UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Maine could have kept Guite, who was the lead recruiter, for continuity’s sake. Guite had been an Assistant Coach for a long while. He is a former star player that like Souza scored a big goal in the 99 national championship. Maine fans like Guite a lot. However, the AD chose Barr who didn’t have the connections to Maine. However, he had a history of success wherever he had gone. So it was bold hiring out of network and likely more disruptive short term in favor of long term potential. It was fairly disruptive as some recruits canceled, some players left, etc… But Maine looks good for doing it. Most games sold out this year. Locked down Barr until 2028. Alfond family just invested heavy into hockey arena upgrades and expansions. Wonder if Maine didn’t hire Barr and Maine hockey wasn’t on a promising track would the Alfond’s have donated as much? Not as likely. Nobody puts money down on a horse with a limp.

Well thanks for that info. I knew he (Barr) was most likely up against ? Guite...so that explains it.

Your last sentence speaks volumes where UNH is concerned...which speaks to our current situation.

We've been 'limping' too long...

Would you take advice from the same people who scream SHOOT THE PUCK at the top of their lungs? The donors certainly matter but not sure how much the average fans do.

For me personally I would only care about current performance and anticipated future performance. The past is the past and there is nothing you can do to change it.

Which is exactly why if any extension is granted to MS7 it should be of a short duration...to see where this season takes him. And it ain't over yet.

Bring on the Ospreys!!!

P.S. - anyone else notice that a day or two after I lamented the absence of GUHN'er, another "long-time old-time" poster from Yellowstone appears in our midst? Hmmm ...

Dunno, Chuck, you proposing a Fan Forum conspiracy here? Grouchy joined the Forum on 11-10-2018 (is that “long-time old-time”?), does not reveal a location, and last posted on 3-01-2023, so, yeah, maybe overdue for a post, although not as easy to be grouchy this season. Contrast with TwoStep93 who joined the Forum on 1-16-2022 (is that “long-time old-time?), reveals Jackson, Wyoming, as a location, and posted this week. Need a link to the Twilight Zone soundtrack here.

I don't think you're picking up on what I'm trying to lay down, Snives. The X Files theme may be more appropos ...

Also, let's not forget ... the current HEA landscape is devoid of long-time legends like Jack Parker, Jerry York, and Shawn Walsh (RIP). So it's not like any of these programs are entrenched at the top coaching-wise like they used to be. I mean, only Bazin, Leaman and Luce have been in situ with their programs longer than MS7, right?

As of tonight, Luce may still get his team to the Garden, but his team will not finish above MS7’s team in the HEA standings. And, ditto for Bazin and his Ospreys.

Two regular season games left. Here are my comments/questions Do we take 6th or 7th?

1. Friday is a tie, Saturday is a win.
2. The women's PP is just as bad as the men
3. And the worst thing I have ever said is I agree with REF, Souza will get 2 years.

Who is risking their lives to go to Lowell?

Me...and your number 3 is not the worst thing you've ever said haha. Yeah too bad about that womens game PP ask Providence about that last night. Still the lady 'Cats had a great season..

Reading a few projections UNH has to win in reg both games..UMass needs to lose both in regulation and NU has to spoil PC's bid to redeem themselves. If those things happen we could take 5th but dunno how / if thats possible.

Anyway let's go 'Cats...make it a go this weekend to go into the tourney with that momentum...

So its a Friday night AWAY game...what could possibly go wrong? UML has 2, 2 W's at home this season...will the 'Cats bring their A game? Or struggle from the get go,
never get going like they have been known to do on Friday night away games. (except for Yukon...that was an amazing game).

UML has nothing to lose, 'Cats need to show they are for real getting a W at the Tsongas which I assume, will be Sr. night for them.

HR's predicts:

Friday: UNH 1 UML 1 (UNH wins SO)
Sat: UNH 3 UML 1

Come on 'Cats! End the RS with a bang!

Yes, congrats to Coach Witt for FINALLY having a good season. Two games over .500! Just her second winning season in 10 years. If Souza is getting two years, I wonder what type of extension she can expect - with this being her SECOND year a couple games better than even!?

I don't think we can finish any higher than 6th. If we take 6 that gives us 36, tied with UMass and PC. We lose both tie breakers to them. Unless there is some weird 3 team tie rule I can't see us having a bye.

I saw a couple of them last night and talked for a few minutes. The 7 straight minutes of PP with 0 goals was a killer in that game.

I just hope that we get a rematch with Umaine in the quarterfinals. The blackbears are not the strong team they were to begin the year, I could see UNH having a great chance to beat them to advance to the semis.

Except, the games would be in Orono which has always been a house of horrors for UNH. Not sure I would "hope" for a rematch.

Whoever locks the 3 seed this is highly unlikely but say they lose in the first round of the Hockey East tournament, would that mean we would have to play one of the top 2 seeds in the quarterfinals? Want to avoid playing BC or BU as long as possible.

While that is true, Northeastern did just go up there and kick the crap out of them. We will see how zoomass does this weekend. But I feel more comfortable playing Maine out of Umass and Providence.

Who is risking their lives to go to Lowell?

1) I think that we will end up in 6th place for HEA regular season.
2) Lanny preferred to risk his life in Lowell rather than in Maine.

FWIIW, both Bentley and Army handily beat UMass-Bazin at Tsongas at the end of November. My UML friend who treated me to the Bentley game was disgusted with his team, for good reason, I think. If we lose any of the next three games against Bazin’s team, I will be disgusted with our team. No Ties! No losses!!
