UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Freshman forward Félix Gagnon (Jonquière, Quebec) leads Hockey East and is second in the nation with a .626 faceoff winning percentage among players with over 100 faceoff attempts.
He’s been absolute money this year at the Faceoff dish. UNH has had a fair number of goals right off the face off win. More than I can remember in recent years.

I hope he doesn’t hit the portal this off-season… I’ve been fairly impressed with him, Newcombe, and McDonald from the recent Canadian recruits. Lots to potentially grow with looking to next year and beyond!

Prediction time again for this weekend. All weekends are big at this point of the season, and this one is no different. This prediction is a bit tough, as I feel UNH has usually played much better on Friday vs. Saturday this season, but they’re away on Friday this go around.

Fri: UNH 3 UMA 2
Sat: UNH 2 UMA 3 (OT)

I’m foreseeing a swap of 3-2 games, but UNH gets an extra point with an OT loss on Saturday. I’m feeling a bit more optimistic than usual given the strong finish on Saturday.

In all reality, UNH truly needs at least 4 points this weekend to get out of the basement. The schedule gets no easier the final two weekends, finishing with PU, UConn, and back against UMA. If they lay another goose egg this weekend, I’m not feeling confident seeing more than 1-2 points the rest of the way… likely sealing our fate back in the basement to close the year, and a daunting trip back to Agganis or Lawlor in the 1st round.

Need to build momentum to finish out strong. Play like you did last Friday, and I think 4+ points is possible this weekend.

Let’s go!

I know how humble Chuck is and doesn’t like the spotlight. But he will oblige usually if you request an on-the-spot rendition. Trust me, it is something he prides himself on. He gets enjoyment showcasing his talents. You would be surprised how well Chuck can sing and you just need to say “hit me one time with that Smalltown Boy, Chuck”.
Where the he11 did this all come from?!? I wouldn't go near a live mic, in any setting. It's not modesty, it's knowing my limitations lol. Could qualify me for a "crimes against humanity" charge, even. 😂

You do give away your lack of local knowledge, putting "Jade Palace" on 1A though. It used to be on 108 in Stratham, until they changed the name a couple of years ago, apparently due to a dram shop lawsuit. And not to be confused with "Jade Garden" further up 108 towards Titletown, in lovely downtown Newmarket.

Musically, I'm Just happy to work through the back catalogues of ELP, Rush, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath (Dio version) and the like. Letting the pros do it! :)

Anyone know if this is the same Ryan Cordeiro as the former UNH and Merrimack player?

Given that he was from the NE area and this mess happened in a rink I'd wager it's probable this is the same guy. May have saved some lives.

edit - there is a 2001 birthdate with the same name from RI so maybe less likely now that I originally thought.
I do think "our" Ryan Cordeiro was originally from the South Coast area of MA, and with it being connected with a hockey rink, it's certainly possible.

Having said that Nick ... there are probably a thousand "Ryan Cordeiros" from the South Coast and RI, with the heavy Portuguese population and all ...

So looking ahead to the weekend ... tonight's question to the group is this - would you buy a used car from this man??

So, how many of our 58 goals (on pace for the fewest goals in a season ever) were scored off a face off dish? Gagnon’s second line has somewhere between 15 and 20 goals on the season (not sure how many goals scored by replacements for Lavins when injured). First line has 23 goals.

Looks like Alex Westlund was hired as as a UConn assistant this year as the goalie coach (replacing Vince Stalletti - who left for the AHL). Westlund was the goalie coach for the Red Wings for 3 years and also the Goalie coach for Team USA in 2024 for the IIHF Championship. Appears to be decent pedigree, and him/Stalletti seem to have gotten the best out of Muszelik.

One has to wonder if Muszelik would have left if he knew Hellsten was also leaving… if I recall Hellsten appeared like he was staying until he got the call for an opportunity to head back home later in the offseason. Perhaps Muszelik had already made up his mind though.

I wonder how far he makes it after college and if he makes it to the big show. I wish him all the best.
I think the next goalie decision is critical to this team's success next season. I was actually surprised that he went with KC (no disrespect) at the beginning of this season. I thought Coombs was going to grow with the rest of the new guys. At the very least a rotation would have let you know for sure what you have in Coombs. There will be no upper classman at that position next year. I think a transfer is coming and they should be able to get a good one. Reading about Westlund makes me wonder if MS7 has the right supporting staff. I am sure I will get bashed for wondering that.

Ive also been perplexed as to why we haven’t seen Coombs at all this year… he’s a bigger guy (6’2”) and posted a very good save pct (.926) for a championship team in the SJHL last year. I’m not as familiar with this league, but it may be similar to the BCHL?

It appears long gone are the days of Umile rotating goalies to around a 50:50 split. I can’t remember the last set of goalies where they did that. MS7 seems to get locked into one, and (outside of maybe a shakeup 2-3 times a year or an injury) he sticks with his main guy. This or he does make a change (I think Hellsten) and the other guy never gets a legitimate second shot.

Don’t get me wrong, I think KC has had a decent year. He has had some games where he has been absolutely left out to dry by his defense (PC game a few weeks ago) which hurts his overall stat line.

Very curious to see what happens in the portal this spring, especially with two more goalies in the pipeline (Grout and Henriquez) likely arriving in the next 1-2 years. I presume they target another 1 year guy like KC to help bridge the gap, but likely it leaves one of Coombs, Grout, or Henriquez to never get serious playing time in Durham.

How about 2022/23 when Muszelik got into 13 games and Fessenden 23?

But, agreed in general, as need to go back pre-DT (Ty Rone) before that.

Meanwhile, maybe Whale can be a red shirt this season and come back next season as he has played in only three games. Mike Robinson played in six games and was a red shirt in 2017/18.

The more important aspect is getting defensemen. Carr, Haan, and de Haro are slow and lack any playmaking to get the puck out of the zone. Fitzy has had better moments but still gets loss out there at times. I think Philbrick will get better with age and has the pieces but unless you get better D, the second coming of Marin Brodeur would not matter.

Patience is warranted as the defense is young (Fitzy is the loan upper classman). de Haro made an impressive rush and pass on Winters goal to put us ahead vs BU last weekend. They also lack goaltending that gets behind the net, making it much harder to clear the zone. I see a big jump up next year from this group.

The reason why Coombs isn't playing is because our illustrious HC is coaching for his job (again), has chosen his guy for the season, and will ride him into the ground from here on out. Whale will only play again if there is an injury to KC, or if there is a blowout where MS7 doesn't want to risk his lead dog any further.

Coombs was never meant to play this season. I'm not saying it's right, I'm not saying it's wrong ... I'm just saying why this is all happening.

His contract runs out next Spring IF he gets there (probable not definite). He's not focused on anything beyond that until/unless he gets another extension.

Sadly, this is the self-preservation uber alles mindset of an insecure head coach with a chronically losing record. He can only BS his boss so much. Simples.

We thought there was gonna be a "big jump up next year" before the start of last season, when MS7 brought back most of his lone winning team for another kick of the can. There is only so much upward competitive mobility you can realize as a team if the coaching is mediocre. Sadly, we do have mediocre coaches.

Besides, aren't most of the CHL guys older than Fitzy at this point, setting aside class years/matriculation dates? If I'm wrong, my apologies ...

Agreed on all points Chuck, except that this is a whole new group. It seems to be taking a bit for the CHL players to acclimate despite their age. Trying to remain optimistic.
