UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Came across a name today that I hadn’t heard in a long time - former longtime assistant Lassonde, who has mostly been working with the USN U17/18 teams for the last 5-6 years (and Olympics back in 2022).

A few weeks back we were talking about prospective replacements/interims if MS7 is let go. Any thoughts on potentially bringing Lassonde back? Even on a short term interim role. He’s NH native, and obviously has a long history with UNH, mostly during the glory days of the early 2000s. I can’t remember what led to his leaving (if he left in good terms or not).

I looked and it appears he’s never been a head coach. He’s in his early 60s now, so a long term head coaching gig may not be in the cards for him. But maybe if he wants to come “home” for a few years before heading off into the sunset? To get the program back on the right foot?

I mean hey, Jimmy T came back to the program after an extended absence, could Lassonde do the same? Once a Wildcat always a Wildcats perhaps…

This may just be wishful thinking, apologies if this comes across as extremely far-fetched.

Lassonde has been away from UNH professionally for a while now, and he's kind of further developed his niche as primarily a "goalie's coach", which may have been a luxury Coach Umile could afford earlier this century, but doesn't seem to be a solid match for what UNH is gonna need to turn the program around. A guy his age (same as mine - eek!) who's never led a program, and would have to take on a heavy recruiting load - unless he's got some younger pals looking for the security of a D-1 Assistant's job that wouldn't mind picking up that slack - just doesn't seem to fit the bill.

He's probably pretty happy doing what he's doing now, working to mold and improve elite talent, as opposed to dealing with all the added pressures that a D-1 HC job entails. Great guy by all accounts, but not who I'd think (in a "horses for courses" way). As with other excellent coaching talent that supported Umile back in the glory days ... their primes have come and gone, and other than Borek and maybe Jimmy T, everyone else is either retired, semi-retired or passed (Serino). I even had a fleeting thought of UNH alum Bruce Crowder, who briefly was seen as an up-and-coming young HEA head coach in the '90's ... but he's been out of the game for quite a while now, and shockingly he's 68 years old anyway. Heck, oft-touted 3 time captain Patrick Foley also got out of the game and is with the Boston PD, along with Brian Yandle. They're both in their 40's, jeez. Bogie is in his 50's. Of all the names on here, I'm still on the Bogie Train.

That’s fair, perhaps depending on what direction is taken (do we let MS7 go this year? Do we get an interim? Etc). I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy T at least gives him a phone call - if for nothing else maybe to get his opinion on potential candidates to look into.

Who knows, maybe if Lassonde decides to retire back home to the Rochester area, if he would would have any interest “staying in business” and he returns to UNH as a semi-volunteer goalie coach. Didn’t we use to have this position in the past? I could almost swear Ty Conklin used to help out in this regard…

If anything, maybe he can help attract elite goalies from the USN team to come to UNH. That would be appreciated!

Anyone know if this is the same Ryan Cordeiro as the former UNH and Merrimack player?

Pawtucket police acknowledged the “courageous citizens” who intervened in the attack and aided victims. Michael Black, Robert Rattenni, and Ryan Cordeiro subdued the shooter, police said, while former Warwick, R.I. firefighters and EMTs Chris Librizzi and Glenn Narodowy, along with Maryann Rattenni, a nurse, “rendered critical first aid.”

“Their actions undoubtedly prevented further injury and increased the chances of survival for the injured,” police said in the statement. “They exemplified model citizen behavior and true bravery in the face of danger.”

Given that he was from the NE area and this mess happened in a rink I'd wager it's probable this is the same guy. May have saved some lives.

edit - there is a 2001 birthdate with the same name from RI so maybe less likely now that I originally thought.

We currently have a goalie coach, Sean Maguire, played for BU.

Since we are throwing names out there, a friend of mine reminded me, Kevin Dean has a ton of coaching experience, currently an Assistant Coach in Vancouver. Liam Blackburn is Director of Scouting/Associate Coach in the BCHL. James Richmond is the GM/Head Coach in Brampton in the OHL. Richmond would seem to be a good fit, since we are probably going to have to rely on Major Junior players going forward. A few phone calls to make, if they are still interested in keeping an ex-Wildcat as the coach.

UNH goalie coaches:
2012/13-2017/18 — Mike Buckley
2018/19 — Brian Foster
2019/20-2022/23 — Ty Conklin
2023/24-2024-25 — ??
2025/26 — Sean Maguire

So, now let’s list the elite goalies that they recruited to UNH over the past decade. Maybe Ty Conklin recruited Jakob Hellsten? Any others?

Someone recruited Muszelik also...

"Sean Maguire is currently in his third season as the Director of Goaltending Development for UNH men's hockey in 2025-26."
Per Maguire's coach page, looks like he slotted in after Conklin.

And it's especially heartwarming to see the post from Whaler trying to correct your factual error with more incorrect information. If there was a slam dunk competition for stupidity, I suppose Whaler would win it.
Fluffer, reading comprehension is low on your list I see. My term - Just off the top of my head - refers to me not looking it up, going by memory, guess you could say old school. Was off by a year, not 20, ouch that really stings.

Now we can all get back to your thrilling commentary on why adding cup holders to the Whitt seats will finally put us back on the path to relevancy. And the wonderful info that MS7 has a contact in the molded plastic industry to make it happen. This will clearly show he is the coach we need and justify a 2 year extension.

You are pretty week this weak. :-) :-)

Found my email with the UNH ticket options for next year. It is either $4 or $2 per seat depending on location. But if you pay 6 months early you can avoid the increase. It says renewed by March 21st, so the question I will ask is and already know the answer is, what is considered renew? Paid or signed up for?

"As we look to the future, these adjustments will support ongoing investments in the areas that matter most to our student‑athletes: training environments, recovery resources, academic support, sports medicine, and the long‑term health of the program."

Left out coaching

Also found in my Junk folder, the ability to get presale to concerts at the Whit. Anyone want to go with me to Turnpike Troubadours with special guest Lucero? Should be nice and cool inside the Whit in June.

THis has to be an early April Fool's joke right?

Don't fret STH's who may not be fans of the Troubadours. Heard that MS7 is also using his connections to line up Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Whitt** to sweeten the renewal pie. So don't sell him short just yet!

** Not their holiday show, but orchestral covers of Bad Bunny. Also the 2nd week in August, may be a bit toasty. The thought that counts??

Freshman forward Félix Gagnon (Jonquière, Quebec) leads Hockey East and is second in the nation with a .626 faceoff winning percentage among players with over 100 faceoff attempts.

You need to sync up with Chuck Murray. Chuck is already coordinating a group ticket purchase and a pre-show meet up for drinks at Libby’s for the one of his all time favorite bands the Bronski Beat show.

It is his go to for Thursday night karaoke at Jade Palace out on Route 1A, and he is surprisingly close in his vocal ability to cover it.

I know how humble Chuck is and doesn’t like the spotlight. But he will oblige usually if you request an on-the-spot rendition. Trust me, it is something he prides himself on. He gets enjoyment showcasing his talents. You would be surprised how well Chuck can sing and you just need to say “hit me one time with that Smalltown Boy, Chuck”.
