Coombs played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League which is considered one level below the BCHL.Ive also been perplexed as to why we haven’t seen Coombs at all this year… he’s a bigger guy (6’2”) and posted a very good save pct (.926) for a championship team in the SJHL last year. I’m not as familiar with this league, but it may be similar to the BCHL?
It appears long gone are the days of Umile rotating goalies to around a 50:50 split. I can’t remember the last set of goalies where they did that. MS7 seems to get locked into one, and (outside of maybe a shakeup 2-3 times a year or an injury) he sticks with his main guy. This or he does make a change (I think Hellsten) and the other guy never gets a legitimate second shot.
Don’t get me wrong, I think KC has had a decent year. He has had some games where he has been absolutely left out to dry by his defense (PC game a few weeks ago) which hurts his overall stat line.
Very curious to see what happens in the portal this spring, especially with two more goalies in the pipeline (Grout and Henriquez) likely arriving in the next 1-2 years. I presume they target another 1 year guy like KC to help bridge the gap, but likely it leaves one of Coombs, Grout, or Henriquez to never get serious playing time in Durham.
Ryan Grout has DI potential but probably needs one more season in the WHL. He's played some solid games this season but overall has a 4.00 GAA and .875 Save %.
I project Leo Henriquez as a 2026 or '27 commit. He's a Neutral Zone 4-star prospect and is exciting to watch (e.g., goalie fight; scored a goalie goal). It will partly depend on whether UNH can land a transfer at or above the Jakob Hellsten level or an uncommitted, high-end goalie ranked by NHL Central Scouting.
