UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Overall, UNH did well this week - the two points from BU were huge, and we knew going into Northeastern that it would be one of the toughest games remaining. The early 2012 success punctuated by a reminder of the distance to travel to bridge the gap separating this team from the top, hopefully the girls will keep having fun, keep working, and pleasantly surprise themselves and us game after game.

Let's hope for another good showing by the Wildcats when they take on the Catamounts in Burlington on Sunday at 2 pm - free video feed from the UVM athletics website. Here's the link to the Saturday game highlights in Durham. Go Cats!

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Kristina Lavoie (Fonthill, Ontario), a junior forward on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named the Athletic Republic co-Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.

It is the second time in three weeks Lavoie has been honored as the league's Player of the Week. She was previously honored Jan. 16. Lavoie shares this week's accolade with Kerrin Sperry of Boston University.

Lavoie factored in four of UNH's five goals last week with three goals and an assist as the Wildcats split a home-and-home series against the University of Vermont. She recorded her first career hat trick with three goals in a 4-2 victory Jan. 28 at the Whittemore Center. Lavoie scored the first two goals of the game – at 3:23 and 19:08 of the first period – as well as the tally that gave UNH a 4-0 lead at 6:00 of the second stanza. The next day at UVM's Gutterson Fieldhouse, she set up the goal that gave UNH a 1-0 lead with 48 seconds remaining in the first period.

Lavoie leads the team in goals (11) and points (24) and is tied atop the leaderboard in assists (13). She also has a team-high 87 shots. In 93 career games, Lavoie has amassed 38 goals and 35 assists for 73 points; she is UNH's active leader in both goals and points, and is second in assists.

New Hampshire (10-15-3 overall, 4-9-2 Hockey East) returns to action Feb. 4 at home against Boston University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

UNH seems to have played some of their best hockey since the break and have made improvements. I watched the webcast from Vermont and they looked a little 'off' after the 4-2 win the day before and seemed to lack a consistent offensive threat in one end and defensive stability in the other.

Question: Not knowing the recruits coming in next year from Minnesota, will they offer some decent 'punch' in both ends of the rink and add strength to this young, developing line-up?

Sunday's game at Vermont was certainly not the 'Cats best effort. Strange that Saturday's pace seemed slow, and for much of the second and third periods, it was a pretty lackluster (boring) game.
Sunday's pace was much better, but unfortunately, UNH was not up to it. Vermont won the battles and foot races, and that cost UNH the game, and two points they really needed to take. The playoffs are still within reach, but when you don't win the ones you should, you lose control of your own destiny. The Wildcats have to take some points from tougher teams now, and hope that U Conn and Vermont do not. That said, our schedule is a bit softer than theirs.

I haven't seen them play, but the Minnesota people say they can play. Crossley on the blue line should be a good, and hopefully quick contributor. The forwards have proven that they can put the puck in the net at the H.S. level, but it's always wait and see when it comes to making the transition to college speed and systems.

There is a good, and very young core returning, so the future does look bright.

Yeah - I know that. And goes to school in a place other than Minny. I was referring to her as a part of next year's class. Shoulda been more specific, or less general:p

After watching UNH at Gophers in November, the 4 MN recruits(including Shattuck D) should be able to contribute their first year. This yrs' MN DI class will be smaller than last yrs but the upper end talent is very good. Both forwards are in the top tier of their class and move the puck well and are natural scorers. The two defenders see the ice very well ,move puck with velocity, and are physical. AC Wood has been watching them since he was at MN and in comparison lets say Gophers & Badgers recruiting classes it's a good core group. The question always is will they continue to develop but I know it was a real coup for UNH to get those four players to go east and not stay in the WCHA. Providence also got some good players out of this yrs class as it looks like the majority of MN players are opting to go east this year.

Well the three HS players coming in are 3 of the 10 finalists for Ms. Hockey this year.
