UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Yes it does appear that perhaps we are making better use of our parts to create a better whole. Not to disagree Chuck but I believe that we have moved away from the old (as in Umile implemented) style of play. Everyone in HE knew what we were going to do in every situation, makes a less gifted team pretty easy to coach against.
The theory in my house is that either MS has finally moved on to the idea to play in a different system or an old friend/colleague make some suggestions on how to get more out this young, fast energetic team.

Rather than a reference to Robert Johnson, I would have expected more likely mention of Capt Ed Smith and the Titanic, given your yachting experience.

You got me, old man. I don't know what I was thinking. Just figured you'd want to pass along your most prized ... assets to me when you were on your way out; guess I assumed wrong. BTW that cologne was damned expensive stuff ...

Apparently our old AHA nemesis RIT is coming to the Whitt for two games next season. If true, that is really aggressively bold scheduling by MS7, I think.

Hey ATW meant to reply sooner to this and could not agree more. We (Mr HR and I) saw some really good things first 2 games of the year and then poof...what happened? Well I know what happened and you said the quiet part put loud if you ask me. People here kind of laughed about the team saying how fast they were and guess what...thats their signature.

Sure it took time for the team to gel if you will allow for the new players but just look at the emergence of this Freshman class. This team is not suited for the old approach and It seems to be working if you tailor the coaching to the players best attributes. I mean thats coaching 101...

If Coach Souza wants to create the team that will get the program back to relevancy than he has to embrace that fact and ditch the old. You could be right he's getting input here and let's see how far it takes them this season..and more importantly next.

I think we're talking past each other ATW ... my compliment to Umile was that he could more quickly assess and identify his top players, set them into lines and pairings, and have them compiling early season results on a regular basis. I wasn't commenting on his old systems, and whether or not MS7 should keep them - he's absolutely not wedded to do so - but Souza has NOT shown the ability of his predecessor to get things down to what amounts to his best team more quickly. Mind you, none of us would care if the slow starts would regularly translate into deep postseason runs, a la Jerry York in his prime BC years a decade-plus ago. But consider this ... what if UNH started this season hovering around .500 and then hit this current hot stretch?? Home ice would be a lock, you'd have a great shot to get to Boston, and the NCAA bid, it would all be within reach.

At some point we should be able to expect the head coach to be able to effectively coach the entire season, not just dribs & drabs, here & there. My very-close-to-closed-mind is eking back open just a bit these last few games, but at some point there needs to be some consistency to the performances and results. Hopefully at the very least, the strong finish (if it can be maintained to a respectful ending) will translate into a lot of hope & enthusiasm with the current roster, and the feared mass migration come "portal time" may not happen, and maybe you even convince your captain to ride on for another year, keeping the band together, etc.

I'm not sure if MS7's staff and Barr's staff are fishing in the same pond or not, but this weekend should be fascinating.

I think this is the single most important weekend of the season...because like you said, it will point to how well each coach is potentially faring, esp on the recruiting side of things, player development, etc. Not to mention the HE points on the line...If I have this right this is Coach Barr's 2nd? season at the helm. Maine is a tough team; they play a hard game, have decent scorers, and looked to me like decent goal tending (Ostman) having watched a few of their games. UNH is in NO position to think that they don't have their work cut out for them; if we can stay out of the box (doubtful) and if Maine has their typical share of penalties (well, sorry, they do seem to rack those up) we could be ok; hoping for a split. (and that is considering our PP is clicking). Can't rely on those things entirely of course.

It also shows whether or not the past few games prove that UNH is 'turning a corner' as some fans suggest, and that our youthful bunch is being coached to their potential (I still agree ATW...something is indeed different; I've seen too many games this season to doubt you) I was 'lightly reprimanded' by a fellow fan this weekend that I have not given the team a fair shake given their experience level (lol you know who you are) and I guess maybe I haven't? But I know what I saw in the beginning and that dropped off like a row boat going over Niagara Falls as the games progressed (yes, I know we lost alot of close ones) Skill is also a big factor, as well as can that skill be coached to it's potential?

I'm excited for the first 'White Out the Whitt' in 4 years...bring it on!! BEAT MAINE!

They are 20 in the PWR.

...and really glad they are coming to UNH for 2 (if I read that right) as Mr. HR told me it's 8 hrs. to Rochester (eeek)...we are going there for the PGA Championship in May...so I better get ready for that long trek. I thought going to the 'North Country' and Union was a long drive..

Takes me about 8 hours to get to Buffalo one-way, so Rochester should be "only" 7 hours, 'Ref. ;-)

According to a quickie search, it's actually 6 hrs 57 mins (but trust me, it will take longer) OH, and gee, it looks like we'll go through Schenectady! Might have to stop off at that little hole in the wall bar for a late lunch :-)

So they did shrink the rink? Sorry, Ive been out of the loop since Maine was still relevant, more or less and have not been on the boards much until now. Being an engineer, curious as to how...did they lower the ice surface, or is there just a big gap between the first rows and the boards? I guess they could conceivably have raised the seating but that would seem to be impossibly expensive.
Is it back to regulation size now...whatisthat 85 x 200 ? How has it changed your game, any at all?

acs64, the work is complete and I believe that it is now 90x200 but someone can correct me if it is 85. I do not think that the ice level has changed. That would have required that the tunnels would need to be significantly changed. What they did was add an additional row that was dropped down approximately 20+/- inches and made it very wide. Padded folding chairs with lots of room in front and back. Not sure if this will be the final use of this space.

A little bird told me that there is going to be an announcement tomorrow regarding funding for renovations for the 'Whitt...stay tuned!

'Ref you truly are a glutton for punishment. Then again, UNH seems to have used good ol' Schenectady to "schenecta-dots" with the turnaround that's followed. Maybe MS7 had his "Robert Johnson" sold-his-soul moment during that visit??
