UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Awful. Sure they hit some posts their goaltender played well very disappointing nonetheless. BU will be one scary weekend....Souza has lost the room and it pains me to say that...And if we lose the decent players we do have to the portal it will be 100% on him.

So glad I didn’t watch any of that. Just when you think they hit rock bottom they keep digging. Got call Sousa the shovel as keep digging the team deeper. What is the lowest UNH has ever been in the pairiwise?

Soooo glad I didn't predict this game because I would have been laughed off this board. I think I need my head read as I was going to predict UNH 5 HC 1.

I apologize for being so negative...but have to echo the rock bottom posts here and online.

Where is the team from opening weekend?!?!?!

Long gone and never to return. This season is a complete and absolute humiliation. How bad does it have to get to prompt change? Does AD Allie realize we are now quickly becoming the WORST program in Division I hockey? Does she care?

At 55th, UNH still ahead of seven other teams in the PWR, although Maine has left us in the dust with their 5-1 win today over Atlantic Hockey powerhouse AIC.

Reminds me of when Clark tells the family they are on the “thresholds of hell” in the Christmas Vacation movie…Eeekkk

What an interesting and contrasting weekend of entertainment at the WIS Estate. So, tomorrow night I will be attending the following event, in which one of the three surviving members of a legendary '70's prog rock band will be playing live "alongside" two deceased bandmates, plus two super talented younger guys filling in some of the breaks ...

Welcome Back My Friends: The Return of Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Wilbur

... but before we finish up the weekend with a potentially macabre/glorious trip to Boston, there was UNH Hockey.

Why do I mention this here? Well, one event promises to be a compelling affair, despite two of its stars being "well past their prime", so to speak. There will be entertainment, and the people who attend will be glad to be there, recalling many past exciting visits when the full band was a little more "lively" than in their present state. The surviving member (72 yrs. old) will do a 15 minute drum solo, shaming many peers of half his age.

In the other event, the protagonist of one of the teams is "dead man walking", and apparently folks who used to care deeply about his program have to shield their eyes in horror, awaiting the next inevitable downturn. Used to be that UNH Hockey made trips to Worcester that were part of this long-since-abandoned concept of win or go home, post season hockey. Y'know, kind of the variety of Hockey akin to Coach Santos' current Football exploits (congrats on stuffing Fordham), or Coach Hubbard's recent run of post season adventures of the Soccer variety, both across the street and comfortably removed from what has become The Coffin Part Deux. (apologies to Hartwell)

Coach Souza, please, for the love of God, resign ... afford your colleagues some dignity in trying to clean up the mess you've created, and maybe give them something favorable to talk about in their soon-to-follow next job interviews.

Please.

Now remember everyone, no criticizing Souza, he has kids...

Losing to Holy Cross is much better than beating Holy Cross and pretending it means anything because it breaks up the skid. Lose 'em all and make the necessary changes.

Michigan State won a total of 34 games the previous three seasons. They're currently 11-4-1 and #7 in the PWR. If a school cares, these things can change quickly...

I need to apologize to everyone on this thread. My faithfulness had this team winning some games between now and March. I am sorry for my optimism and please forgive me. I now know the error of my ways.

The over unders will now go from the game line to my bar tabs upstairs. I was at Libby's tonight with some of the football guys/parents and it was refreshing to congratulate and wish them good luck next weekend.

Are refunds possible? At dinner tonight my youngest said she was wearing a BU jersey next weekend if we go to Boston, coming from someone who has been to games since she was 6 months old.

Is this rock bottom? It has to be or if not, I can't imagine where that line is.

I think that Rock Bottom would be if we do not muster a combination of three wins or ties in our remaining 19 regular season and two MBPBEGAM games, which would avoid reaching the NRN in losses of 30, surpassing our 1985-86 record of 5-29-3 (that season was head coached by Charlie Holt and not Dick Umile).

Agree this is for the best. Now everyone can plan ahead for March 9th.

Disagree. With recruiting being 2 years in the future, nothing changes quickly. It will be a long rebuild even with a competent head coach.
Speaking of which, MSU hired last year's USA National U18 Coach

the current USA National U18 Coach looks promising.

Not the UNH Dan Muse, but maybe close enough. NHL pedigree, won a NC with Yale, and has background in the USA pipeline. (Which already put him well ahead of Souza in the resume department in 2015, when Umile made his call) And he was a HC for the Chicago Steel USHL champs before going to the NHL.

Would seem to be a good tactician - not sure about his recruiting chops, but with his background that should be attractive enough for a salesman assistant to sell.

Dan Muse is making his IIHF head coaching debut as the lead man for the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team. Muse was named a head coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program in August and served as the Under-18 Team's head coach for the 2020-21 season.

Muse holds previous international staff experience as he served as the U.S. National Junior Team's video coach for two years (2013-14), helping Team USA capture the gold medal at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia.

Muse brings 15 years of coaching experience to the NTDP and was an assistant coach for the Nashville Predators for three seasons prior. With Nashville, Muse’s duties focused on leading the penalty kill and working with their group of forwards. He was a part of two Central Division champion teams, including the Presidents’ Trophy winning squad during the 2017-18 season.

Prior to joining the Predators in 2017, Muse served as head coach of the USHL’s Chicago Steel for two seasons, where he led the team to a Clark Cup championship in 2017.

Previously, he was part of NCAA Division I coaching staffs at Yale University (2009-2015), where he helped the Bulldogs to the 2013 NCAA title, and Sacred Heart University (2008-09). He was also was an assistant coach at Williams College (2007-08) after beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Milton Academy in 2005.

Muse earned a B.A. in criminal justice in 2005 at Stonehill College, where he served as an alternate captain in 2004-05.

UNH (3-11-1) vs. HC (3-12-1). Attendance 408. Glad I went to the football game. Watching on NESN+ I didn't see any quit, thought we played okay. Once again we can't finish, hit multiple posts/crossbar and made the opposing goalie, a three year Bentley transfer with a total of 18 GP (3.32, 8.91), look like Kenny Dryden. Lack of rebound control or a defensive rebound clear cost us in OT. The football 'cats seek revenge at Fitton field in 6 days!

Pretty much spot on regarding the basics of the game...I mean even the announcers felt that "it could easily be 4 to 1" but with our lack of being able to out the puck in the net etcetcetc. Not sure that's going to change anytime soon.

Perhaps for me its focusing on who is playing well...like the effort Harrison Blaisdell who scored a great goal last night. Or Cy LeClerc who continues to hustle and win face offs. Or a couple of the other Frosh like Winters who can find the back of the net. The team is going to have to find it from within.

if we don't do this we fans implode which has already happened. If the team has a bad outing Friday at the Whitt it could get ugly. Who knows...you tend to pay up or down to your opponent. Maybe BU will look past us and we have some much needed puck luck? A girl can dream....

Explain to me what a decent rebuild looks like...obviously competent coaching is huge...recruiting players year in amd out that can provide depth (which we have been missing out on for quite a few seasons). If UNH decides to attempt this what would it look like?

Thanks Watcher for that information info. Was wondering who the candidates would be for next coach, going with when and not if they change that will help me get thru the Sousa error. Does a new coach come in a do a Carvel and clean house right away? Think that is more feasible these days with the transfer portal 5th year eligibility , and not going after division 3 players. Could be a quick fix while fixing the recruiting mistakes. Sad that we aren’t even into December and looking at next season already. Be honest this is the first time I can remember I don’t really care if I miss a game and would make others plans if they came up where in the past would tell people sorry I have a game to go to instead
