Trevor van Riemsdyk, Ryan Randall, and the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs have advanced to the Championship Round in the Eastern Junior Hockey League. They defeated Kyle Smith and the Jr. Bruins 3-2 this afternoon. TvR and Randall played solid defensively but did not figure in the scoring.

This was my first opportunity to see center Kyle Smith play. His tall, lanky stature and skating style is reminiscent of Jeff Silengo. Smith scored the Jr. Bruins second goal to tie the game early in the third period. With about 10 seconds left in the game, Smith dug the puck out from behind the Monarch's net and made a nice centering feed in front of goalie Brian Billett. The puck bounced around and hit a couple of sticks but did not go in. Smith, who is an Assistant Captain, was effective at faceoffs and passes the puck well. He also played on the point during the Jr. Bruins' powerplay. His season and, presumably, his junior career ended as he is scheduled to enroll at UNH next fall.

2011 Recruit, Matt Willows and the Jersey Hitmen defeated the Bay State Breakers today to win their semifinal series and advance to the Championship Round of the EJHL.

Willows scored a shorthanded goal (the eventual game-winner) and two assists.

The two-game Championship series between the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs and the Jersey Hitmen is on March 19th and 20th in Wayne, NJ. If each team wins a game, a 20-minute minigame will determine the Champion.

After missing Games 3 thru 6 in the BCHL Semifinals with an upper body injury, 2011 Recruit Grayson Downing, returned to the lineup for Game 7. Unfortunately, the Vernon Vipers defeated the Westside Warriors 2-1, ending Westside's season and, in all likelihood, Grayson Downing's junior career:

As the article points out, Downing plans to enroll at UNH next fall.

Grayson Downing had an outstanding regular season in the British Columbia Hockey League. Despite missing 4 games while playing for Team Canada in the World Junior A Challenge and 4 other games due to injury, Downing accomplished the following BCHL rankings:
~ 7th in Goals
~ 12th in Scoring
~ 4th in Powerplay Goals
~ 2nd in Shorthanded Goals
Many UNH fans are looking forward to watching Downing play for UNH next season.

So with Camper's concussion problems, what does that mean for his scholarship? Does UNH need to look for a new forward?
My vote would be to bring in Dan Correale this fall - doesn't appear to need much more development in the AJHL, and he's old.

My vote would be to bring in Dan Correale this fall - doesn't appear to need much more development in the AJHL, and he's old.

It's fun to speculate on which recruits will come to Durham next fall and it's a welcome distraction from the Hockey East/NCAA playoff discussions.

One way to approach it is to look at the skill sets of the departing seniors (and early departures) and to try to replace each one with a recruit. This isn't a perfect model because the incoming freshman won't simply plug into the vacated spots on the first/second lines or defensive pairings next year. But if the goal is to have them playing like the graduating class by the time they are seniors, then this analysis makes sense. Here's how it might look:

Paul Thompson is replaced by Grayson Downing - Downing is a 6-foot, high-scoring forward who excels on the powerplay and penalty kill. Downing would appear to have as much potential star power as Thompson did when he came to UNH.

Phil DeSimone is replaced by Kyle Smith - Smith is an assist specialist, solid on faceoffs, and can score some goals. DeSimone was one of the USHL's elite players when he came to UNH and Smith's accomplishments in the EJHL may not be as impressive (based on the assumption that the USHL is superior to the EJHL). However, the skill set of the two players are similar.

Mike Sislo is replaced by Matt Willows - Willows isn't as tall as Sislo but he is the high-scoring Captain of his team and the leader of the Hitmen's powerplay.

Greg Manz is replaced by Jamie Hill or Jay Camper - Either Hill or Camper appear to have more potential than Manz but each have question marks. Camper is struggling with recurrent concussions and Hill has an excessive amount of penalty minutes.

Blake Kessel is replaced by Trevor van Riemsdyk - TvR does it all. He's solid in the defensive end, primarily because of his stickwork and skating ability. Offensively, he does what Kessel has done - plays the pivotal point position on the powerplay, can carry the puck from the defensive end through the neutral zone and to the net, passes crisply and accurately, and puts up a lot of points.

Matt Campanale is replaced by Ryan Randall - As a converted forward, Randall is more similar to Kostolansky, Kapstad, and Flaishans than Campanale. His skating and stickwork make him very difficult to beat one-on-one in the defensive zone - like Campanale.

Mike Beck is replaced by Eric Chevrier - Chevrier is a shutdown, physical defenseman. He is shorter than Beck but maybe tougher. His physical play and stature is more similar to a Robbie Barker or Chris Murray. He's not a huge offensive threat but he passes the puck very well out of the defensive zone.

Casey DeSmith comes in to be Matt DiGirolamo's understudy - DiGi was a leading goaltender in the USHL and so is DeSmith.

If this pattern of comings and goings plays out, then UNH would not need Dan Correale to enroll next fall. However, with the ever-present risks involved in the enrollment process, it's reassuring to have Correale available if necessary.

Over the 2-game Championship Series, Matt Willows scored 2 goals (including a powerplay goal) and an assist for the Hitmen. Overall, he was the League's Leading Scorer in the playoffs with 5 goals and 7 assists in 8 games. 3 of his goals came on the powerplay and 1 was short-handed.

I would agree that Correale could be the guy in waiting for another yr(only if an unexpected forward bolts could you see him coming in early). I would almost think that Willows was picked up, after they realized Camper had health issues. I just don't see UNH allowing him to risk his health with his apparent history of head injuries. They may honor his scholastic efforts, but ice time I would think is in question, unfortunatley. And, to boot, Willows appears to be a very nice addition!

It will be interesting to track how the growth/development of Geaudreault, Thrush & Vecchione go in the USHL & wherever Vecchione ends up. I think they are hoping Thrush can be the goal scorer of that group. Vecchione, it's tough to tell, until he plays in a more competitive league- but it sounds like he's got some skills!

Anyway- I'm going to go out on a limb- I've never thought that Kessel would leave early. Not necessarliy because of being talent ready for the next step, but I think he very much likes playing for UNH and with him and Moses would be a coulple of excellent co-captains next yr. If he does go, however- I think UNH will fill the whole nicely- I see Hardowa & Kipp gaining confidence in their capabilities, add in Knodel, Chevrier & TvR and you'll have some very solid replacements on the ice.

They defeated Matt Willows and the Jersey Hitmen 3-2.

It very much looks like Willows could be in the mold of Jacob Micflikier, one of my all time favorites & NOT just a filler for Camper. All Willows seems to do is score. No matter what his level of play. His numbers are nothing short of impressive, you might even think his transition to college might be rather quick.

I wonder...After Mike Vecchione savors his team's championship then graduates from Malden Catholic this spring, will he go out to Nebraska to play for the USHL team that drafted him or will he stay closer to home and play for the Jr. Monarchs or Jr. Bruins in the EJHL?

I had almost forgotten about Knodel. And I must admit that I did forget about Justin Agosta, who didn't play at all this year. While the crop of new talent in the next two years is encouraging, I hope that the coaches can figure out the logistics so that we don't have more defections. Despite the fact that Knodel was a draftee and is a big body, he couldn't crack the line up this year (shades of John Doherty). But if the 'Cats do bring in 3 D next year and Kessel stays, we're looking at 9 D (oye!), and more guys riding the pine. And while I was down on Blake at times this year for his Brian Yandle "close your eyes and shoot" plays, he's obviously a solid player...someone that won't be replaced by a Freshman.

And as we all know, despite our offensive loses year after year, we almost always have guys that step up and replace the points. So I guess having too much defense is not a bad thing...especially since the D looks as good as it has in a while (ok, that's not saying much). I guess my point is that I don't want others "pulling a Laleggia" (boy would he have looked good in a blue & white sweater next year).

I think Randall, forward converted to D (this year?) is the swing guy. If Kessel returns Randall gets another year in juniors to refine his game as a D-man.

Knodel is the disappointment for me this year. I am surprised he didn't get some ice time at least in some of the small rinks on away games. The guy that would likely have sat is Beck and you know how Umile is with upper classmen.

I think it was known Agosta was going to sit most of the year and only play if there was an injury disaster. Book on him coming in was he still needed to work on his skating coming from roller hockey.

That is a good question. They will be working on it as we speak. Look for him to land in USHL or BCHL, probably not EJ.

Would be good for him to get away for a year and play for a year at either level. Vernon and Dubuque will be the focus, Tri City is not an option.

do not disparage Knodel. Ask anyone who you may know around the program. He has been outstanding in practice all year. He has been patiently waiting for his turn. You may have noticed that the 6 D and the goalie played every minute of every game ( Digi did get pulled for 2 minutes early in the year.). Knodel gets big respect from his teamates.

Has there been any concrete reports regarding Kessels leg injury? Because Kessel always seemed to kind of glide around on 1 leg during warmups, even in previous seasons. I think its just how he rolls
