UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Ability to fundraise has been one of the most important traits for college coaches at every level for several decades now. Putting butts in the seats has been important for revenue and revenue-adjacent sports for even longer.

I think that the team getting off to a good start this season helped put some butts back in the seats, which had dropped off dramatically the past few years with all the losing at the Whitt.

Now that your attendance figures are back up, please resume forking over those conference points… all of them.

Tenacious...this was the descriptor I gave UNH for their play at the exhibition game v Maine months ago. Playing like this allowed them to have the
early success they did (my opinion). This dropped off, they became tentative...as opposed to tenacious. Here's their goal for the weekend, copied from the UL:

“I want to get back to being a team that plays with a lot of pace and speed,” Souza said. “I don’t think you can play as fast if you mismanage the puck through the middle of the rink … When there’s a play to be made, make it. If there’s an odd-man rush, make it. But, if not, the puck’s gotta get in behind the opposing team’s defense.”

Also they are thinking they can still get back into the top 4 conversation (in HE) not sure how that is going to happen but anyway...Also MS7 met with his top scorers to
see where their heads were at with their productivity:

“If anything, I try to take some pressure off of them,” Souza said. “Certainly, we’d love to get Ryan and Cy going even more than they are — Morgan — all guys that have had productive years but the productivity has left them longing for some more productivity.”

Yeah, let's be productive.

No mention of Jensen returning and I haven't heard how he is doing since his injury at BC..anyone (Norbert) know?

Anyhoo...can't wait to see how all of this plays out this weekend...

The injury is not as bad as they originally thought. I don't have an update on this week, working on it.

Yeah, blasting news in the UL sports page about how you're trying to take the pressure off your top scorers, all while focusing on that point and naming names ... genius, I tellya. And here we thought, those struggling guys were gripping their sticks a little too tightly already ... you ain't seen nothin' yet!!

Hoping for a UNH sweep this week, but if they do lose Game One, I'm almost hoping for a UMaine sweep, just to remove all doubt and get this season over with, and get to work on shaping the next ten years of Wildcat Hockey.

I will not be surprised if some of these better players that MS7 seems to be inadvertently throwing under the bus decide to bolt via the portal at season’s end. Sad.

I was part way through typing a response to ’Ref’s post yesterday, but deleted it because it was negative in tone as several of my recent posts have been and I don’t like negativity. Hoping this:

does not translate to dump and chase. Yuck.

I am looking forward to a compelling watch tonight. Fingers crossed. If things go sideways in a hurry, TCM is airing Bullitt at 8:00 and there are a couple of NCHC games on as well. Go ’cats. Beat Maine.

Well I know my posts have been negative in nature (I know you didn't say they were)....Problem is...I have a big FOMO issue lol..and am sick of seeing UNH missing from the post season other than the first round.

If we hang on to get a home playoff game at least thats something more than we've had since what...2016?? Speaking of 'back then' I found a 2015 HE poster cleaning out a closet.

Had forgotten UVM was at the Garden as well. We lost a 4 -1 decision to BU but hey we scored the first goal..a TyK squeaker of a shot past Matt O'Connor. Funny how I remember that game but dont ask me what I had for breakfast yesterday?

LOVE Bullit! A great Steve McQueen oldie but goodie..Sounds like a plan!

Playing with an edge is fine but stay out of the box.

I was about to write that maybe our Cats should try goading the Black Bears into taking more penalties, but upon some research it appears that the team from Orono is reluctant to do so this season, as the Black Bears seem to be the reincarnation of the former UNH SMT’s. It looks like goal differential is one of larger disparities between the two teams.
