo. I think they both came back from break thinking they were better than they are. They stopped working as hard, stopped back checking (yes they did that at one time this year), stopped moving their feet, started taking bad penalties, etc. That eventually affect Thompson as you see his decline later than the other two. If I can see it from my seat they coaches should be able to see it too.

What have the coaches done. Those 3 started basically every game together. Those three get the lions share of ice time and PP time. They are rewarded for there play. Could have started to fix the problem by starting lines that were working, then cutting playing time and if it didn't get through a healthy scratch. Words work on some issue but if they aren't being consitently corrected on the ice, ice time gets the point across.

Then their is depth. How many shifts did the 4th line get Friday - more than 5? If by March you don't have confidence in your forth line to play a share of the shifts you haven't done your development job all year. They should be able to go out there and skate hard, mentally prepared not to be a total liability. But if you are focused on winning lots of regular season games you short shift those guys and they never develop. Without that depth you have a gassed team in the 3rd against solid competition, which also happened Friday.

During the regular season you try stuff out. Develop a bag of tricks. Different power play looks, different forechecks, different ways of breaking out of zone, methods of beating a trap etc. Well UNH is predictable they forecheck the same, power play the same, break out the same, panic and throw the puck around the boards the same, they can't dump and chase effectively the same, therefore the results are the same.

The power play is linked to one coach, Borek, although Umile should have fixed it by now. When Borek arrived the power play got much worse. The UNH power play problem is simple. It is always the same, 5 guys standing around the outside. If there is a guy screening a goalie - a raity at best - they don't shoot the puck.

Years and years of the same leads to the one constant... the coach. So UNH is what it is, Umile will leave when he wants and not before. Maybe we will get lucky with a new assistant that has different perspective but i don't think so. I am no longer shocked or disappointed, it just is, on the other hand at least we aren't living ground hog day of the mid 80's over and over. Before you wish for a change, look at those years, it could be much worse. Just realize what UNH now is, and hope Umile leaves before the cupboard is bare like it was after Holt. The disappointment happens to people who let it happen.

Saw Union Coach Nate Leaman on the NCAA selection show talk about Union’s power play, the top one in the country. We stated, they have 10 guys who can handle the puck and one sniper on each unit…..10 guys….NOT 5.....this give options. He stated they been working with the same guys all season. Their power play is at 40 % . Has UNH had a second unit???...

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Forget all the standard pre game cliches Cats and just show up to ready play Saturday. Walk the walk boys.

The Sr's and Jr's know what they need to do. The fact is, despite the last 4-5wks, UNH is again in a field of 16 with a chance to win.

Focus on playing their game- which Miami's style should actually help to do, come out flying, & and burry those chances boys!
Go get'em!

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

My sincere condolences also to Richard Burkholder, Jr. (Snively). I just became acquainted with Richard this past month, through reminiscing on various threads, notably the UNH-UVM HE quarters thread, as it turns out that we were both Durham townies (Snively was three years behind me at Oyster River High). When I chose my screen name a few years ago, it never occurred to me that part of my screen name might already be taken. But, Snively was gracious in not insisting that I change my name, and we only learned one another’s real names through the recent thread reminiscing. So, hope that the Cats can win some more games this season for “Snively Sr.”, and my mom, who also passed away this past month and was a season-ticket holder in Lively Snively.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

This page from UNHWildcats.com includes a ton of data comparing the 2010-11 team with past UNH teams and other league teams:
http://unh.prestosports.com/sports/mice/2010-11/releases/201103223i8rsi

One comparison which caught my eye was the regular season stats of this year's team and the 2007-08 team (which dominated the regular season and earned a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament). Statistically, those two teams are fairly comparable. Let's hope the current team advances farther than the 07-08 Wildcats.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

For all the reasons that have been stated, most effectively by JB, a couple friends and diehard fans who I have been going to the games with for years are seriously starting to discuss giving up their season tickets. It is just so disappointing. Year after year, the fast start, the good play pre-Christmas, the decline toward mediocrity in the second half, and the inexplicable failures in Boston and the NCAA; after awhile you begin to lose belief that we will ever return to those few golden years when we made the final game and had a chance to win the whole thing.

I certainly hope we do something this weekend (somehow, hope springs eternal).

We've only been season ticket holders for three years, but we probably won't renew next year. Why bother, when Marty $carano and the rest of the ticket department got an extra $250 or so out of me? You know how many games I paid full price for at $24 a pop (so, $48) and then had friends purchase tickets for $11 and sit with us? In this economy, perhaps UNH would learn that 4,000 seats at $15 is the same as 2400 seats at $24 (give or take). And then you have more noise and more concession sales . . .

As for the postseason, I am pumped for Saturday. All I want is for UNH to play their hardest and best and see what happens.
