UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Wildcats rally with two goals in the third period and an OT PP game winner for a 3-2 decision over the Dutchwomen.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

I agree D2D that the Minnesota trip wan't a total washout given the team now knows what it means to be a team....the Maine game we had lead skates on and looked pathetic, but with the Princeton win and tonight's never say die "tude' it seems they did take away some lessons......down 2 going into the 3rd, and they win in OT....must say though that the Union goalie made some nice saves to keep it scoreless......we'll see what we picked up out west as we now have the home and home vs Northeastern....need those conference points so badly.....cheers and well done you Wildcats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Well in watching the Wildcats skate today in their comeback tie vs. the Huskies, I have to say that they impressed even me....after watching the game Northeastern played against BU the other night, I thought that they would skate around the Wildcats, almost like the Gophers did, but they stood them up coming into their zone, and actually had times where they controlled play in the offensive zone, so I guess our little Minnesota trip DID leave a mark......now as Scarlett so aptly said, "tomorrow is another day"

Yesterday's game was predictably more wide open. Although UNH again outshot the opponent, albeit by just one, grade A's were far and few between. A stomach bug ran through the team all week, and I think the second game bore witness to that. Excuses aside, Northeastern is a very fast, and quick team with a formidable first line of Esposito - Coyne - Pickett, all of whom are sharpshooters, and they showed it. Speed keeps coming with NU's second line, so there's not much opportunity to capitalize on weakness. UNH was disciplined - only 2 penalties, with a perfect PK. 1 for 5 on the PP, and the conversion was on a three man advantage. It would be a game-changer if they could have gone 3/5 on the PP.

The Huskies' last goal occurred as a result of some (IMHO) lackadaisical puck handling with Minton pulled for the extra attacker. Minton played solidly in both games this weekend.

All in all, despite the score, I think the team played a good two game set. Certainly not good enough, but they came away from Saturday's game at home knowing they could / should have won after they responded to a two goal hole with three unanswered goals. The things that are causing them to give up goals are correctable; they just need to focus and bear down. Quickly!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Three Man advantage. How does that work ?.

ARM is correct. When NU was whistled for two quick infractions, giving UNH the two man advantage, Coach Mac elected to pull Minton for a skater as well. Paid dividends then, but when he pulled her after the faceoff for the 6 on 4, it cost them.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

Agree with DC here - Minton played well this weekend, including a game-saving stoning of the potent Husky attack in Game 1 at the Whitt in OT when the Cats had a poor line change and gave up a 2 on 0 rush halfway through OT. NU's top line of Pickett-Coyne-Esposito is extremely tough to match up against with their speed...Coyne has to be the quickest in Hockey East...she has the Lawler/Stack type of 5th gear that most players can't match. UNH had some good looks on the power play numerous times throughout Game 2 but Schelling is tough...nothing comes easy with her in net. UNH came close to making it a 3-1 game halfway through the 3rd - and then NU got the deflating goal as Falino stepped out of the penalty box and got the homerun pass to send her in all alone on a breakaway. The small confines of Matthews hurt Hunt's chances of uncorking her wicked slappah on the PP - not enough time/space on that sheet. But I liked UNH's team spirit - they kept fighting 'til the end on Sunday. Here's hoping the Cats take it to the Ivies on Friday/Sunday and finish the 1st half on the upswing. Darty is coming off a two week break so hopefully they'll be shaking off some rust. Mork and Farris had excellent weekends - we'll need more of that next half. Can't wait for the return of Hannah the Enforcer to add some spunk to the offense and create some chaos on the forecheck :) Get well soon and Go Cats!

Lascelle named WHEA Rookie of the Week

Lascelle named WHEA Rookie of the Week

#17 JENNA LASCELLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE
(Freshman Forward; Cornwall, Ont.)
Recorded her first career multiple-goal game with a hat trick against Dartmouth. Her even-strength goals gave the'Cats leads of 1-0 and 3-2, and her tally on a penalty shot tied the game, 4-4, early in the second period. Lascelle scored on her only three shots of the game and finished with an even rating in both of last week's games.

Congrats to Jenna! The Penalty Shot may sound like a gimme, but it's a big pressure shot, particularly when the team is down by a goal, and she didn't falter. Greats JOB!:D

Lascelle scored on her only three shots of the game ...
Clearly, she needs to shoot more!

Her even-strength goals gave the'Cats leads of 1-0 and 3-2, and her tally on a penalty shot tied the game, 4-4, early in the second period.
So she completed her hat trick on a penalty shot that tied the game in the second period -- why does that sound familiar? Sorry, I'll leave now. :o

Seriously, I agree, congrats to Ms. Lascelle.

Re: Women's Ice Hockey Team Raises $2200 at CelebratePink 5K Road Race & Walk

It may be trivial and petty but with the Wildcats sweeping UConn this weekend, cheez if the sun doesn't seem a little bit brighter today! It's funny how good a bunch of 18-21 year old girls can have such a meaningful effect. Aside from our military, when do we ever notice the accomplishments, and hard work that today's youth offer? Obviously I have no kids of my own, but at work with many 20- somethings, every spare minute they have is spent on their Iphone or Blackberry! Not that most of the students today do the same thing on their bus rides but the point is to remember to keep things in context....while I might want UNH to rule the ice year in, year out, life happens and student athletes will be kids.....so when we've been struggling as of late, and through no fault of their own, the team has had to live up to a rich program history, **** if it doesn't feel good to see all their hard work start to pay off....no UConn isn't Minnesota, but their play has been better, so now with a few bounces we'll see if we can't keep making strides...we''l done Wildcats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

I've been following the team throughout the year on various sites and blogs. The team is young and inexperienced which should allow for better years ahead. I watched them play at BC early in the week and although out-classed in some situations they were tenacious, enthusiastic, and seemed to have good speed and received solid goaltending. They lacked the polish/refinement and overall skill and maturity of the BC squad but I was impressed nonetheless. I would like to think that the team has turned a corner.... it was nice to see the group rewarded with a couple wins for sure!

I agree with you and Zoofer. This was a good weekend for us as fans, family, former players, and most of all, our Wildcats. As we transition from, and back to a team in contention, I am so proud and happy that as a group we understand the game enough, and have faith and confidence in our Athletic Department and coaching staff, that we can let the team work through the process and learn from the mistakes.

After seeing some of the other threads, I am so happy to be able to come home to Wildcat Nation.

Minton, Moses: Service Credit Union Student-Athlete Spotlight & Wildcat Weekly Roundup

SERVICE CREDIT UNION STUDENT-ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT & WILDCAT WEEKLY ROUNDUP

January 16, 2012

DURHAM, N.H. – Lindsey Minton (Richardson, Texas) of the women’s ice hockey team and Steve Moses (Leominster, Mass.) of the men’s hockey team are featured in this week's Service Credit Union Student-Athlete Spotlight. This information and more can be found in the Wildcat Weekly Roundup.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Lindsey Minton, women’s ice hockey

Lindsey, a senior goaltender from Richardson, Texas, went 2-1-0 last week with a 1.67 goals-against-average, .940 save percentage and one shutout; she held the opponents’ power play scoreless on 10 opportunities. She opened the week Jan. 10 with a career-high 39-save effort at fourth-ranked Boston College (4-2 loss), then backboned UNH to a two-game sweep of UConn (1-0 and 5-1 victories).

Lindsey recorded her first shutout of the season – eighth of her career – with 15 saves in the 1-0 win vs. UConn at the Whittemore Center on Friday, Jan. 13. She followed that with a 24-save effort that lifted the Wildcats out of last place to a tie for sixth place in the Hockey East standings.

The senior netminder tallied double-digit saves all three periods, including 15 in the scoreless first period, during the 39-save performance at BC. Her previous season high of 30 saves was also at BC (Oct. 15, 2011) and Lindsey’s previous career best of 37 saves was also against BC (Nov. 28, 2010).

In 10 games (eight starts) this season, Lindsey is 3-4-1 with a 3.21 GAA and .889 save percentage. In seven Hockey East league games, her statistics include a 2.4-1 record, .304 GAA and .898 save percentage. Lindsey’s other season highlights include a 26-save effort Dec. 3, 2011 against 10th-ranked Northeastern University; she entered that game at the start of the second period with UNH trailing 2-1, but helped backbone the Wildcats to a 3-3 tie.

Lindsey has a 32-19-3 overall record in 59 career games (55 starts) with a 2.05 GAA and .912 save percentage. As a junior in 2011, she went 8-10-0 with a 1.84 GAA, .926 save percentage and four shutouts. One year earlier, Lindsey had an 11-5-2 record with a .908 save percentage and two shutouts. As a freshman in 2009, she was unbeaten (10-0-0) with a 1.72 GAA, .916 save percentage and one shutout; she was honored as UNH’s Rookie of the Year.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2011 - 2012

.....and it continues! Just got in from watching UNH skate past BU,4-2! Minton provided some great stops when the team needed and the team slowly built up their confidence after falling behind 1-0......as the second started, UNH came out with pressure and slowly took the momentum from BU....IMHO after UNH went up 2-1, BU started to hang their heads a bit, as I believe they were fighting the puck.....after their series with Maine, I think they feel like the bounces are going against them, so even though a PP goal tied it up, UNH kept up the pressure and took the game! The team that played tonight has come a long way from October.....so proud of their grit and fight and hustle......brilliant Ladies!

I think at this point for BU, it's just as much a psychological thing as it is missing key players. Need some leaders to step up and right the ship. No confidence right now- might've just hit rock bottom with this loss. Good win for UNH though.
