UNH Recruits: 2012-2014

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

Regarding Saponari, the story out there, and written about on this forum, was that he was suspended for violating team rules (drinking), then blew off a meeting with Parker and some athletic department staff. That was enough for Parker. I was beyond surprised that BC jumped on him, considering St. Jerry's reputation. I would highly doubt UNH would be interested, especially after the Dries situation.

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

In this article from New England Hockey Journal, Mike Vecchione discusses his plans to come to UNH. In it he says:
"I felt UNH would be the best fit for me, but I don't see myself going up there next year," Vecchione said. "Coach Umile was straightforward with me. He told me he'd like to see me get bigger, stronger and faster, and asked me if I'd be willing to do an extra year in the USHL."

Last May, Vecchione was drafted by the Tri-City Storm, the USHL team based in Kearny, Nebraska.

Heisenberg's site also lists a commit for either '11 or '12 from LD Ryan Randall of the Monarchs.

Congrats to Ryan, a Durham native and former Oyster River Bobcat! He was moved from forward to d when he joined the Monarchs last year. Heisenberg's site lists him as "2011 or 2012," so my guess is he'll be on campus this fall after Kessel signs.

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

Posted this on the BC and BU recruiting threads, but figured UNH fans would be interested. Vecchionne had a hattrick and added a few assists last night:

If anyone lives on the north shore, Malden Catholic plays St. Mary's in the Division I final of the Saugus Christmas tournament at 7 tonight. Fitzgerald is a BC recruit while Vecchione is a UNH recruit. MC has several other kids who will be going D1. Several Hockey East head coaches along with assistants were in attendance last night for MC's 18-0 victory over St. Bernard's. St. Mary's was a winner over Austin Prep in overtime, a team that has been competitive and produced several D1 players over the last decade, sending kids to BU, UMass, Merrimack and RPI.

High school hockey is no where near as good as it used to be, but this tournament is always good. In the Division II portion of the tourney, host Saugus plays Lynnfield in that division's final. Lynnfield and Saugus High have both produced D1 players in the last decade or so. Higgins, Gordon, Flynn, Maresco, Ferullo, Petersen all played 1-4 years at Lynnfield or Saugus before transferring to prep schools. Neither team is as good as once was, but tournament is always fun and competitive. One of Lynnfield's top players is Kris Houda, a sophomore who is the son of Bruins assistant Doug Houda.

Are we assuming Kessel is gone at the end of the season btw? That is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the Randall commitment this late.

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

Looks like Randall fills the hole Laleggia created when he decide to go elsewhere.
Joey Laleggia is a unique talent - a small defenseman who is a prolific scorer at the junior level (39 GP, 18-36-54. ) He would appear to be a Brad Flaishans/Brett Kostolansky type defenseman with more potential as a scorer. Denver is very fortunate to have him.

It looks like UNH is hoping to get offensive output from bigger defensemen:
Trevor van Riemsdyk - 6'2"
Ryan Randall - 6'0"
Brett Pesce - 6'1"

I should have been clearer. I was not intending the implication that they were on the same talent level as players (I don't know either but based on their performance numbers and my understanding of the level of play I would rather Laleggia). I was looking more at roster slots/holes.

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

2012 recruit Mike Vecchione scored the game-winning goal against St. John's Prep to keep Malden Catholic undefeated. However, they had to forfeit an earlier win against Weymouth High School because of playing an ineligible player. Malden Catholic is now 6-1-0.

Re: UNH Recruits - 2011 & 2012

Cody Campbell and the Niagara University Purple Eagles play a weekend series in Worcester against Holy Cross. Will Campbell see his first NCAA action? He paid his dues for 2 and 1/2 seasons in the USHL and deserves an opportunity to play at the Division 1 level.

Campbell is in net for Niagara. They are shorthanded at goal. Freshman Carsen Chubak is out for the year with an injury after it seemed he was going to settle in as the starter. Another goalie is off the roster, Andrew Hare, and the only other goalie is junior Chris Noonan. Campbell has done well so far late in the third Niagara on top 5-2 and Campbell with 33 saves so far. If he does well he could settle in as the starter the rest of the season.
