UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

I know the team is bad but tonight looked so disorganized. The old offense was bad but not this putrid. If you too UNH +2.5 you would have won at -110

Huh? Wanna explain your last.sentemce? Point was Harvard didn't give us an inch...what we are 0 and 6 on the PP?

As Snively would say why can't we get a coach like that...oh wait...

Ill be honest...brought my sister in law to the game and didnt really pay much attention at times. That cant be good.

I set tonight's line at UNH +2.5. So at the start of the game UNH was leading 2.5-0. Add the goals UNH won 3.5-3, so anyone who took UNH plus the spread would have won.

I figure the only way to make this interesting is to give the game odds and a goal spread.

22 years of going to games, I have seen poor efforts, execution, whatever. For the older crowd on here who saw both games was this a worse performance than UNH vs Michigan in the 2004 regionals at the Verizon?

Early lines for Friday

ZooMass in a spiral.

Record 5-5-1 overall, 1-5-0 in HE
GF 3.36 overall 2.33 in HE
GA 2.91 overall 4.5 in HE

Home: 5-2
Away: 0-3-1

UNH

Home: 1-3-1
Away: 2-6

Record 3-9-1 overall, 0-8-1 in HE (ouch)
GF 1.69 overall 1.11 in HE
GA 3.15 overall 3.67 in HE

As much as ZooMass has struggled in HE and away, UNH can't score.

Umass Money Line (-165)
UNH Money Line (+140)
Umass Spread -1.5 (+160)
UNH Spread +1.5 (-190)
Over 6 (-115)
Under 6 (-105)

I'd take UMass money line. Prediction is 4-1 with an EN at the end.

For example, the Sons of Scotty Borek (not Bowman) are now 6-1-0 in HEA, giving up only 11 goals in 7 games. “Why cannot we get head coaches like dat? Oh …………... Wait …….….. “

Ah..gotcha. You guys have at it! Sadly HR can barely do basic math word problems so cant play along haha....

So who was there last night and heard the fire Souza coming from the stands after the game? (Student section) Alot of fans started to clap...Listen I'm not hapoy either but can't help but take the players feelings into account. Not saying fans shouldn't speak out either. You could see how they felt. Noticed DU in the stands where he usually sits...I'll admit to yelling (and I sit in 119) as Jim T was walking towards the tunnel at the end of the game I yelled "Bring Jim Tortorella back to Durham" so there...

Not sure I agree it was a total lack of effort. Frankly I think they arent conditioned. Harvard played a lock down in your face game coupled with some nice snipes we could not handle. And yes I know the skill of our players.

Anyway onto UMassy who is desperate to move ahead of their crappy weekend being swept so I'm sure Carvel is not going to accept anything less than a blow out W in Durham...

I agree the players feelings and their involvement in this total clustf**k need to be left out of it. But if there were chants of Fire Souza - I don't see an issue. That isn't the players fault. You can't fire players nor would you want to in a college setting. However, there is one person who can be removed from the situation - and we all know NOTHING will change until that time comes. This yet another lost season, there is NO reason to make the drive of about an hour for me to watch a home game. Souza was the wrong guy from the start - I was ok with giving him time to turn it around, but he sure as hell seems to have only made things worse. Normally I would say wait until the end of the season to make a change, but that is unfair to these athletes. They need a coach who can coach. Not a suit who is drowning.

I am not an alum of UNH. I grew up in the Dover/Somersworth area and attended games from my youngest years. I have been a fan for 25+ years and I have never felt lower about this program. This used to be the shining example of athletics in our state, now I honestly question if they could beat some of the local DII/DIII teams most nights. I hope Dr. Rich makes this right before next season or else she will be aiding in the harm that Marty brought to this program.

Soccer is soaring - Hubbard is a damn genius.

Santos has turned football around and we could see a playoff game in two weeks time!

Basketball is/was/always will be a disaster - if it wasn't a DI requirement to field a team they would be best to drop the damn thing and bring back lax or baseball. But even Basketball is better off than hockey right now...how in the world have we gotten to this point. We are what Merrimack was when I was young. Automatic W for our opponents.

If the chants have started, they will only be louder at the next sound defeat which may well be on Friday. I feel for the players because they are watching their D1 hockey dream get snuffed out by those who are supposed to support it (the team staff). I doubt any of them read this bit if they do I hope they understand the snark and outright disdain for the current position of this team is not levied upon them. We as fans have to sit, wait, and hope one of the adults in the room realize it is time for wholesale change on the paid ranks of this program.

I worry that Souza will be able to talk his way into remaining but jettisoning the two assistants. If that is the case the question becomes who wants to hitch their coaching career to that sinking ship. It needs to be a top down remove and replace operation, I hope someone sees it and comes through with it. With the right people captaining the ship this team with the players on it could be in a better position. At least fighting in the 6-8 places in this conference to start out while the actual rebuild starts.

Yes, and wasn't really a 'chant' per se more of a one time thing...but loud enough that alot of people in 118/119 101 started clapping....I didn't see the actual person but asked my friends in 119 who said it was most definitely a student...

If we had a Herrion-caliber coach running the Hockey team, we'd at least be competitive towards the middle of HEA.

If Hoops had an MS7-caliber coach running the show, they'd be struggling to compete against top NHIAA programs.

Wonder how much Soccer Thursday will outdraw Hockey Tuesday by later this week at Chez Scarano?

I think the "save your job/sacrifice an assistant" card may be too late in the game for MS7 to play, db62. The worse this gets, the less of a "close call" this becomes, and the whole thing has to be torn down. But IF somehow that did happen, and it's possible (since none of us have any idea what the new AD will do, since she doesn't have a track record) ... never underestimate the willingness of assistant coaches to hitch onto pretty much anything. Assistant coaching is sometimes like a real life game of musical chairs, and you never know where you will be when the music stops. If either/both Stewart and/or Guiliano were jettisoned today, you'd have a stack of resumes in the AD's office by Friday morning.

Also, don't think for a second that guys like Stewart and Guiliano don't believe they could do better than MS7 if offered the chance. Especially a guy like Stewart, who was hired by UNH before MS7 arrived in the scene a year later. Penny for his thoughts under truth serum during his drive home after the latest disaster on ice. The coaching dream dies hard.

I'm increasingly with Dan in the camp of reluctantly hoping for losses to bring the current regime to an end ASAP. Crappy place to be, but it is what it is ...

No question that there would be applicants. Question would be what the quality of those individuals would be. I hope it is too late to play the "I'm not the problem, they are" card. The wheels have been spinning long enough, we aren't getting out of this rut without a tow truck now.

Thing is...will it? (I mean, the losses will continue but, the coach in the middle isn't going anywhere soon, if ever??) And as per Stewie, I'd love to see him behind the bench in the middle slot for the rest of the season....Just HR's HO. Then, open up the job FOR A NATIONAL SEARCH LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE and see what 'lands on the desk of the AD'. You are right, that there are a bevy of hopeful assistants out there who would jump at the chance to coach at UNH. But dreams of being HC there would be dashed in an instant if nothing changes; all they could hope for is a resume builder type experience.

Chuck, you mention having a coach like Herrion as HC hockey coach would fare much better than a MS7 in the bball position. I don't know anything about Coach H. Can you expound on that thinking for me, thanks. I know he's a fiery guy; I also know his program isn't successful but, they seem to be doing ok so far this season (early I know at 2-1 and no idea about their competition)....

A version of this happened to Miami’s Enrico Blasi a few years ago. I recall he didn’t talk his way into it, but was told to get new assistants or be replaced. He did so and was eventually replaced anyway. Dan?

Hopefully it is obvious to everyone that Souza has to go, though Dr. Rich is the only one that really matters. Here is the problem, you fire him today I don't think either assistant is capable of making this even a remotely competitive team. They are also part of the problem with the coaching and recruiting.

And this is not like pro sports where you can just clean house and bring up the AHL coach or someone else who is sitting at home. It would be difficult to find a staff mid-season, especially to try and save a sinking ship.

Maybe if Souza is canned there is some renewed energy with the two coaches left, but can they change the current culture and is there even a shadow of talent to be competitive?
