UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

Interesting portal entry today - defenseman Ryan Siedem of Harvard has posted his name as a graduate transfer, who does not wish to be contacted by schools. That usually means (as was the case with Fessenden) that the player has already selected his preferred destination. UNH would be factor for Siedem's immediate consideration as he is the older brother of forward Jason Siedem who is expected to arrive at UNH this fall. If I recall correctly, both originally committed to BC expecting to eventually play together before following different and separate paths...

Ryan played three seasons at Harvard, plus a sophomore season in the USHL when the Ivy's did not compete due to COVID. He posted four goals and 37 points in 68 games over the past two seasons. Ivy players CANNOT use their graduate seasons in the Ivy league, which is why so many Ivy players enter the portal with their single season of eligibility remaining. He'd upgrade the UNH defense, undoubtedly, though that is certainly not the Wildcat's largest need...

It might be a bigger need now Dan if Carfagna bolts.

Well it seems he's going based on coaching, not NIL. I bet he's joining his USHL Coach Luke Strand at Ohio State. So better trusted Coach and better conference. OSU just lost two underclassmen to the NHL (Lohrei + McWhan), so track record of NHL development. And he'll be teammates with Dunlap.

Here's a tweet from Caragna about his former coach on twitter getting Ass coach job at OSU.Outstanding coach but a better friend,no words can describe what he's done for my career. That don't sound good for UNH if the rumors are true.

Carfagna leaving leaves us with 6 defensemen including the incoming Fitzgerald next season unless Kalle Eriksson returns for a super senior COVID extravaganza season. Mikey better be digging for some help and quick, especially if the bleeding has not stopped yet.

Just when you thought this rock bottom, time to get a shovel and keep digging.

Shovel? We don't need any stinking shovels! (Blazing Saddles reference) Dynamite seems more like it :-) or..a well designed tourniquet. How many so far?

Stevenson
Fessenden
Penney
Dunlap
Carfagna
Margel
DeVita

Am I missing anyone? Obviously other teams are going through this but...

Maybe Rich will put Souza in the portal? Send him out to Cazenovia maybe? Blue Skies Farm has some vacancies ...

She's already stumbling on finding a replacement for Herrion.....already two offers have reportedly been made and refused (salary too low, supposedly..... and not surprised). And there are a higher % of UNH bball players in the portal right now as opposed to hockey.

Re: player development. Let's be clear - It's not just Souza, but it's Stewie and Guilano too, who had major roles in recruiting these athletes and had major roles in developing these athletes too.

I expect either one to move on sometime in the next couple of months. Bank it.
I am trending back towards 50/50 on a coaching change after next season.

There are 240 players in the portal. It's okay. Relax. I hear there's some good hockey on ESPN2 today. Enjoy. Go BU!

That's about an average of 4 disgruntled/underutilized players per program. UNH has 6 - one captain, one starting goalie, two young studs, and two disgruntled/underutilized players. Nothing to see here, folks ...

If they don't make that move AND take the hiring process seriously by offering a good value to their chosen candidate it will solidify UNH hockey as an also-ran. The fans that are hanging on will continue to slide out, they won't reclaim the ones who left recently who are looking for a reason to come back. I seriously hope the powers that be realize how much hinges on next year's decision. If the difference in say $25,000 per year is what will get the right person vs the wrong person, make the right call. The fact that even as deep as the hole is now that several games get into the 4,000 attendance range says with better results the money would more than be made up.

As much as it looks badly I can understand them undercutting the basketball spot. There's not a lot of money coming in the door via basketball at UNH. If they try to undercut the hockey coach next year, it's just going to get worse...

Ooooh. Math! So, we have fewer "disgruntled/underutilized players" than average. :-)

The captain, starting goalie are fifth years. No biggie.

The starting goalie and a 7 GP Sophomore defenseman that I had to do a roster search on are now two time transfers.

"Studs"? Really? I'll give you Carfagna.

Don't mind Stevenson & Fessenden - this happens all the time. No team wants to defer and lose, say, the next Mike Vecchione for one more year of adequate. Money needs to be allocated wisely, and thus there are graduate transfers in the portal from every program.

Don't mind Margel & Penney - two depth players seeking more opportunity, with neither an impact player toward a potential renaissance of UNH Hockey.

Losing Carfagna and Dunlap is problematic and hard to forgive. These are young, featured players - the sort around which you want to build your re-build - leaving for greener pastures. These losses are both telling and impossible to ignore. Yet, hardly surprising.

A coaching transfer portal? Yes!!! This should most definitely be a thing. It will SO reverse my declining interest in college hockey and NCAA sports in general.

Agreed. Especially the bold and even more so with Dunlap being from NH.

Let's see who we bring in...

From the Highest Paid Coaches thread: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...Fe2gu5QyNPwfaXslABX/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true

I am not sure $25k will make a difference.

Oh, so that's what it looks like when a player loves a coach and wants to play for him.
