UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

At tis point to get back does UNH need to go through the system phase, get back to something respectable, so able to draw the talent to play more of an open style?

JB you have followed the program alot longer than me...and you know more about hockey than me...but didn't UNH play an "open style" of hockey when they were recruiting those "speedy forwards" who could race down that "big sheet of ice" and score seemingly "at will"?

Takes a special skill set to play that kind of free wheeling game and also seems easy to defend against when you don't have the "Haydar Horses" of the past!

I always say UNH is pretty easy to defend against...not too hard to figure out what they are up to...unless you have decent pkaymakers (which you could see Sardo was showing that talent).

Look for UNH D Damien Carfagna to hit the transfer portal #collegehockey

Heading a big name from UNH is heading west - potentially to the B1G https://abs-0.twimg.com/emoji/v2/svg/1f440.svghttps://abs-0.twimg.com/emoji/v2/svg/1f440.svg

Losing your best freshman D and second best freshman forward is not a great plan.

If this stuff about Carfagna turns out to be accurate (no reason to doubt it) AND Dan's post is on the mark, there may be a lot of low-scoring games coming up next season.

Do you think MS7 even HAS a plan? AD Rich - PLEASE pull the plug ASAP before further damage is inflicted ...

Chuck,

She's already stumbling on finding a replacement for Herrion.....already two offers have reportedly been made and refused (salary too low, supposedly..... and not surprised). And there are a higher % of UNH bball players in the portal right now as opposed to hockey.

We're just gonna have to ride this one out as best we can I'm afraid.

"Where would we play Willie McGee?" -- 1990, Red Sox GM Lou Gorman when asked why the Red Sox didn't complete a deal for outfielder Willie McGee

http://bostondirtdogs.boston.com/2011/04/a_baseball_man.html

“Lou Gorman, first and foremost, was a gentleman: kind, warm, decent, and positive. He treated everyone with dignity.” But, in 1990, he also traded Jeff Bagwell for Larry Andersen, in what would prove to be one of the worst trades in MLB history.

last one out the door please turn the lights out. Was all for some roster turn over but not some of your best freshman and only one way movement in the portal. Souza needs a miracle now to to save his job, at least I hope so

I read somewhere (here?) that something like 4 of last season’s top 5 scorers were in the portal. I assume they portaled after Coach Herrion was not renewed. Anyone know if that is true?

Firing the UNH basketball coach is a safer move than the hockey coach. Chuck pointed out several pages back that Coach Herrion’s most recent seasons were UNH’s best ever. Still, the program’s history means the new hire can be underwhelming and their performance weak and virtually no one will notice. An underwhelming hockey coach hire and you could heat your home with the flames from this thread and beyond. I wonder if AD Rich will have very real conversations with potential replacements and feel comfortable that a good hire is very likely before making a change. I am thinking there are <wink> tampering rules about such things.

Aw...come on...we/I am/aren't that bad...are we?
ha!

Was reading an article today on Sununu's budget and the house vote tomorrow cut funds from $8M to $2M for Whit renovations. I knew the weight room is in dire need of an overhaul but I was not expecting to find that they are looking at a $32M renovation.

Anyone know what they plan on spending $32M on?

Over on BigAl’s ‘Highest paid hockey coaches thread,’ Sigx15 posted a link to his spreadsheet from last year with MS7 at $240,000 for 24th highest of 34 listings (apparently data not available for most ECAC, AHA, and independent teams).

This $32 mil sum sounds strangely familiar, as there has been discussion in the NH Legislature about spending $32 mil of federal Covid funds on a new Tramway or gondola at Cannon Mountain. I am not in favor of either of these options, as the present Tramway can be overhauled as is for about $3 mil, which was the original plan to happen 40 years into its life, which began in 1980, delayed by the pandemic.

Funny you bring this player up as I just read about his brother (2023 UNH commit) and his playoff goals from a Twitter post reported by CHC. Interesting...maybe we get lucky here tho I echo your sentiment regarding our needs..

Would have to look. Not sure if Kalle E is returning for example for a 5th year. Since UNH doesn't or hasn't put out a "who's returning" tweet / article hard to say? But yeah...sounds like a decent player.

Kalle E = classic example of a player regressing in MS7’s reign, going from 18 to 12 to 6 points over the past three years, despite playing 10 fewer games as a sophomore. If one believes in trend lines, Kalle would score only 3 points were he to return as a grad student next season.

Well, she's the compliance expert, so she'll know the do's and don'ts, I would think. But so long as the potential candidate(s) she approaches are not under contract with another NCAA school at the time of the contact - except promotions - I'd think she'd be in the clear. Think just how often NCAA D-1 Football head coaches materialize in short order at the end of the football season, even when some are finishing up their NFL assistant commitments.

Two guys I'd have at the top of my "check out their interest level" list would be Jim Tortorella (assistant at Harvard) and Jeff Blashill (assistant at Tampa Bay), and I'm sure our intrepid posters could come up with more. Torts is probably a little old (approaching 60) but knows the joint and might like what amounts to a no-lose proposition at UNH - I mean, how much worse can it get? Torts knows the recruiting, knows the game, and his last name still has some currency. Blashill - who I raised as a possibility this time last year - is recharging his batteries under Coach Cooper, in what was basically a convenient "coach swap" with the Wings (FWIW Coach Lalonde looks like he will be bringing in DRW with their first winning season in awhile, as the Yzer-plan steadily advances). There seems to be some slippage with TBL this year, so Blashill presumably hasn't made any permanent lodging plans along Florida's Gulf Coast, and has to be looking for his last big (or long-term reliable) paycheck next time around. He was successful at every level except a daunting Motown rebuild, and is a respected teacher of the game, so he'd have a lot to offer for UNH (not sure about vice versa, although the no-lose proposition applies equally to him).

I understand Steve Saviano is knocking it out of the park in his business exploits. He's back near his childhood home these days, maybe someone connected with his alma mater should give him a ring about a volunteer assistant's job??

Re: player development. Let's be clear - It's not just Souza, but it's Stewie and Guilano too, who had major roles in recruiting these athletes and had major roles in developing these athletes too.

I expect either one to move on sometime in the next couple of months. Bank it.

No doubt they share in the blame, and no doubt either figures long-term in the program after MS7 leaves. Probably not what Stewart expected when he signed on under Umile a year before Souza's coronation. Of the three of them, I feel worst for him, probably figured he'd get a chance when Umile retired to ascend to the top job. He'd built a decent reputation under Dennehy with Merrimack, and now there's no way he'd even be considered for the job. Them's the breaks, I suppose, but I can channel a little Fredo undercurrent to his current situation ...

Minor correction, the amount was reduced by $2m, not reduced to $2m. So it looks like the state is putting up 6m instead of the original 8m that UNH was hoping for.

Welcome to the brave new world of college hockey free agency and Name, Image & Likeness

Well it seems he's going based on coaching, not NIL. I bet he's joining his USHL Coach Luke Strand at Ohio State. So better trusted Coach and better conference. OSU just lost two underclassmen to the NHL (Lohrei + McWhan), so track record of NHL development. And he'll be teammates with Dunlap.

THE Ohio State U has same number of players entered into THE portal as UNH, six, so far.
