UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

A coach at a private institution has virtually the same calculus in deciding whether to cut a player against the potential reputation impacts and litigation possibility. I was curious if you were aware of specific regulatory considerations for the coaches at UNH but as expected it was just nonsense.

Private institutions dont have to open the books or have have statutory requirements mandating quarterly or annual reporting to the general public and taxpayers.

Big difference and a completely different set of rules. Think of the reporting requirements of a publicly trading company versus a privately traded company. The public company needs to report quarterly earnings to regulators, investors and the public at large. A private company tracks all the same financials but has no requirement to open its books to the public.

Conceptually, the same as if this situation happened at UNH vs a private school like BU.

Private Schools are not government agencies. They are not bound by constitutional due process, first amendment constraints, state administrative law, public records laws and state oversight bodies.

Therefore, private universities allow coaches more autonomy in roster decisions, remove players without public scrutiny, resolve disputes internally without public disclosures, take action based on fit or culture without legal review and use private conduct codes or discipline processes.

The decision making process is entirely internal at a private institution and not subject to public disclosure laws.

Well, we got 6 points left on the table for Thursday and Saturday. The ‘Cats sit in 9th, 5 points behind Merrimack for 8th with one game in hand. We can all root for UML to beat Merrimack on senior night tomorrow, but I’m not sure UNH has two wins in them this weekend to overtake the Warriors.

Thurs: UNH 2 UConn 1
Sat: UNH 1 UMA 3

I do think we take one game this weekend, and I favor the UConn game over UMA. While we did recently beat UMA at the Whitt, their goalie (Hrabel) scares me, as I think he’s ones of the better goalies across college hockey this year. They will also have Musa back, who did not play against UNH in either game.

UML finishes with Merrimack and BU after their bye week. I presume they get 2-3 points when all is said and done. Therefore I think UNH likely finishes in 9th - which I guess is progress compared to last year? We assuredly won’t fall back into the basement, which I guess is also nice (but setting the bar pretty low).

This would lead to a road game at Lawlor in the first round. While this has been a house of horrors the last few years, it should be a winnable game (theoretically, at least). We then likely would travel to Providence for the quarterfinals, and we have recent evidence to say we can win there as well (we also have history of winning in Providence to send us to Boston).


This is, of course, a VERY optimistic view, but I do see the slightest possibility to reach Boston. Chauvette has proven he’s more than capable of stealing a game or two, and we are gonna need him to stand on his head from here on out.

Stranger things have happened. What a joy it would be to make it back to Boston this year. I won’t get my hopes up too high just yet, but stranger things have happened.

I am thinking it is more likely we play NE at Walter Brown and then Providence. This is a better pathway than having to go to Lawler to start. I like the way the boys are playing the last couple of weeks and think there is an outside shot we get back to the garden. Go Cats!!

I do remember. I also remember the past 10 years, but I will always remain optimistic, and this team is capable of beating any team in Hockey East. I believe the two best teams in HE are BC and UConn. We should avoid both until the garden. I am actually rooting for Merrimack to beat Lowell so that they finish above us and we play NE in the first round. Selfishly, I would prefer to travel to Merrimack, but I like our chances vs NE. Providence would be next in line and are primed for an upset. They prefer to play wide open and we clogged things up very well in their barn. I like our chances
