UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

What happens when he gets it and still loses. What's the next thing UNH doesn't have?

Look it’s great if they get improved facilities. It cannot hurt. But improved facilities don't turn a guy who has never proven he can recruit into an ace salesman. If he could sell, he could do so to the current facility. THAT is why it's an excuse...

MS7 now will argue that he deserves another three-year contract through the 2026/27 season to prove that he can win with upgraded facilities.

It will be an attractive opportunity for a new coach to step in without any built in excuses.

... and that, my friends, is the danger here. And there will always be something "missing" facilities-wise, this being a state school competing against a bunch of well-heeled private institutions.

As UNH Hockey fans, we are basically being asked to swallow hard and accept another hopeless year of mediocrity.

At least half of the previous peak fanbase (probably more) has been decimated over the last 20 years, and the primary support system (FOH) has gone with it. Those of us remaining are the hardest of hard-core fans left. Speaking for myself, I don't know if even my nearing 50 year stretch of never switching allegiances with ANY of my teams, no matter how sh!t they became, will make it through this one IF MS7 were to be extended without merit. In 1976, I was SO troubled by the Bruins failing to sign Bobby Orr that I dropped them like the hottest of hot potatoes, even when they were still contending for Cups, and threw my lot in with the Dead Wings (deader than dead at the time). That's my last switch.

UNH has done SO much damage to Hockey, and the sad part is how much of it has been self-inflicted. How bad is it now? I'd rather UNH re-hire Dick Umile than extend Mike Souza ... and frankly I don't want to bother Coach Umile in his retirement. His ship has sailed. But at least his ship left the harbor and enjoyed many conquests over a lot of years. The mere idea that a guy who punched his ticket a decade ago would be a better option than the current guy in charge, that tells you everything you need to know about what a joke the program has become.

Like many before me, I can find better things to spend my time on. I'd hate to do it, but it would be self-preservation.

My guess is, the "banquet" this year turned out to be an all-you-can-eat affair at the Golden Corral down on South Willow St. in Manchester, so as to allow some of the outgoing players better connections to their next destinations out of Manchester/Boston Regional Airport. The event actually took place over the weekend, and is now being simulcast on tape delay via Coach Souza's Twitter account. No way is this 6+ hour extravaganza starting on a Monday afternoon at the outset of Finals Week. Clearly, something is very wrong (and very rotten) in Denmark ...
This is incorrect. Twitter is digital not analog (tape) and tweets were via the @UNHMHOCKEY account.

In addition to being < 4 miles from MHT, the Manch Golden Corral is 5 minutes walking distance to a U-Haul Moving & Storage location.

LOL.

With UNH's main campus not too far away, a great 2nd NH location for GC would be the latest development over the Southeast corner of the Lee Traffic Circle. Unless, of course, the far-superior Northwoods Brewing Company / Johnson's gastro complex over in Umile-Land decides to open a second location of their own at that same LTC site. Bar, bakery, restaurant and ice cream stand, all in one. If you haven't been, please go. You won't regret it.

...without any built in excuses.

I wonder. As I glanced at the images of Arkansas' new 27-million dollar baseball facility it occurred to me that UNH could heavily invest in facilities and still come up short relative to the Big Ten schools, the North Dakota's and any other school that also invests. It could be the gift that keeps on giving for Souza - get your new facilities and not have to stop complaining! Talk about having your cake and eating it too...

Amen Dan! MS7 is the salesperson who "just needs a little more time to land the big fish". What he never figured out is while going after the big fish, you better keep catching the small to medium ones as well. This is what you eat daily and pay your mortgage with. Keep building the base and then you take some more chances on the big one. Some salespeople get lucky sooner, but the process needs to be consistent and repeatable. Tell a consistent story, have some enthusiasm, talk big picture about what I can do for YOU!

Sadly, he has had 8+ years and the "book of business" he was handed keeps getting smaller and no new substantial customers. Buying a better suit or fancier car ain't gonna cut.

Feeling the pain of youse guys, but been there...you know. MS7 needs to lay out the plan to return relevance to the UNH program. Someone sometime needs to pin him down...whats the plan, who initiates each part of the plan, how is it measured and by whom . What are the goals..(should be pretty easy for all to agree on this) and whats the schedule for reaching them. If you dont specify what you want and put a completion schedule to each phase (my construction background talking) then there will be failure. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Passionate fan base at UNH....a shame so much energy is expended here with unsatisfactory results apparently. If not I graduated high school from NH I could give a chit, but, a good rivalry between UNH and ME is healthy these days especially with the parity in HE. Coaches nowadays seemingly have the coach speak down pat to skirt the truth when need be.

This would be the worst thing for anyone to do. Asking him to lay out a plan would mean you would then need to give him time to implement the plan, and then further time to see if there are any positive results. The ship has sailed. The ONLY PLAN the UNH AD and Admin should be asking MS7 about is his, or theirs, Exit Plan.

As I stated awhile back the recruiting from 2017-2020 was horrific lots of 3rd and 4th line players. The incoming recruits coming in the next few years are better quality. But your right Whalers the ship has sailed.

Agreed. MS7 knows how to make a plan. He just does not know how to execute a plan, which takes good recruiting and good coaching. Execution is the whole point of a plan. If MS7 knew how to execute a plan, we would not be spending all these pages and threads whining about MS7.

I've been hearing/reading this pretty steadily in the last few years, but somehow the on-ice product never improves.

Some players decommit, and sadly those players who do come to UNH don't show signs of development.

And if they eventually get to a point of value, they up stakes and find a better program.

It's a vicious cycle, and there's only one way to end that, my friends ...

And when some of our better players leave in the portal, we do not get much in return. The portal is not our friend. :-(
