UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Coaching you say? MS7’s case for mediocrity as opposed to abysmal: UNH NPI at end of regular season is 40th out of 63 teams, so if mediocrity is equivalent to average with large error bars, then the mediocrity range might be defined by a NPI between 22 and 42, in which case we avoid the abysmal category by two NPI places. Will that be good enough for a 3-year extension or a 5-year extension to MS7’s contract this coming December? I am thinking maybe only a 3-year contract extension to give MS7 time to recruit some blue chippahs with the new gold-plated locker room(s).
I am thinking MS7 has a lot less going for him as his contract is expiring than he did last time around. If he's gonna pull out a second winning season in his contract year (again), it's gonna look a whole lot more different than last time did. Charm Offensive 2.0 ain't gonna fly, if only because his Hallelujah Chorus isn't nearly as large this time as last time, and barring a shocking about-face at Conte vs. NU (neutral site will give them a puncher's chance) and then a daunting road win over either the #1 or #2 seed, a semifinals trip to Boston isn't going to be on his CV this year to polish up that stanking turd of a record he's amassed.

I know there is a huge element of sarcasm built into your post Snives, but unless there is an absolutely shocking turnaround between now and next March, I think the ceiling for MS7's next deal - if he is even offered one - is a one year "show me" deal ... which is what it should have been after the 2024 season ...

Potluck, you have an inalienable right to your opinion but this is just ridiculous. Are you a UNH fan or just a flamer?
It has been admirable to watch you vouch for this dimwit's right to his own opinion, but as you so well point out here, his agenda is only slightly to the right of Mao Zedong and Vlad Ilyitch Lenin. He writes five-figure checks annually to UNH from the comfort of the DC swamps, just for the privilege of getting to bury his nose in AD Rich's posterior. But otherwise, make no mistake, he hates NH to his very core. Definitely a big government superfan, probable Magoo voter, etc.

Probably severe #TDS as well. I find it interesting that he/she hasn't responded that his/her naysayers have the right to their opinions too. The Minister of Truth comes to mind which didn't work out so well for Dems.

So, who jumps into the portal in April?

Covid extra year has expired except for maybe a few, none on this years roster (had to be playing in the 2020-21 season).

There's a second portal period specific for teams with coaching changes.

Bashing the state like this, in this kind of forum, isn’t warranted in my book.
I really appreciate your posts. I’m a UNH hockey fan - alum that is furious at how NH has traditionally let UNH float along with minimal state support relative to the support at other flagship state schools receive. UNH has been heavily reliant on federal money and Massachusetts out of state tuition to be a fine school over the years and stay competitive. No longer . It’s now failing.

NH residents like Buford, Elwood, The Dumbcat, Meathead and Emily The Flunky allegedly support UNH while more intelligent posters recognize they are the problem. They are lazy flat earthers proud of “our way of life”, which is a life of no progress and growth. As a result UNH burns with minimal funding as programs through the school slide.

And they collectively think people like Mike Souza are the problem. On one hand I suppose such foolishness likely is caused by infections caused by a lifetime of poor dental maintenance. But it’s remarkable to read. Indeed they are proud of demanding people do “more with less” even though the five him them have accomplished nothing with less in their own lives. Why would UNH be different than them?

I used to love UNH hockey and would like to see it improve. But that’s unlikely with a NH state government run by a ship of fools who think like Buford, Elwood, Meathead, The Dumbcat and Emily The Flunky.

So here's the deal, cpo pottymole. When you're a resident of NH, you get a say in how NH is run. But with you being a megalomaniac and all, somehow you think you have a say in how we run things up here. Wrong. Why don't you concentrate on fixing the clusterfu@k that is Baltimore, or the State of MD first?

NH is doing just fine right now, and it's only getting better. US News & World Report puts us at #2 (behind only Utah). MA lags at #9, MD even more so at #20.

More lies and disinformation from cpo pottymole. NH GDP has been growing (5.5%) at a rate well above MD (3.8%) and MA (3.3%). As far as "progress" is concerned, that word is a synonym for bigger and more intrusive government, at all levels. Happy to concede on the "progress" issue, dimwit ... who also uses the term "more intelligent posters" to loosely describe folks who marginally agree with his wacko left-leaning agenda.

Idiots who leave garbled sentence fragments lying around like this shouldn't be chirping about poor dental hygiene.

But self-awareness has never been your strong suit, as proven for about the hundredth time this year in this excerpt.

I used to love UNH hockey and would like to see it improve. But that’s unlikely with a NH state government run by a ship of fools who think like Buford, Elwood, Meathead, The Dumbcat and Emily The Flunky.
I sincerely do appreciate that you put me at the front of that list of esteemed posters, cpo. I was wondering if Grouch was gonna surpass me, and to me that would have been devastating, for at least 3-5 seconds. In the end, it confirms I'm still living rent free in your dopey empty noggin. And I still own you. lock stock & pork barrel.

Thank you for your attention to this matter 😂 😂 😂

The curious thing about working the international markets is that I've had the opportunity to lecture at universities around the world. Most of these schools have a fraction of the UNH budget but deliver outsized academic results.

Rather than fostering a culture of administrative bloat and a slavish devotion to capital vanity projects, budget is used, you know, to actually educate students.

Your ignorant and pejorative comments default to personal attacks rather than any cogent argument based on logic or fact. Why?
It's typically an indication of impotent thought processes with a dash of intellectual laziness.

Which leads us to MS7. Budget and bureaucracy are not the root causes of his failures as a coach. It's an easy narrative to fall back on to buy time, but after an eight years track record of coaching underperforming teams, he needs to look himself in the mirror and admit the obvious.

He's the problem based on ice results and his lack of coaching talent. Not Budget. Not rink size. Not the locker room.

Excuses are easy. Accountability is hard.

Been reading this thinking back when USCHO forum was pretty much a free for all. Anything went but it was mostly between different fan bases not one fan base. Interesting change.
As much as I would welcome a return to those good ol' Wild West days here at USCHO ... I'm not sure the current state of the UNH fanbase is demonstrably any different than the UMaine threads used to be back in the days of internal strife over Coaches Whitehead and Gendron. No Good Ship Lollipop back then, eh? ;)

Probably a few guys we would rather not lose, but who look like diamonds in the rough to more successful programs and their competent head coaches ...

I think we can all agree we haven’t been happy with the results on the ice the last 7-8+ years, and we all have the right to vent our frustrations about what we think is the root cause of the problem, how to fix it, etc.

We can agree to disagree on many of these points.

With that being said, I think there is a fine line between being respectful and disrespectful to others and hearing their thoughts etc. We are all adults here, and I’d hope we all give the respect to others as we would want unto ourselves.

I’ll leave it at that. Tough L last night… onto Wednesday night at Conte…

Well I'm thoroughly disgusted with our state government right now on a multitude of issues. Especially the push for a lack of state support with education...the 'open enrollment' mess...but I try not to clog up this board with all of that junk.

But what I'm really disgusted with is this will be how many years that UNH hockey (barring a complete opening of the Red Sea) is facing yet another short 'second season'. And there is no way this is going to change anytime soon.

In all due respect you dont feel coaching matters? Have you been a coach? All I need to do is look at the job Greg Carvel has done with UMass...who..prior to his arrival..had posters feel it was always a certain W to play against..

To be fair..without checking their athletic dept has the funds UNH doesnt. (Please correct if I'm wrong). He comes in from St.L and has an NC in what..4 seasons? A HE title?

Even for me who doesnt always get it right here- God knows I feel the eye rolling haha-I know this much...it's a culture change that drives teams like his to get the job DONE.

This is NOT the case for UNH hockey and that has been clearly demonstrated with the results of the COACH who is...at the end of the day ultimately in charge.

I'm very proud of the fact that UNH beat 6 ranked teams this season. Sweeping Maine was most unexpected. Who knows maybe we get something positive in this post season.
We will renew our tickets for a multitude of reasons. But I can tell you many arent going to. Many won't come back until there is a coaching change.

And folks...there isnt going to be one...this is one thing I am probably going to be right about. Let the eye rolling commence. 🙄

I also agree with this sentiment, and think there is less good will backing MS7 now compared to 2023-2024 timeframe.

I would point to the pervasive pessimism on this board, comments on social media, and also certain chants that have been spoken at the Whitt this year. I don’t recall it being AS widespread as it is now compared to then… Perhaps it is just my own bias, but it seems the “winds of change” are stronger now than they have been in the MS7 era…

If we lose big on Wednesday, I put it at 50-50 Souza comes back. If he wins and we get demolished in the quarterfinals, I put it at 70-30 he comes back. If we miraculously make it to the garden, I put it at 99-1 he comes back for the last year (at least).

If we run the table through HE and NCAAs - lifetime contract for sure!

My guess is if UNH moves on from MS7 you will see an uptick in STH next year, even if there’s a mass exodus in the portal and we go 5-30 or whatever Barr/Carvel did in their first year at the helm.

People will give a new coach a leash of at least 2-3 years to figure things out before bashing the school/admin again.

Again, this is all complicated by the AD contract situation at the moment… clarity is needed on that front (I think) and hopefully we get that sooner vs later…
