Congrats to our Scholar-Athletes

Congrats to our Scholar-Athletes

DURHAM — Hockey East announced Monday that five student-athletes on the UNH women's ice hockey team have been named to the 2009-10 WHEA All-Academic Team and that one of those Wildcats — freshman defenseman Katie Brock — was named a Top Scholar-Athlete.

A student-athlete has to record a minimum 3.0 grade-point-average in both the fall and spring semesters to qualify for the All-Academic Team. From that pool of 68 student-athletes, seven were named to the HEA Academic All-Star Team for having the top GPA by position. And four, including Brock, were named the Top Scholar-Athlete for recording the highest GPA in the 2009-10 academic year.

Junior goaltender Kayley Herman was named to the All-Academic Team for the third time in as many years. Senior forwards Micaela Long, Kelly Paton and Shannon Sisk were all feted for the second time. Long and Paton were also honored last season, whereas Sisk made the 2008 team.

Brock recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters to earn the three honors — All-Academic Team, Academic All-Star Team and Top Scholar-Athlete.

Herman ranked 13th in the nation in goals-against-average (1.88). In 16 games, Herman went 8-4-3 with three shutouts and a .913 save percentage.

Long ranked second in the nation in assists per game (1.15) as well as sixth in points per game (1.55) and 19th in power-play goals (six). She finished the season with 13 goals and 38 assists for 51 points in 33 games played. Long led the team in assists and tied for the lead in points; she also ranked second in plus/minus (+15) and power-play goals (six).

Long's 2010 Hockey East accolades included First Team All-Star, Humboldt Storage and Moving Scoring Champion and two-time Player of the Week; she was also selected to the New England All-Star Team.

Paton ranked sixth in the nation in points per game (1.55) as well as fourth in assists per game (0.97) and 20th in goals per game (0.58); in other statistics, she was 16th in game-winning goals (four) and 19th in power-play goals (six).

The captain led the team in points (51), goals (19) and plus/minus (+16) and tied for the lead in game-winning goals with four. Paton was also second in assists (32) and tied for second in power-play goals (6). Furthermore, she ranked second in shots (128) and fourth in shooting percentage (. 148).

Paton's 2010 accolades included RBK/AHCA All-America First Team, Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top 3 Finalist, New England Player of the Year as well as Hockey East co-Player of the Year, First Team All-Star (unanimous selection), Three Stars Award, three-time Player of the Month and three-time Player of the Week.

Sisk, the team's assistant captain, recorded two goals and two assists for four points in 33 games.

Brock played in 25 of 33 games and logged innumerable minutes on the blue line by playing on both special teams units in addition to even strength situations. She recorded four points, all on assists, and finished with a +5 plus/minus rating that ranked fifth on the team and second among defensemen.

UNH advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive year and finished with an overall record of 19-9-5. The Wildcats were ranked in the top five in the nation 20 of 23 weeks.

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Don't misunderstand me...I too value a complete team. The '01/'02 Pats are one of my favorite teams for that reason.

But the sudden drought in top players may indicate a larger problem. And especially in hockey, an elite player (such as in net) can make an average squad competitive, or put a solid, deep team over the top.

Put another way...where is UNH last year without Kelly Paton?

Micaela Long was also a 50+ point scorer last year, and the two combined for a high percentage of the team's goals. While surely Paton was the driving force and clear leader on the team this year, and Mic stepped up in a big way, we were wondering last year at this time how we were going to move on without Faber, Bellamy, Joyce, and Taylor. Every season we graduate top scorers, we wonder how UNH will get it done without them, but the beauty is, the way the team's development has worked, as each year progresses, the younger players fill bigger roles, and by the time they hit their last year they are ready to fill the big shoes.

From all I've heard from both U of M and UNH people, Jamie Wood is going to make a difference in shaping the roster and getting more high end players in. As I understand it, plans are in place to put player development into an even higher gear as well, so despite next year's forecast being one of "rebuilding", we may be pleasantly surprised with our building blocks. I, for one, expect to be:)

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Any word yet on when the official commitment list will be released? I know that UNH usually releases later than most, but I would think that it would be sometime soon.

Congrats Lauren!

Congrats Lauren!

As a former teammate of hers, I can say without a doubt that this is a well-deserved honor for Ms Apollo.

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire athletic department released the nine names that will be honored at the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony in 2010. The announcement was made today by UNH Director of Athletics Marty Scarano.

The inductees will be honored on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at the Hall of Fame ceremony, which will be held in Lundholm Gymnasium. The event is set to begin at 6 p.m.

This year’s class includes: Lauren Apollo ’86 (women’s ice hockey), Robert Black ’77 (men’s soccer), Marcie Boyer ’03 (field hockey), Kim Boyle Foley ’97 (women’s soccer), Lou D’Alessandro ’61 (football, baseball & lacrosse), Ed Fish ’58 (football), Randy Hall ’90 (cross country, track & field), Kristen Zeimetz Runyan ’02 (women’s swimming & diving) and Joe Bellavance ’62 (football and hockey), who is the winner of the Leitzel Award.
Lauren Apollo ‘86 is one of the highest scoring defensemen in the storied history of the UNH women’s ice hockey program. She recorded 40 goals and 65 assists for a total of 105 points in 80 games. With those numbers, Apollo is the points per game leader among all Wildcat defensemen at 1.31 ppg and is one of six defensemen in the Century Club. She also currently ranks second in goals and tied for fourth on the list of UNH blueliners.
As a senior in the 1985 season, Apollo tied for the team lead in goals (18) and netted a team-high three power-play goals in 21 games. She also ranked third in both points (37) and assists (19) en route to becoming a member of the inaugural ECAC All-Star Team. Apollo also eclipsed 30 points as a junior with 32 in 19 games and averaged more than one point per game as a sophomore with 21 points in 20 games.
In her four years donning the Blue and White sweater, UNH finished as EAIAW champions in 1982 and 1983 and was the ECAC runner-up in both ’84 and ’85. The Wildcats compiled an overall record of 71-9-1 for a .883 winning percentage.

A bunch of older posters are gone or less active, and sk8happy isn't here to provide some pessimism.

Any attempt to discuss the team in less than glowing terms is dismissed.

The official recruit list hasn't been released. The roster hasn't been updated as of the other day. Posts I've made in the last couple years speculating as to lines/ pairings have been meet with silence.

A ton of talent has left the program in recent years to graduation or transfer.

What would you like to talk about?

When is the kickoff, for those of us who haven't been able to make the Friends meetings?

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

I'm just saying that this thread used to be hopping.

The kick off date hasn't been finalized yet. I'll text you and announce it here when it becomes finalized.

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Any ideas as to when the roster and/or a recruiting list will be released? I recall hearing something about a goalie recruit or two that aren't listed in the commitment thread.
