Re: UNH Recruits: 2012-2016

Jordan Masters has always been (since he committed in the summer of 2011), and continues to be, on target to enroll at UNH in the Fall of 2013. Those who have followed the blog will remember that last winter, Masters was chosen for the USHL/NHL Prospects Game. Since this summer, Masters has been sidetracked with nagging injuries that have kept him out of the Jersey Hitmen's lineup. When injuries keep a teenage player off the ice for extended periods of time, by definition, the progress is interrupted.

C-H-C,

Assuming Masters is still coming to Durham - any chance due to injury he defers and McNicholas takes his spot in the 2013 freshman class?

Very good question Dan. There's probably no simple answer at this early point in the season. Masters is chomping at the bit to get his career back on track with the Hitmen. If he stays healthy, we'll see if he regains his offensive touch. Meanwhile, McNicholas has done really well since he joined the Nanaimo Clippers. A good argument could be made that McNicholas' development was being held back a bit with the Lumberjacks last season.

I'm going to assume that the UNH coaches are tracking both player's progress and will have to decide next spring/summer whether to bring in one or the other or both. The coaches have apparently been up front with each player about specific, progress objectives and the target dates for enrollment. In interviews with the blog, both players said they were going to work their hardest to meet the goals set up by the coaches as soon as they can.

One minor factor which may come into play is right-shot vs. left-shot. Kelleher and Poturalski, who are almost certainly ready to make the jump to the NCAA next fall, are both right shots. Masters is also a righty and McNicholas is a lefty. The current squad is a little lopsided in favor of left shots at forward and will be losing three right-handers (Henrion, Block, Pavelski) and one left-hander (Burke) to graduation.

Another potential factor is years of experience in junior hockey. This is McNicholas' second season in juniors and Masters' third. Whatever happens next season, both players have the potential to be solid contributors to UNH.

BVR commits to UNH as per tweets from all three brothers.

A dynasty of VRs to toss the fish on the ice... (JVR's hook shot last weekend was a hoot!)

Poturalski picked up an assist last night in the Cedar Rapids Roughriders 4-3 win vs Sioux City.

He currently has 3 goals 4 assists in 9 games played.

Although his point production has dropped off a bit, he is still on the 1st line power play and takes many of the key faceoffs for Cedar Rapids.

Eiserman should be talked about with regards to accelerating. On twitter today, Kirk Luedeke mentioned that he'd possibly go in the first round if he was draft eligible this year (missed the cutoff by less than a month). Gotta think that he'd have the most potential of any of the big time recruits to bail, so would be smart to get him to school as early as possible. Also, I know each case is different, but UNH has failed miserably with Cushing kids lately, and this would be a tough one to lose.

I read that today too. That'd be great if they could get him on campus next year. I think the injury filled seasons for Poturalski and Masters, would leave UNH room to push one of them back ethically. No need to bring in 4 freshmen at F next year - we gotta break up the log jam.

The only impediment to having Shane Eiserman come to UNH in the fall of 2013 is that he is currently a junior in high school. He would have to rapidly accelerate his graduation from high school in order to come to Durham for the 2013-14 season. Although Eiserman played a year at Cushing last season, he is now a solid NTDP guy. He is still very committed to coming to UNH.

Next season, there will be a new junior hockey league in the Northeast:
http://www.bostonjuniorbruins.com/usphl-formed/
The US Premier Hockey League is designed to be on the same competitive level as the USHL and NAHL. The USPHL will include teams from the Junior Bruins, Middlesex Islanders, Jersey Hitmen and South Shore Kings. The top players from the Eastern Junior Hockey League are expected to move up to the new league.
U.S. Hockey Report has many more details.
