UNH Offseason Thread

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Like I wrote to Coach Durocher earlier this year, I'm personnally ecstatic that finally UNH can start the year without having the bullseye on our back....of course I've passed it on to his Terriers, given his loaded roster, and coming off their best year ever!
I'm glad they and Hockey East have raised the level of competittion...what DC says is true for UNH and every other team...we're just hoping that in the end, the Wildcats can once again find their way to the top, regardless of what the rosters and fact sheets say! forget Marshall...we are UNH! Go Cats!

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

This quote was the sole reason I brought this up in the first place. It is indeed a very slippery slope -- either you focus too much on the offensive side, trying to get the points, and your defense slips or the other way around. Either way, it seems unrealistic for one player to do it all.

Given the fact that UNH has had a several year string of 40+ point scorers, they are in a new situation this year with no returners with this volume.

Therefore, I was questioning what might be some changes in store for this season. Seems like all agree this is not a likely scenario.

I watched the playoff game last year against Providence. UNH could not get much going offensively in that game. They are losing the All American Kelly Paton. Lavoie and Horn did have good first years last year but Kelly was the catalyst. She made it all go. Long who was not as much a playmaker but did contribute alot of offense and was a beneficiary of playing with Kelly. Who will step into the leadership role on the offensive end this year? Who will playmake. I think the team will be in a rebuild mode this year. Mac will get everything out of them that they have to give. Wll it be enough to put them in the top four in Hockey East. Can't wait to find out.

Minor correction - UNH played BU in the opening round. Other than that, you got it.

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Roster finally updated.

http://www.unhwildcats.com/sports/wice/2010-11/roster

Forward:

Allen
O'Neill
Lavoie
Horn
Gifford
Goloubef
Clark
Morrison
Skudder
Campbell
Armstrong
Kleinendorst

Defense:

Sheary
Brock
Hunt
Farris
Cuthbert
Dziengelewski
Chappell
Birchard

Goaltender:

Herman
Minton

So...Horn back to forward and Farris back to D. Cuthbert also listed as a D; iirc, she's been listed as F/D in the past.

Talk about young up front.

One of the two goalies really need to step up this year.

What happened to Adams? I thought she redshirted last year.

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Ax I understand it, she decided to continue her education north of the border. I was looking forward to seeing her play, but certainly wish her well.

Congrats Coach Hamlen!

Congrats Coach Hamlen!

ERIN HAMLEN NAMED FIRST COACH OF BOSTON’S NEW WOMEN’S PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY TEAM

Boston, Mass. (September 17, 2010) – Boston’s new elite women’s hockey team, playing in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) today announced the appointment of Erin Hamlen as the team’s first head coach.

“Erin is the perfect person to lead Boston’s newest professional sports team,” said G. Paul Hendrickson, the team’s general manager. “With her experience as both a player and coach, she understands the game and knows what it takes to motivate the players to victory.”

Erin Hamlen has been a member of the coaching staff at the University of New Hampshire for ten years, most recently serving as Associate Head Coach. She has also been a member of the coaching staff for the USA Select Team at the Four Nations Cup in 2006, and was an assistant coach on USA Hockey’s inaugural U.S. Women’s Under-18 Select Team during the 2007-08 season.

“Women’s hockey had exploded in popularity in recent years and I’m thrilled to be part of Boston’s first-ever women’s professional hockey team, said Hamlen. “I know we have our work cut out for us being the new kid on the block, but I’m up for the challenge.”

Hamlen was a goalie at the University of New Hampshire as well as a member of the U.S. National team from 1992-1997 and 1999-2001. She played professional hockey for the Toledo Storm (East Coast Hockey League) and became the first woman to record a victory in a professional hockey game.

For the 2010/2011 season, the CWHL will include five teams – Montreal, Burlington, Toronto, Brampton, and the newly formed Boston team. Become a fan of the team’s Facebook page: Boston CWHL Women’s Hockey or follow them on Twitter: @BostonCWHL.

That is diamond plate covering the gap to where the old sheet used to extend.

It was a great Kick off Saturday. Fun to see the rookies interact with the team. They are a hoot! Thanks to all who joined us! It's a great way to start off the season.

If you weren't there, you missed a big announcement:

The 2010 - 2011 UNH Women's Team will take on the Boston CWHL team (as of yet, a name has not been released) in an exhibition game this Sunday September 26, at 3pm.

The Boston team features former 'Cats Kacey Bellamy, Sam Faber, and Shannon Sisk, as well as Coach Hamlen at the helm.

Is this a secret? There's nothing on the website that I can see and I haven't gotten an e-mail.

Coach Mac and Coach Wood announced it at the Season Kickoff on Saturday. I don't think it was intended to be a big public event, but that there is no admission, and people are welcome to watch.

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

When they redid the corners did they change the dimensions of the ice surface? Sorry if I missed this earlier in the thread. I believe the rink is Olympic size, correct?

Still 100x200. Just a larger radius in the corners, and the goal line has been pushed back closer to the boards.

Re: UNH Offseason Thread

Look for that to change. ;)

The dimensions of the sheet or the goal line? If the former...boo. They were talking about reducing it to 95' a few years ago, but only cutting off from one side in order to fit an extra row of seats. But that would have thrown off sight lines and placed the rink off center in relation to seating.
